His military is weakened and messed up, it will take him years to rebuild a military that can fight/win a 21st century war and Russia as we know it today doesn't have the financial capability. Plus if he wins the war, he doesn't have the finance to control an external/big country like Ukraine. He can't withstand the guerilla warfare that will ensue. He bit more than he can chew!
