British Airways passengers on an Airbus A380 from Johannesburg to London Heathrow went on a 10-hour “flight to nowhere” when Niger’s airspace was suddenly closed late on Sunday night.

Other flights between the UK and South Africa have being re-routed or diverted to take on extra fuel or have returned to their starting points as a result of the closure.

After a military coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, the Ecowas regional bloc has threatened intervention to restore the leader.

In response, the ruling junta, led by General Abdourahmane Tchiani, closed the vast country – which is six times the area of Great Britain – to overflying aircraft.

The closure took effect at 11.22pm British time on Sunday, when several UK-South Africa flights were already airborne.

Airspace over Sudan and Libya is already closed to commercial aviation. The addition of Niger means there is now a block to north-south flights across Africa stretching around 2,600 miles from western Niger to the Red Sea.

Last I checked the airspace is closed to flights below FL270.

Can Niger even police their airspace ?

Do they have total radar coverage or the resources to enforce a total airspace lockdown?

They've only two rusty SU-25s and zero SAMs.

The junta is a joke.

Any plane that cross the airspace can be brought down fatally. It's better to avoid their airspace

Passengers travelling out of Abuja to Europe and North America should expect increase in Cost of Ticket as well as increase in travel time .

Lets hope Mali ,Burkina faso and Gambia does not enforce no fly zone .it will be catastrophe for Airlines and their passengers travelling out of Nigeria .

No Airline in the world will fly over active conflict zone or when Countries declares no flight zone .

Example of Malaysian airline MH 17 shot done over ukraine and subsequent bankruptcy of Malaysian airline made all the airlines of the world to avoid global hot spots .

Airlines have totally avoided Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen for many years .

The only reason commercial flights will avoid the airspace because no insurance company will cover them if they route through Niger airspace.

On Saturday, the African Union (AU) gave the soldiers 15 days to return to their barracks and restore civil rule in the country.
Niger will also be suspended from all financial assistance and transactions with financial institutions within ECOWAS.

Peace is all we want in our world.

God bless AFRICA......from all of us @MANNA!

GOD BLESS NIGERIA 🇳🇬

The way Tinubu is going about this is not right. Everything is all about dialogue, especially when it's a matter that doesn't concern you.

Even the matter that concerns you, e.g. someone owes you money, and refuses to pay back, you will still dialogue.

Buhari was chairman of ECOWAS when there was coup in Mali and the other country. He didn't do anything. Buhari is military general and he was quiet about it. Why? Because he knows the extent military officers go when provoked.

Now Tinubu is provoking Niger's military officers in their own matter. Please he should calm down o, because the entire West Africa would be on shutdown.

May God bless us all. Amen!

Do you realise you're out of point, or I should tell you?
