Understanding The Japa Syndrome And What It Portends For Nigeria by Dogalmighty17: 9:40pm On Jun 21, 2023 |
THERE has been a rather marked loosening of immigration controls by most Western governments in the last decade. A great number of our intellectuals, skilled peoples and professionals in Nigeria have moved out or are planning to do so for a promise of a better life. That's fair. As much as it appears as if the West has opened its doors, the underlying truth is shocking. Anyone who has undergone a rudimentary economics class will of course have fair knowledge of what is called a tax base. You need a vibrant working population that can be taxed to run an economy. Most Western economies however, are running into a demographic time bomb. They are facing an aging population and a lesser number of young people in the workforce. The greater number of the aged puts pressure on the social welfare blanket. With fewer young people paying into these social welfare programs, with fewer young people carrying out economic activities, the social safety net gets depleted faster. When an economy grows to a certain size, it needs a certain population figure that must be sustained otherwise everything crumbles. The death rate in the West is greater than its birth rate. Japan is already panicking. China recently reversed its 1 child policy. The damage however may appear to have been done. They won't wait for their population to grow because it is impossible at this point. It is faster to import immigrants. Furthermore, an aging Western population needs healthcare professionals. They do not have enough young people going into these fields. Even worse, the performance of young people in STEM courses across the West, has been dropping. Recent US test scores is an example. So what does the West do? They resort to 'siphoning' professionals all across Africa and Nigeria is a major focal point. The West is drawing the best out of Nigeria. Indeed they are hollowing us out. It is slavery 2.0. It will get worse. The West will keep incentivising our best to come over and Nigeria will keep suffering as a result. In effect, Nigeria has no hope of advancement. Not when the West is ready to absorb the best we produce. It is not their fault however. Our government and their incompetence are the cause. 78 Likes 7 Shares |

Dogalmighty17: Good analysis, though skewed. China ended one child policy in 2015, not recently. So how come countries like China, Russia, Japan, don't want Nigerians moving there ? 21 Likes 2 Shares |

A time may come in Nigeria when people from neighbouring countries will fill certain labour gaps both in technical skilled labour and vocational.skilled labour Most youths are not learning artisan skills and most foreigners are filling the gap Most highly important high talent people in healthcare and I.T are leaving the country and taking their skills and knowledge with them . Engineers too. Getting good properly trained Plumbers, or carpenter or builders is a nightmare. Most are not well trained and so their apprentices learn from Oga the art of playing different clients and leaving half Done jobs and doing not so quality jobs A country can't do without without good health, good roads, phone network and bank network and electricity to power everything, and gas and fuel to move about and cook food. 33 Likes |

Yet the same educational deprived areas refuse to go to school, while landing the best jobs. Then we expect the bright minds to waste their minds ❓️❓️ God forbid. Let them japa 68 Likes |

Japa will only be a crime when the sons and daughters of our politicians, including our politicians stay put in Nigeria for studies, health and tourism. Until that is achieved, nobody should deny other the chance to move out of this British business centre 38 Likes 3 Shares |

PoliteActivist: 1.Some of these countries are not very immigrant friendly. Japan in particular is pretty pretty anti-immigration. Russia as well. China too. 2.LANGUAGE: If you had a choice between China, Russia and Japan...where you have to learn the language, before you get a job OR US, UK and Australia...where you already speak English, which one would you choose? 3.Distance. : China and Japan for example. 6 Likes 1 Share |

@OP: Hope you're not from a certain tribe that blame everyone but themselves?? Because it was quick for you to blame the Westerners as if they are ones begging/coercing your people to travel over the seas.. Again, why blame those leaving instead of blaming the government, who has made life almost unbearable for the majority?? Hardly before you see a Nigerian in Nigeria, who doesn't think of how to make money to meet up with the hyperinflated demands of now.. Travel out if you could without holding back... 5 Likes |

I am not overtly concerned about those who are not really skilled migrating (sorry to say they would not be mostly missed). My concern is regarding Skilled professionals who possess specialized knowledge and expertise that are crucial for various sectors, such as healthcare, engineering, and technology. When they leave the country, their absence creates a significant void in these fields, leading to a scarcity of highly skilled workers. Consequently, Nigeria may struggle to address complex challenges and innovate within key sectors, stifling its overall development potential. Addressing the negative impact of emigration requires a multi-faceted approach which I am not sure the government is equiped to implement or have the political will to confront. 3 Likes |

most people japaing are going there for education that's it. and after education they will rather stay likely few years while some will stay back n proceed to do PhD program others will want to work make that money n invest right here in Nigeria. the West have done so much, design their country to function. what has the government here done? they removed fuel subsidy on fuel, introduced tax on diesel, remove subsidy on dollars/fx and turn around to quickly double their salary over 120%. We where expecting them to come up with ideas, form a committee and identify areas, framework on how to channel these money into education, health, and infrastructure across the country so as to create a multiplier effect on the economy. a framework has to be put in place, an anti corruption framework has to be implemented to address state governments looting without doing anything while in power. until then those who travelled under any means will hardly return 3 Likes |

Dogalmighty17: I completely agree with you but no one should panic. Whether we like it or not, the world is now a global market place and the only limiters are demand and skill sets. No one can stop that. Indians are now trooping enmasse to Australia and that country, New Zealand, Dubai are seeing increased immigration by UK professionals. A lot of British people are also moving to France. What your excellent piece does ignore is the large number of "nomads" People who have licence to work from anywhere including Nigeria. This is the group with sustainable growth. Many Nigerians in this category work in two places - many prefer to spend 50-40% of their time in Nigeria due to personal reasons. When you read NL and hear people baying about leaving the country. These are either people whose qualifications and experiences are not global and they are re- training furiously or they are under qualified people. Private enterprises will ramp up the last category ( if they are humble enough). These are guys and dolls that can't write a simple straightforward sentence and who have poor communication skills with BIG ambitions. God will help them. Nigeria diaspora remittances will be useful for financing this last group and once diaspora find they can put in and exit funds easily they will start importing investments. Leave the high skilled japa people where they are. Nigeria needs them there. They are doing national service. 4 Likes |

Blame feminism for their low birth rates. Women in the western world no longer want kids and they prefer cats, dogs and other pets while having casual sex. Unfortunately i see Nigerians in Nigeria copying western values and lifestyle, who knows if we will alao have low birth rates one day . Me i don benefit sha. I don collect their passport and dey enjoy chilling job 🤣. Some of those that have japa will come back to Nigeria to work or invest too. So its not all doom and gloom 8 Likes |
