Peru is a beautiful and diverse country with a rich history and culture. It is also a popular tourist destination, with millions of people visiting each year to see Machu Picchu and other iconic sites. However, Peru is also a country with a high crime rate. Petty theft, muggings, and assaults are common, especially in major cities and tourist areas. Kidnapping is rare, but does occur. Despite the risks, Peru is generally a safe country to visit if you take precautions. Here are some tips for staying safe in Peru:
1. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
2. Avoid walking alone at night.
3. Do not carry large amounts of cash or valuables with you.
4. Be careful when withdrawing money from ATMs.
5. Avoid using public transportation at night.
6. Be careful when taking taxis. Only use taxis from licensed companies.
7. Do not drink alcohol to excess.
8. Be respectful of local customs and traditions.

If you are planning to visit Peru in 2023, it is a good idea to check the latest travel advisory from your government. The US Department of State has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Peru, which means that travelers should exercise increased caution due to crime and civil unrest.
Despite the risks, Peru is a rewarding country to visit. The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu are two of the most popular tourist destinations in Peru, and for good reason. The Sacred Valley is a beautiful region with ancient Inca ruins, charming villages, and stunning scenery. Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world.

If you are planning to visit the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, there are a few things you can do to minimize the risks:

1. Book your tour with a reputable company.
2. Make sure your tour includes travel insurance.
3. Be prepared for the altitude. Machu Picchu is located at an altitude of over 2,400 meters (7,800 feet). It is important to acclimatize to the altitude before hiking to Machu Picchu.
4. Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
5. Do not carry large amounts of cash or valuables with you.
6. Be careful when taking taxis. Only use taxis from licensed companies.
7. Be respectful of local customs and traditions.

If you are looking for a more challenging experience, you can hike the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The Short Inca Trail is a 2-day hike that takes you through the rainforest and past ancient Inca ruins. The hike is challenging, but it is also very rewarding. If you are planning to hike the Short Inca Trail, it is important to book your permit in advance. Permits can be purchased online or at the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park in Cusco. Peru is a beautiful and diverse country with something to offer everyone. With a little planning and caution, you can have a safe and enjoyable trip.
