Members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) inspect a street of the Jiddari Polo neighbourhood of the northeastern Nigeria city of Maiduguri, on Februray 16, 2019 where Boko Haram fighters shot residents while two suicide bombers blew themselves up, killing eight people. – The attack came hours before Nigeria’s electoral commission announced it was postponing today’s presidential and legislative vote for a week. The killings came after the group overran a military base north of Maiduguri few days before, stealing an armoured vehicle and torching buildings in an attack that left “several soldiers” missing.

The UN’s top humanitarian official in Nigeria, Mr Matthias Schmale, has said that severe hunger is affecting 4.3 million people in Nigeria’s Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

Schmale told journalists in Geneva on Wednesday that the number of children under five at risk of life-threatening severe acute malnutrition had doubled in one year to reach 700,000.

Describing the situation in northeast Nigeria, Schmale said: “I have been to Borno and the other two states several times.

“I’ve seen mothers fighting for lives of their malnourished children in nutrition stabilisation centres.

Those of us who are parents must imagine what it’s like when you cannot ensure your children have enough to eat
,” he said.

According to him, the “catastrophic” situation is primarily the result of more than a decade of insecurity linked to non-State armed groups, which prevents people from farming and earning income from the land.

Another harmful factor is climate change and extreme weather impacts.

Last year saw the worst floods in 10 years in Nigeria, which affected more than 4.4 million people across the country, not just the north-east.

Soaring prices of food, fuel and fertilisers have exacerbated the crisis, and the response remains severely underfunded.

The UN official said that out of the $1.3 billion in humanitarian funding needed for the region, only 25 per cent has been secured so far.

Hunger is nationwide now.
They should stop this deceitful act of always claiming lack in all area to have all realized in this country.
They nearly crucify shettima for suggesting that Senate president should be given to a Christian which causes uproar in the north.
Even after building the most beutiful schools in boronue by the last governor, UN is still reporting that students seats on the floor in boronue state.
This act smells "British British "

With this news now, people will think there are no poor people in the South. The Northerners are just using these tactics to corner aid and donations to their region. Don't be deceived. It's only in the North that you will see various NGOs operating and employing hundreds of Northerners. Till a Hausa man buys the whole street, they will still be begging for alms while we Southerners think they are poor. You will see a Hausa Fulani man having more than 10 cows worth over 10m naira and we will still be looking at him that he's poor.
Northerners are not as poor as we Southerners think. There is poverty everywhere in Nigeria.

Until insecurities are tackled, hunger will keep rising from that flank.

Giving the mass of land called NE, Nigeria should be worried.
