I have just read the incredible survival story of four children who survived for forty days deep inside the Amazon forest when the plane they were flying in crashed, and killed their Mum and two pilots.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo plans to form a committee to explore whether citizens in the French capital should learn to live alongside rats in peaceful coexistence rather than attempt to exterminate the vermin, a city official said last week.

“With guidance from the mayor, we have decided to form a committee on the question of cohabitation,” Anne Souyris, Paris’ deputy mayor for public health, said at a meeting of the Council of Paris on Thursday.

The newly announced policy represents a significant departure from previous measures implemented in Paris to tackle the city’s estimated six million rats. The capital’s 2017 anti-rat plan funneled $1.8 million of its funds into a range of anti-rodent policies, such as the installation of airtight trash bins and the large-scale use of rat poison at thousands of sites across the city.

The rat problem is thought to have been exacerbated by recent pension-reform protests in Paris, which saw refuse go uncollected on city streets for weeks.

And with Paris’ rat population still outnumbering its human counterparts by a ratio of around 3:1, new measures are being considered – with Souyris saying the committee will establish “the most efficient” way for Parisians and rats to coexist that are “not unbearable” for people who live in the city.

Critics, though, say the plan amounts to simply throwing in the towel on the rodent issue. “Anne Hidalgo’s team never disappoints,” tweeted politician Geoffroy Boulard, who has frequently highlighted the city’s “proliferation of rats.” He added that “Paris deserves better.”

Some animal rights groups are more welcoming of new plans. Previous control methods were “ineffective and cruel,” Paris Animal Zoopolis said. “New methods [are] essential.”

Paris has long had a tempestuous relationship with vermin. Rats were largely responsible for the spread of the bubonic plague, which killed half of the city’s population in the 14th century. However, the animals also helped citizens stave off starvation during the 1870-71 Siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian war.

Paris is not alone in attempting to devise new methods of addressing age-old problems like rat infestations. New York appointed its first so-called ‘rat czar’ in April to deal with its own rodent problems, while the French city of Toulouse has employed the use of ferrets to help bring the rat population under control.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has named the Big Apple’s first ever “rat czar.” The mayor has long promised to bring down the city’s booming rat population, but their numbers have swelled under his tenure.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Adams named Kathleen Corradi as the city’s new ‘Director of Rodent Mitigation’, or “rat czar.” According to a press release from the mayor’s office, Corradi will serve as the public face of Adams’ rodent reduction efforts, and will liaise between New York’s existing rat experts in the departments of Sanitation, Health, and Parks and Recreation.

Calling Corradi a “maestro,” Adams claimed that his new ratcatcher-general will implement “new technologies to detect and exterminate rat populations” and try “innovative ways to cut off rats’ food sources.”

New York’s rat population has soared under Adams’ tenure, with sightings doubling between 2021 and 2022. While Adams’ office has blamed the increase on the fact that more inspections took place last year than the year before, his opponents say that cutbacks to garbage collection during the coronavirus pandemic triggered the population boom.

Adams has since limited the amount of time trash cans can sit on the sidewalk without being picked up, and on Wednesday announced the creation of a ‘Harlem Rat Exclusion Zone’ in which buildings will be rat-proofed and more traps laid down.

Despite the fanfare, Corradi won’t actually be wading into rodent dens or leading hungry terriers into infested basements. The new czar has a background in teaching, rather than pest control, and previously served as a planning director for the city’s department of education in the borough of Queens. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, she said that she favored “humane” methods of rat control and would bring “a science- and systems-based approach to fight rats.”

New York City is home to an estimated two million rats, according to a 2014 study. Previous administrations have attempted to solve the problem with limited success, and Corradi’s title is a nod to the “rat czar” nickname given to Deputy Mayor Joseph Lhota, who was appointed by Rudy Giuliani to “eradicate rats” in 2000.

For all of Adams’ talk, he hasn’t been able to fix a rat infestation in his own backyard. After the mayor was fined at least four times by the city for failing to control the creatures in his Brooklyn apartment, his political rival Curtis Sliwa publicly offered to lend Adams one of his cats earlier this year.

“He’s tried everything,” Sliwa said. “But it’s time that we revert to the best measure that’s ever worked. And that’s cats.”

By the time the conflict in Ukraine is resolved, Kiev will respect the loss of its former territories, and Western-led globalization will be dead, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told RT Arabic on Friday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Lavrov described the West’s proxy war with Russia as “a geopolitical conflict,” in which the US was attempting to eliminate a powerful competitor and “preserve its hegemonic position by all means.”

Before sending its military into Ukraine, Moscow offered more generous terms, and Lavrov warned on Friday that “the longer they put off talks, the more difficult it will be for them to reach an agreement with us.”

“We fully understand that we can only rely on ourselves and build relations only with countries open to an equal and mutually beneficial partnership,” Lavrov continued. “This is not what we see in the West these days.”

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky brushed off the African Union peace initiative on Friday, insisting there can be no negotiations with Russia. The high-ranking delegation, led by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, visited Kiev and is headed to Moscow next.

“I have said clearly and many times during our meeting today that allowing any talks with Russia while the occupiers are still on our land means freezing the conflict, the pain and the suffering,” Zelensky said at the press conference afterward.

According to Zelensky, Russia “deceived” the world for years with the Minsk process and is trying to do so again. For peace to happen, he argued, “Russian troops need to leave our entire independent territory.”
