Seaport Terminal Operators Jack Up Cargo Handling Charges By 45% by rano1: 11:06am On Jul 02, 2023
There are strong indications that terminal operators at the nation’s seaports have jacked up the cargo handling rate by 45 per cent following the devaluation of the naira by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from N461 to N631 per US Dollar, which the apex bank sold at the Importers and Exporters (I&E) window.
Similarly, the Nigeria Customs Service has also adjusted its official exchange rate on duties payable on imports from $422.30 to $589 in line with the CBN’s directive.
Some of the services which terminal operators offer include, but are not limited to cargo handling, storage and examination.

From all indications, the new rates could invariably translate into a corresponding increase in the cost of imports as importers would want to add up the differential on items at the open market in the months ahead.

Vice President of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Dr Kayode Farinto, in an exclusive telephone chat with our correspondent, said that while he was attending the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting he got a call that terminal operators had increased their charges by 45 per cent.

He said the new CBN exchange rate was a welcome development, but that it would also bring about a temporary setback in the nation’s economy.

According to him, Nigeria as a nation has been living on borrowed robes in that it has two exchange rates: one for those going on pilgrimage and another for those doing business.

He said, “This is why the naira has continued a downward slide on a daily basis. Meanwhile, in the last eight years we have had some categories of elite who collect about $2m every Monday at official rate and sell at black market rate. Let us assume that we have about 200 Bureau De Changes (BDC) in Nigeria. Multiply it by the number I have just mentioned and by the number of Mondays we have had in the last eight years then you will know the colossal amount that Nigeria has lost in the last eight years.

“But looking at it from the maritime side of it as a freight forwarder, it is going to increase customs duty. Just last week, our official exchange rate was $422.30, but this week it has jumped to about $750. Meaning if for example I had a Pre-Arrival Assessment Report (PAAR) of say N10 million last week, I will now have to pay N12 million this week. That is the side effect of it.

Speaking also, Secretary of ANLCA at the Tin Can Island Port, Barr Ovien Imonitie, said that as at the last check on Saturday morning, the exchange rate had increased.

Do you want to borrow loans to do all those listed above or you want to generate the money internally without borrowing?

Lol …. The suffering is beyond what the masses can manage.

An import driven nation can’t survive these.

They steal your mandate
They sponsor tribal and religious political narratives
They bribe INEC
They bribe the Judiciary
They call your bluff and capture the state
They take away your fuel subsidy without fighting corruption
They take away your funding for tertiary education
They add VAT to your fuel and diesel
They introduce VAT on your carbonated drinks
The increase your electricity tariff by 40%
They increase their own salaries by 114%
They budget 24B for their HoA Accomodation
They budget SUVs for themselves, generals and service chiefs
They take looting to another level and they tell you to sacrifice
They pay propagandists to distract you from the evil they are inflicting on you in social and news media

You now trek like your life depends on it yet you can’t save anything, life is excruciating
You go to market and you can’t buy anything meaningful, you feel something is wrong with you
Your kids go to bed hungry and you blame yourself
You will withdraw your kids cos you can’t meet the new fees
Your thoughts are overwhelmed with the ways to survive, feeding has become luxury
You are contemplating quiting work because the salary cannot cover transport alone
You are frustrated

This the Truth: your political class are ready to punish you to death as long as they afford their extravagant lifestyle.

Unless you fight back and hold these criminals accountable, they will take away all you’ve got and dance on the grave of you and your loved ones.

You must take your life and your nation back

You guys are the real enemies of Nigeria. You sit in your face me I face you room to talk trash….. alright go ahead and start producing the basic needs from thin air.

A non-manufacturing nation will start production without any enablers

This govt won’t avoid an uprising.

This Mr. Farinto is very intelligent. He accepts the reality on ground.

His expose on the roundtripping that flourished under Buhari is testament to the monstrous corruption that thrived right under his nose.

Buhari enabled it by meddling in the exchange rates and Emefiele entrenched it by not resisting it and crying out. At least, Lamido Sanusi cried out when $20bn or so disappeared into thin air.

Emefiele just sst there and let the economy crumble.
