Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos has highlighted the lack of human rights in Saudi Arabia and criticised players moving to the Middle Eastern state in the prime of their careers

Toni Kroos has criticised players moving to Saudi Arabia by claiming that it is “ruining football” while he would not go there due to human rights issues

The Real Madrid midfielder’s comments come a week after he labelled the decision of Gabri Veiga to leave Celta Vigo for the Middle East as ‘embarrasing’. Veiga had been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool this summer while a deal was Napoli was in place before he joined Al-Ahli.

Based in Jeddah, Al-Ahli have been one of the most active Saudi clubs in the summer transfer window. A multitude of Euro-based players have moved to Saudi Arabia this summer in a concentrated recruitment drive by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of the nation funding transfers.

Roberto Firmino, Edouard Mendy, Franck Kessie, Allan Saint-Maximin, Merih Demiral, Riyad Mahrez and Roger Ibanez have all left European clubs for Al-Ahli this summer – while multiple others have also moved to Saudi Arabia.

Cristiano Ronaldo began the trend by joining Al-Nassr in January, while the likes of Sadio Mane, Fabinho, Karim Benzema, Ruben Neves, Alex Telles, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Kalidou Koulibaly, Sadio Mane and Neymar have all moved to Saudi – with Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah also linked

Kroos explained to Sports Illustrated that a lack of human rights in Saudi Arabia is “the one thing that would stop me from making such a move.” However, the midfielder added: “Everyone has to make this decision for themselves, such as Cristiano Ronaldo, who decided to do so towards the end of his career

But it becomes very difficult when players who are in the middle of their careers and have the quality to play for top clubs in Europe decide to make such changes. And then it is said that it is an ambitious sporting decision to go there, but the truth is that it's all about the money.

Ruben Neves said it.

Koulibaly did too

Ighalo reiterated it

Laporta and even UEFA president repeated it this morning.

Only penaldians thinks it’s because of him players are moving to Saudi.

CR7 38
Benzema 35
Henderson 33
Kante 32
Mahrez 32
Neymar 31
Mane 31
Firmino 31
All these players are almost done with football.

If the league is attractive, Mbappe and Osimhen will not reject them.

We will be seeing prime players like
Haaland
Mbappe
Osimhen
Vinicius
Musiala
Pedri
Saka
Rashford
Enzo
Foden
Martinelli
Nkunku
Gvardiol

I don't understand. Are they supposed to go there to count the sand in the desert? Of course money must be involved.

But it's only Ororo and other players above 34 I can vouch for. If the players are younger than that, then I also have to question their passion for such moves.

Most football lovers like me will watch the league sha. They have too much stars to be ignored.

What's toni kroos smoking.
Guess he's receiving larger bucks that's same range as Saudi players in Europe so he wants them to remain second class to his kind financially.

Saudi's league ought to be retirement league for top players but many are heading there while still in their prime.

But why should everyone stay in Europe to play football?

Alot of changes happening already in the world.

Europe is getting abandoned gradually and things are shifting elsewhere.

Anyone can go there even if you are 18! Why must you be old to play in Saudi. It's the oyinbo that think their land is better than anywhere else I am ashamed of. Time changes. Even men turn into women now. They need to accept the change that there are football league elsewhere. In Europe, they tax you 50% of your earnings but it isn't up to 15% in Saudi. The girls don't go take to court by speaking to them but that is what you see in europe and turn it to rape!

Imagine this guy saying "lack of human rights" is stopping him from making such a move.

Yet it was in his own home country in Berlin, the year 1886, that his ancestors and fellow european criminals divided Africa for their loot not minding our human rights.

The wave of revolution happening across the so-called francophone countries are a direct result of his ancestors...yet I scarcely recall him making a mention of the notoriety of his ancestors.

The same way England, France, U.S and Canada have pinned africa down on the neck with their knees, many are not aware Germany too had colonies in Africa. It was the war they fought amongst themselves, the 2nd world war, that made Germany lose its "territories" in africa.

Very obtusely greedy people.

Anyway, seems Kroos is subtly shading his former teammate...otherwise he would have restrained till his illustrious former teammate retires or close to.

Tempted to say "God bless Russia". Call them evil, your choice, but from the look of things, they are necessary.

In the end, all man to his choice. I will also say this again, the money was / is a huge factor but denying the fact that Ronaldo’s presence also influenced some of these players, means you are just one confirmed hater and there’s nothing your hate can do to change it ! 😛

These people especially the English press are trying to morally and emotionally abuse these players moving to the Saudi Pro League.

Of course money is critical!....the English premier league became the best league in the world due to money....West ham and Brighton at the moment can outbid any Italian team in the market not to talk about the EPL top six....

Moreover, these clubs are the ones chasing these players away.....Ronaldo waited and waited for an European team to sign him all to no avail....dem now dey cry say na money!.....

Wait until Saudi knock on his door too. The he goat said Saudi has no human right. You can't get better human right anywhere else on earth. What they don't have is unlimited freedom for gays like you to come and distort the natural order. The league is almost as tough as Premier league and certainly stronger than Laliga. Mercy is in Inter Miami a team FIFA rated beliow Kano Pillars of Nigeria. If he isn't there for money why is almighty Mercy is in such a farmer league. Na jealous go wreck you Tony.

It's not only football. Saudi is massively recruiting professionals and paying them crazy. They are a monarchy serious and passionate about their country, putting their oil money to good use, not embezzling like our Islamic elites in Nigeria.
