The second part of this doesn't make sense.

If I don't believe in the existence of a deity, then my actions are not based on what the unknown hypothetical deity approves or forbids. That doesn't mean I go out and specifically do what said supposed deity forbids.

It means the opinions (positive or negative) of an entity whose existence is unknown to me, has no bearing on the thought process that guides my actions.

I have always found this definition of atheist not believing in deities, to be absurd and ridiculous, however one wants to connote believe to mean "TRUST" or "FEAR", as it completely misses the fact that as far as anything is concerned, atheists do not believe, period. That said, culture, so I forgive, for despite many claiming to be atheists, one can't fail to notice religious residue in many. Worse for the Christian though, who merely believes God exists but does not know whether God exists or not, probably because their believing got in the way of their asking and seeking and knocking with all their hearts and souls and minds and beings until they find understanding.

I am an atheist. I do not believe that gods do not exist because I know that gods do not exist. I also know that all gods are and always have been stories we read of in books, and that some choose to believe those stories to be real, like believing Tom and Jerry really exist[ed] somewhere.

What does exist is the books we read to learn about the gods we are given. And thankfully, its a big book, a complex book, a book where every single word could mean lots of things and sentences even moreso, and so prone to be debated and discussed and debated so growth may occur. And not only do we Nigerians have one single book but two! Both in foreign languages.

We are indeed at the believing stage, and have only in my lifetime progressed into the reading stage. And here we have the writing stage developing, along with the use of the mind stage which it promotes. We will someday leave behind our childish beliefs and progress to the knowing stage someday, for only those who know can say 'let there be light' so light is, in Jesus Mighty Name Amen.
