A delegation consisting of the representatives of the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the United Nations will on Tuesday travel to Niger to meet with coup leaders.

French broadcaster RFI reported that the delegation is set to arrive in the Nigerien capital city of Niamey “in the coming hours” to hold talks with the rebels on behalf of the international community.

The move was in a bid to restore the country’s disbanded institutions, the broadcaster reported.

According to the broadcaster, the Nigerian government had also boosted that Nigeria can provide more than half of the 25,000 troops for the invasion of Niger if necessary, citing a Nigerian official.

It added that military from Senegal, Benin and Cote d’Ivoire could also participate in the operation.

On 26 July 2023, a coup d’état occurred in Niger when the country’s presidential guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum and presidential guard commander General Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself the leader of a new military junta.

The presidential guard thereby closed the country’s borders, suspended state institutions, and declared a curfew.

This was the fifth military coup d’état since the country gained independence from France in 1960, and the first since 2010.

On 6 August, 57,000 soldiers were counted among the putschists, and 245,000 on the ECOWAS side, with France refusing to intervene

African Union gives Niger rebels 15-day ultimatum

If General Omar Tchiani and his men do not yield, the AU has threatened to impose what it has called "extreme sanctions" on the African nation.

The African Union has issued a 15-day ultimatum to the junta in Niger to reinstall the country’s democratically elected government just as the coup leaders met with senior civil servants to discuss how they would run the country and as the United States and the European Union threatened sanctions against the regime.

After its meeting on Friday, the African Union Peace and Security Council said it was concerned by the “alarming resurgence” of coups that undermine democracy and stability on the continent. It asked the soldiers to “return immediately and unconditionally to their barracks and restore constitutional authority, within a maximum of fifteen (15) days.”

Bazoum, whose condition and that of his officials remain unknown since the government was overthrown, should also be released immediately and unconditionally, the AU said. Failure to do so would compel the bloc to take “necessary action, including punitive measures against the perpetrators.”

On the streets of the Nigerien capital Niamey on Saturday, things appeared to be returning to normal, though many in the international community were still on lockdown with hotels full of foreigners, many given instructions not to leave.

Could a former president be behind the coup?
General Abdourahmane 'Omar' Tchiani, the junta leader and commander of Niger's presidential guard, is close to former Nigerien president Mahamadou Issoufou, who stepped down in 2021 after a decade in office. Tchiani's takeover of power will reinforce speculation that Issoufou is behind the coup, said Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel program at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, a German think tank and consultancy.

The US threatened to halt its economic support to Niger while the European Union announced the immediate indefinite suspension of budgetary support and security assistance.

AU and ECOWAS that could not proffer solutions on how to reduce poverty in Africa is concerned about democracy.
What's the usefulness of a system of Government that can not better the lives of the people.

Good!!!

The main reason I voted for the president is because he's the boss of all bosses, you can't remote control him.

He's not gonna be weakling president who's gonna be teleguided like some people's Messiah who's a poster boy for the Pandora paper.

Asiwaju got the balls and his balls are well and alive.

Only the legitimately elected leaders can do that not impostors.

I dare you to carry arms and then announce that your region has exited Nigeria let's see what happens.

A lot of coups has been perpetrated in Nigeria with the citizens in full support and dancing on the streets......after few months, they will start to wail. Full crack-down on the media, no opposition, journalists deaths, no gathering of more than 20, atrocities by the army personnel etc. But y'all are happy that coup took place in Niger and some are praying for same to happen in Nigeria just because of hatred..... go and ask Malians and Guineans what they are facing now....

Hopefully, the Niger junta will come to a form of agreement....but military rule must be eradicated from Niger coz its gonna be one of the worst things to happen to Nigeria especially if this guy is sympathetic to this boko haram ideology.....

To the Russian sympathizers.....

The Russians, West and Chinese are here for their respective interests.....Just that Africans are so pathetic that the whole world is using their lands and destinies as playgrounds.....even Indians are colonizing us in our own land!.....

Wagner mercenaries are being paid in crude oil in Libya and paid in Gold in DRC..... if they come into Niger, they will be paid in Uranium and believe me, they wont let go of these assets.....at least not without a fight..... And from Niger, they will be tampering with our affairs here coz we are more tilted towards the west and these interference might be in form of funding radical sects.....!

One thing i know is that military in Niger must not stay coz i believe its a threat to Nigeria's security......

As Long as ECOWAS Tolerates Institutional Coup That Allows Lifetime Presidency & Fraudulent Declaration of Election Results , Manipulation of Judicial Pronouncement, There Will Be Always a Military Coup,
We Cannot Condemn a Military Coup When We Do Not Condemn Those Who Carry Out Institutional Coup
