Every single course u do in Higher Institution, u MUST pass them all b4 u can graduate, else d person wil stil return as a spillover student 2 write those failed courses! Dis is why Higher Institution is not Secondary Sch, where failed subjects can slide & d student wil stil be promoted without looking back! Any carryover in d 1st Semester must be written in d same 1st Semester of d next level! Same wit any carryover in 2nd Semester must be written in d 2nd Semester of d new or next level! Biochemistry is something else! I'm sure those courses are those ones filled with pathways and complex enzymatic stuff. Know what? Ask him what he truly wants. If he doesn't want the BCH anymore, let him write jamb and move to another department or take the bold step, go back to 100lvl and do something else. |

Sorry about your brother's predicaments. Your brother needs someone to guide him on reading methodology as it relates to biochemistry. Reading entails several aspect, however, the most important of all is knowledge internalization and accuracy of recall. He need to work on these. Their are strategies to achieve the above. He may try googling to know more. Wish him good luck. |

PaNnamdi: I don't think it is possible to drop mandatory courses. You need to boost your younger brother's moral and let him know that having 5 carryovers is not the end of the world. If others pass the courses , he too can pass the courses as well. He should get past examination question papers of the courses he carried over and for the courses he is studying and study them thoroughly to know questions in the past examinations questions papers that have the tendencies to be repeated so that he can prepare adequately to answer them if they are reapeated. If the questions are six to answer four questions for example, he should know the four questions that he can answer correctly study them and know how to answer them even if the questions are twisted. He should be puntual to all his lecture classes and take notes and attendance seriously . He should take his continuous assessment works like term papers and take home assigments seriously. By God's grace, he would excel 1 Like |

PaNnamdi: Bro did you ask your brother weather he can study that course? Not about dropping some mandatory courses but did he fit in for the course ? I guess he was forced or he might copy any of his friends doing the course. Maybe he can dropout and go for another course that is not widen as biochemistry 1 Like |

Hmmmm. Had issues In my first year at the uni.. Having Completed registration, had to defer, came back the same year, resuming for second semester, got an ID card. Second year I had to leave due to esoteric reasons( based on health condition). The best advice I can give, is that you should try and advice ur brother, give him confidence, and tell him that he should be serious with his studies.. |

PaNnamdi: Is it a crime if he spill's? Do you know why he had those 5 carryovers in biochemistry? You think the course you studied is the same with biochemistry? Come and draw the structural formula of b-glucose and levo rotatory glucose with other structures off heart before you start asking why he had carryovers. Hiss |

Biochemistry is hard and close to useless in Nigeria. If Uniben is like Unijos then forget it. With 5 carry overs your brother will spill. If you like him advise him to take another JAMB. There is 80%chances he will still have another carry over in his final year. That department no get joy o |
Re: My Younger Brother Is Having Serious Issues In The University by Josele01(m): 11:26pm On May 21, 2023 |
PaNnamdi: As someone who graduated from Uniben department of chemistry my advice to your kid bro is that he must talk to his course adviser. The standard in Uniben is that your carryover courses must be registered first before even your core and mandatory courses. It’s in the order of carryover > core courses > mandatory courses > electives. If he has enough credit space in his current session to accommodate his carryovers and other courses then he should go ahead and register them all. However, if there’s not enough credit space to do that he will eventually have to register them in the order I mentioned above. He may have one or two courses outstanding in that case. Those outstanding courses could fit into his 400level and 500level academic session provided he does not pick up anymore carryovers. He still has the potential to graduate without any spill over year if he can pick himself up and focus. Lastly, I’ll reiterate my earlier point. Let him seek the advice of his course adviser. |

PaNnamdi: He is free to drop subsequent level courses he like to drop to make room for the carry over courses. That's how it's done. He must first register all his carry over, before including the present level courses. But tell your brother it is not a crime to spill. People do spill wella but still graduate well. I have a friend that spilled like fire. Like 3 different time but still graduated with first class. How did he do it? He is a scholar. He always make sure he cleared all his carry over with good grades. So, your brother feeling depressed simply for 5 carry over, when he is still in third year, he is just worrying himself unnecessarily. |
Re: My Younger Brother Is Having Serious Issues In The University by Mcslize: 11:32pm On May 21, 2023 |
Barims: Any carry over you have, you can't write it that same semester. That's why it's called carry over. You will carry it over to the next session. You can't write first semester courses in second semester. For instance, that's why you see course code being arranged as CHE561 & CHE562. That 1 indicates first semester and that 2 indicates second semester. You cannot write that CHE561 in second semester of that same session. Just for an illustration. 1 Like 1 Share |
