Ominous. Lousy and feign quality assurance....

The university community can no more be trusted to operate effectively and efficiently, NUC appears to be saying since 1976. Since then it has started to become obstructive and shortly thereafter both an operator and a regulator to date. What an anti-trust practice? What an antithetical thing NUC does often.

Pro-establishment Okebukola was always there since 1999 to promote distrust in the university system and the intellectual community at large; to the chagrin of all. We can all see the undercover and clever contrivances of Obasanjo's mafia dominated and controlled Nigeria's space in NUC and other institutions of state. Well, university dons as tools and agents of state as reflecting in the declines it has brought the universities, learning and knowledge bases.

Recall that our universities minimum standard used to be the GCE 'ALs'/ HSC equivalent to the preliminary - 001 Level, of the past. Now it has fallen far below such as to draw the uninspiring, unacademically sanitised Northern savages equal to the far superior ones in other places.

Minimum Benchmark(BEME) of the old and today's CCMAS are nothing more than attempts at centralising the university system. Prof. J.F. Ade Ajayi did warn us all in 1988/89; but we are not learning.... Since 1976/77 NUC has degenerated from being a buffering institution that its 1st Executive Chairman, Chief Simeon Adebo made it and supposedly ran it to be; not just one into becoming a way to centralise Nigeria's university system and a terror to good works and obstruction.

CAN WE PLAY SAFE AND DO ENGAGE IN SOUND Univetsirty traditions, practices, tasks, responsibilities and management of Education? But never falling prostrate as NUC has always been making others to do.... And thus teach others by exception tactically and wisely enough. As far possible, NUC has been destroying Nigeria's universities....

Re: ASUU Rejects Curriculum Designed By NUC by eldeens: 7:31pm On Jun 30, 2023
If ASUU wants Universities to develop their own curriculum, then they have to amend the law that empowers NUC to lay down minimum academic standards for Nigerian Universities.

And this Curriculum is being developed by drawing professors from different universities and also Universities were asked to send in their inputs for the 70% and the remaining 30% is meant for the universities, in a nutshell the whole curriculum is bieng developed by Universities, NUC was just supervising the process

In the interim, what ASUU were saying is total rubbish.

I remembered my 100 level lecturer that could not solve basic algebra without copying answers from somewhere. He literally refused to entertain questions. He often mixed Hausa and English (like 70/30) even though we had a multi linguine class. ASUU has one of the lowest quality of lecturers with zero experience on what they were delivering to students. Probably, ASUU should be much more worried about the quality of teachers they were onbaording to lecturer before raising concern about the quality of education.
Our country has many government agencies repeating exact lines of functions and responsibilities. Many times, because they employ incompetence people to head offices, they end of leaving their statustory functions to dable into another agency's responsibilities. ASUU and NUC ought to have the best brains in this country and rancho free operations because they are the foundation on which all other sectors were built upon. But Nigeria can't cease to amaze all of us.

This is false.
I was equally miffed when I saw the new CCMA document. NUC powered Professor Okebukola to embark on the CCMA project. Key stakeholders were engaged at the earlier stages but left out during the critical review and finalisation stages.
This CCMA is one of the anyhowness of our Nigerian system

In Europe,US,Asia and even Some Africa countries, the curriculum start teaching the core and main rudiments of the course in question right from your first semester, first year till graduation but in Nigeria, they will carry all sought of irrelevant courses to load you and leave the main course you came to study.

Bro, that is Nigeria Uni for you, but for the Polytechnic, they start with your main course in your first semester.

CCMAS is definitely better than BMAS. Does ASUU realize that many Nigerian graduates are not hapy with currently existing curriculum of Nigerian universities? NUC upgrades the curriculum in such a way that universities will be more creative in adjusting their curricula to modern realities and ASUU is complaining. ASUU is actually portraying itself to be a useless association.

ASSU knows majority of its members are too old to adapt themselves to new NUC proposed curriculum. All they want is salary increment, and not academic adjustment that will make life become more difficult for them to deliver. They want to continue to recommend their boring theoretical jargons to NUC. Any ASSU lecturer that can not adapt to new curriculum should be shown way out, no one is ready to listen to ASSU excuses that they are fighting for quality education. ASSU is not really sincere, they only want easy way out of teaching. Only salary increment makes them happy.

On part of NUC, it is not enough to recommend or enforce curriculum, qualified, competent and talented teachers that can transfer knowledge to students easily should be hired while those lecturers with merely academic title like professors, doctors etc that can't transfered knowledge to their students through simple teachings should be laid off and paid off. Those that can function in research areas with results should be retained for research only and not teaching.

What is the benefit of professors and Drs that can't transfer knowledge to students through simple teachings, and can't also do any meaniful academic research that will attract industries with minimal resources? Lay them off and pay them their retirement benefits instantly! Let's make our education system becomes more functional to help our growing population
ASUU lecturers like you put it are doing well. At least I can boldly vouch for many of them in Pharmacy. Those guys are excellent but are being limited by lack of funds and machineries to carry out research. Many of them are still managing to research from the little salary they're being paid.
If we get things right in terms of funding, our lecturers in this country have all the potentials to excel above their counterparts in the international community.

So, stop degrading our lecturers. It'll be much better if you channel the energy in pressuring the government to fund our universities.

I'm quite surprised that ASUU is rejecting CCMAS. CCMAS has whittled down general studies credits from 36 to 12, which thereby creates more room for departments to teach students the main course from first year. The currently existing curriculum fills the first two years with so many irrelevant general studies courses. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, started the idea of general studies courses; but when I was a UNN student years ago, we only had GS 101, 103, 105 and 207. NUC BMAS adopted GS courses and escalated GS courses to cover 36 credit units, which suffocates the main course of study. In the CCMAS, GS courses cover only 12 credit units, leaving room for more main course credits.

The reality is that most ASUU members don't know how to fill up the remaining 30% of the curriculum, now that NUC provides only 70%. Most Nigerian lecturers are not creative; they always like copy-catting. Lazy folks.

This post aptly explains ASUU's position on CCMAS. The Nigerian university system actually lacks competent and talented teachers. Unfortunately, what it will take to have competent and talented teachers is quite complicated. As long as every person is paid same salary, no lecturer will be motivated to develop competency. A situation where every PhD Senior Lecturer is paid the same salary scale. A PhD in Computer Science that has world class certification in software development, machine learning, etc, is paid the same salary with PhD in Sociology without any proven practical competency; why should any lecturer aspire to be practically competent?

I quite agree with you. Most are just ceremonial academic title holders without any significant correlation with experience to match the reality of student needs, for a more productive society. They are primitive & unwilling to unlearn and relearn, this is why they'd prefer things to remain same. Imagine engineering faculty not able to produce something innovative.
