Global Xchange aims to support the development of active global citizens, committed to working for positive change.

Global Xchange is an exchange programme that brings young people from the UK and from other countries to live alongside each other and work together as volunteers so they can share their learning with their host communities. Developed out of a highly successful VSO exchange programme called ‘World Youth’, Global Xchange seeks to support the advancement of a global perspective among young people. The programme is a partnership between, British Council, Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) and Youth for Christ (YfC) Akure, Ondo State.

Global Xchange works with teams of up to 18 young people (aged 18-25), with equal numbers coming from the UK and from Nigeria. The participants (volunteers) are recruited, and the teams are formed, to reflect diversity in terms of geography, ethnicity, ability, education and gender. Together, in cross-cultural counterpart pairs, they live with host families and work in host communities, for up to 3 months in the UK and 3 months in Nigeria. They also work on a global citizenship project specifically aimed at raising awareness of development and diversity within their host communities

We are inviting applications from individuals interested in participating in the Global Xchange project due to commence in September 2008. Interested applicants must have the following:

* A positive and realistic commitment to the programme
* A genuine commitment to learning
* Ability to solve problems
* Flexibility and adaptability
* Self confidence
* Ability to work with others in a team
* Sensitivity to the needs of others

In addition they must be able to:

· Treat everyone equally and with respect, regardless of any difference

· Abide by and respect all the laws, both of the UK and Nigeria

· Abide by all the rules and regulations established by the Programme to protect their

health and safety

· Always stay within host communities unless they have prior agreement from their

Programme Supervisor

· Respect the customs and cultures of host communities and specifically their host

families

· Take part in all the activities and phases of the Programme, including pre-departure

preparation and returned volunteers events

· Fundraise some money as part of their contribution and commitment to the program

Participants (volunteers) must be sure that they can cope with the above standards of behavior before they apply for the program.

Youth-led development (YLD) gives young people a role
in the struggle to make poverty history. The 2008 World
Youth Congress (WYC) will assess progress with YLD
since delegates coined the phrase at the first WYC in
1999. In reviewing YLD projects worldwide, delegates will
try to answer the question: “What is the most effective
role that youth can play in development?”

The 4th World Youth Congress will welcome 600 young activists from around 120 countries who are committed to rise to the generational
challenge of sustainable development. A majority will exhibit their Youth-Led Development (YLD) projects. Others will report on them – writing a book celebrating YLD achievements. All will take part in
discussions with development professionals and in a global
festival to celebrate International Youth Day, August 12th.

Invitation to the Summer University 2008
BE THE CHANGE

To young peace activists, media specialists, inventors, artists and lovers of life! To all those who are realistic and try the impossible!

Imagine the world would be close to apocalypse, that we would be standing in front of the collapse of the global supply system,
- and imagine that there would be ten days in the universe to provide meaningful answers for a future without war. There would be ten days, an appropriate place as well as specialists and activists with experience in all decisive key areas.

What would we do?
Would we still hesitate?
Wouldn't we be ready to be the change we wish to see in the world?

Actually, the world is close to apocalypse! We have these days, we have this place and we have a team of young, determined realists from the future workshop Tamera. We want to bring the vast experience of peace workers and specialists together with our power of awakening and the absolute Yes! for life.

That's what it is about:

Concrete education perspectives for peace knowledge in the social-human, ecological and technological area
Preparation and networking for a worldmodel for a future without war
Political theory of realization: Why can 50 people change the world
Perspectives for a lasting fulfilment in love

What is your role in the masterpiece of the future?
In which field are you the specialist for a change?
In which field do you want to educate yourself?

The Summer University is a common think-tank for different world.

Volunteers For Peace, (1034 Tiffany Rd., Belmont, VT 05730; 802-259-2759, vfp@vfp.org, www.vfp.org)

Volunteer workcamp organizations are only one way to find work on a European farm. Willing Workers on Organic Farms or WWOOF. (WWOOF International, www.wwoof.org/contact.asp, www.wwoof.org); connects people directly to farms interested in having travelers stay and work for varying lengths of time. After paying a membership fee of $10-$20, you receive a book listing all farms that accept volunteers and you can contact the individual farmers directly to arrange start and end dates. As with organized camps, you receive room and board in exchange for your work. Like the work camp organizations, the farms are not just looking for cheap labor. Your presence and the culture you represent are just as important as the work you provide. WWOOF works only with farms devoted to organic production as well as to cultural exchange.

Whether you choose satisfying manual work on a farm or more varied work at one or more international work camps, you'll find that either is an inexpensive way to have an active, rich overseas travel experience. For a current list of other short- term voluntary service opportunities throughout the world visit the volunteer listings section of www.TransitionsAbroad.com.
