For him to be accepted, he should distance himself from Bayo Onanuga, FFK and others who have proved to be ethnic evanchists. Their revisionist understanding of issues is heating up the polity. I will support him if does the right things and avoid ethnic bigotry and revisionism. 2 Likes 1 Share |

Toks2008: Here is your comment, but in another way 'The American government is so corrupt and inept so much that we cannot curb people smuggling, drug smuggling into the US, and weapons smuggling out of the US, and are also unable to stop corrupt border officials, drug cartels, and American drug dealers...etc' The problem is, so long as fuel is subsidised ...ie sold below its production and transport cost....there will be smuggling. Venezuela and Iran heavily subsidise fuel...AND the same fuel they subsidise is smuggled to their neighbours. Iran loses a lot to Pakistan and Venezuela loses a lot to its neighbours. Note that their fuel is even far cheaper than ours. And the reason why they cannot stop smuggling is simple....it is not just the big men that do the smuggling...hundreds of thousands of small people do the same thing. It is not the big tanker that crosses the border...small tankers do the same thing. And earn lots of money to pay off customs. And at the end of the day, cheap Nigerian fuel saturates the whole of West Africa. The only way we can stop this is to build a virutal Berlin wall around our country, man the wall with heavily armed soldiers, chase away people from our border area by declaring the area an exclusion zone, and shoot on sight anyone carrying jerrycans. You get the picture. Back to America. Things like drug legalization, gun control, etc have been suggested. Even maybe helping countries not to send their best overseas, or even making it easier for workers to immigrate to the us...has been suggested. And everytime, people say no. Besides the real reason why subsidy is going is not the smuggling. Our consumption of fuel is rising....even when you remove the amount lost to smuggling and lying and stealing. The cost of producing a liter of fuel is also rising year in and year out. And that means...we have to spend an increasing amount of money paying for more and more subsidies To the point that we are now borrowing. Am sure you say the poor are suffering now....well it is either they sffer now, or suffer 5 years down the line, when we are out of money, salaries are not paid at all, and the naira is exchanging at 10000 to a dollar...because we have run out of money and the IMF and China don't want to give us again. And before you start....Lord knows I wish we could keep fuel cheap, Lord knows I don't like the corrupt politicians too, Lord knows I am angry with our leadership, and Lord knows I never voted for APC or PDP in my life. And Lord knows, Tinubu is not the best we could do. But right now, and this is not propaganda....we are no longer the masters of our destiny. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Martinsmine: Venezuela and Iran that heavily subsidse fuel (Iran even subsidises fuel to the point that it spends twice its income from oil on subsides)...both have petrol smuggling problems. Same thing for Libya to the point that the government there is using air strikes against smugglers.( here is a report from over a week ago) The fact is, no nation with heavily subsidized fuel can curb smuggling. People love to make money, and if it means smuggling...they will do it.Eespecially in eg Venezuela...where fuel costs less than N10 equivalent...people carry it into Colombia...where fuel costs N600 equivalent. The NNPC boss even said it...that transporting a tanker of fuel within Nigeria...you don't make a profit up to a million. Take that same tanker across the border, and you make profits up to N30million. Heck, one can pay off the customs men on both sides, pay them bonus on top, and cruise home with enough cash. Plus, subsidy makes domestic refining unattractive. If I refine crude, and at the end, government sets the price of the end product below what it cost me to refine it...just to sell cheap fuel to the masses, I lose money, and by extension cannot maintain and upgrade my refinery when needed...and that's not ending well. At some point the nonsense had to end. 3 Likes |
