GEJ should have just ignored the protesters then, and removed subsidy. He had, after all the facts on ground as to how subsidy was damaging the economy. But he listened, and we ended up spending trillions more.

Then again, many Nigerian leaders, including strongmen like Abacha , were afraid to remove subsidy.

That Tinubu is removing subsidy is because we have reached a point of no return. We don't have the cash again. At least under GEJ we had some cash (even then, there were problems which is why GEJ wanted to remove subsidy). Now, we are borrowing for everything...including subsidy.

At some point our creditors are going to tell us to get the f** out if we come begging for more money.

Even if Obi takes over, Obi would do the same thing. Obi is not very fond of subsidy. Atiku too the same thing. And even if they wanted to keep subsidy....dem go borrow money again? On top of the money we never finish paying?.

The answer to your number one question, check my early reply.
Secondly, drugs and illegal immigration is not so much concealable items. That is why they sometimes build tunnels for easy passage.
Thirdly, this is the first time you will have total subsidy removal in a while. What you have before now is price increase to lower the subsidy amount that Govt has to cover. This time around, it is total removal of the subsidy. If landing or refining cost of a liter of petrol is N1,000 ( also exchange rate will play a role here), then N1,000 is what Nigerians or any other person will pay. And if the international oil price goes down, price of fuel will go down and Nigerians may be paying only N350. Market force will determine the price and there will be no government intervention in terms of subsidy payment. I try to explain and I hope you get it.

1. the highlighted are the key words there. in nigerias case, is the fuel coming from neighbouring countries or the other way around?

You have two options. Where in your previous response did you choose one of the options?

2. the items you mentioned coming from mexico are concealable items. how is so much fuel that sustains entire countries concealed?

3. Since you say Tinubu has done "total subsidy removal", can u pls answer these:

the government has been removing fuel subsidy since the 90s maybe earlier. what was the percentage of the cost of each litre of fuel was the government paying as subsidy?

with each partial withdrawal of subsidy, what percentage of subsidy was removed and what was left?

In this attempt by tinubu, what was the percentage of subsidy left that he removed?

4. According to you...Market force will determine the price and there will be no government intervention in terms of subsidy payment".

Was it "market forces" that increased the price of petrol from 180 to more than 500 naira?

As much as people like to say Tinubu 'decieved' Nigerians...the fact is, even if Tinubu came out to say that subsidy was bad in 2012, he would have been called GEJ's lackey back then.

Subsidy removal has always been opposed by Nigerians. Always. In 2006, one of Obasanjo's ministers tried to say that subsidy was bad by saying that a bottle of coke should not cost the same as fuel. He was mocked by Nigerians in the media and on the street for days.

Likewise, in 1993, IBB tried to remove subsidy, and he was labelled...an IMF lackey. Subsidy stayed.

Plus, if Tinub was in power in 2012, and GEJ was in oppositon, GEJ and co would have joined in the protests (That's why you guys should NEVER trust politicans). Politicans will do anything to get into power...including supporting or joining in protests.

But at the end, Nigerians protested because fuel jumped from N65 to N140. And they used the same arguments then as are being used now.

And yeah, GEJ should have just told them to go to hell, and removed the thing then. Yes, he would have lost 2015 elections by a wide margin...but Nigerians would have thanked him later.

Most times we tend to shoot ourselves on the legs withour own guns. Tinubu should try and cub the smuggling of crude and petrol in the country.

If our refineries work all that will end, we will be the ones benefitting by exporting refined products to our neighbors. So let tinubu do the needful.

Our refineries are still much ok but corruption shut it down.

How did Jonathan make nigeria bleed for 9years? Can you pls explain?

If IBB, abacha and obj didn't remove subsidy as u claim, what was responsible for the price increase of petrol products in their regimes?

If you saying subsidy is going because the govt is borrowing to sustain it, is subsidy the singular reason why buhari was borrowing money ceaselessly?

Is subsidy responsible for the N1.48 trillion on maintaining refineries between 2015 and 2020?

There's even a report that the money buhari spent on "repairing" the refineries is more than what Dangote spent building his refinery. Is subsidy responsible for the govt spending with no results?

In the first quarter of 2022, nigeria lost $1b to crude oil theft. Am sure fuel subsidy is responsible for that too.

It seems that fuel subsidy is responsible for all Nigerias problems. Is fuel subsidy a human being? Pls were does it live and were does it work? Does it manage itse5? Does it have NIN, bank account or phone number?

Your question is similar to asking how Nigerians get to European countries without passport not to mention Visa. We make it seem as if it is one easy task to ensure borders are not porous. We make it seem as if Nigeria is the only country with border issues.

To answer your question, even if the border is 100% percent tight, these marketers will find a way of getting more subsidies from the government. It's not okay acting as if it's one easy task having everything working. Even in the developed countries, there are still corrupt practices.

The only way to solve this fuel price issue is the removal of subsidy. No one will bring in fuel that can't be accounted for again when the citizens will be the one paying for whatever they buy. It is so simple.
