Nuraddeen Auwalu, a middle-aged taxi driver hailing from a Zamfara State community, defies economic hardships by doubling as a casual contract worker in a local mining company. His daily journey to the mining site, concealed beneath his taxi driver guise, is fraught with danger due to rampant bandit activity along the roads.

In Zamfara State, the pervasive banditry has instilled fear among road users, deterring many from venturing out. Neighboring Katsina State shares a similar plight, exemplified by a deadly attack on a gold mining and processing site in January 2022.

Despite these security concerns, Saturday PUNCH ventured into one of Anka, Zamfara's largest mining sites, accompanied by former Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Usman Nagoggo. The journey was marked by trepidation, but Nagoggo assured the team of safety, backed by heavily armed police mobile officers in 16 vehicles.

Upon arrival at the mining site, fortified with security personnel, the team observed a sprawling complex hidden within the forest, complete with high-tech mining equipment and facilities. The inner environment boasted modern amenities, including a clinic, piped water, a restaurant, and comfortable accommodation.

The mining process remained a closely guarded trade secret, involving the separation of raw gold from other materials through meticulous washing and flushing. Zamfara's gold deposits, estimated to account for over 40% of Nigeria's total, have made the state a hotspot for banditry.

Despite the security challenges, thousands of legal and illegal gold miners, like James Udoji, continue their work, emphasizing the need for investment and community support. Udoji, originally from Anambra State, invested heavily in the Zamfara mining site and contributed to local infrastructure, such as road construction.

He stressed the importance of government support, lamenting the impact of the Zamfara State Government's mining ban, which has affected mining activities and caused losses. Udoji received his mining license from the Federal Government and paid annual royalties to them. He called for a reevaluation of the ban, highlighting the potential benefits for Zamfara State.

With over 300 workers under his employ, Udoji planned to expand his workforce by 2,000 once construction was completed. He hoped to convey the reality of mining activities in Zamfara State to Southern Governors, emphasizing the importance of government backing in unlocking the region's mining potential.

Good one!

Commendable project!

Not building stadiums and airport in deadlock places.

Osun state should be doing similar projects but the brain governing the state is incapacitated.

The truth, no matter how long it takes, cannot be concealed forever.

Amidst the high level of banditry and insecurity, the same people chanting ”crude oyel is for Nigeria but gold is only for the North” still found their way to Zamfara’s gold and are planning to invite other southern leaders to join the party up North.

Africans needs to go back to the drawing board and re evaluate the value of currency to be backed by real gold, else those bloody Americans would just buy it with their printed dollar and value it to their economy.

The level of gold discovery going on in Nigeria in recent years is massive and should make an impact soonest.

Anambra people love and worship money. There are many of them working in Borno state at the height of boko haram.
This is the reason many of them are in prisons in Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brazil, South Africa. Name any notorious prison in the world and see if an Ibo man isn’t in there.
It’s nothing to be celebrated. Your south east is overwhelmed with violence and destruction while some of them are online shouting Ibo amaka.

Lol people like you are either lazy or liars. Legal mining is taxed and that revenue is shared. That data is published regularly but you're not interested.

One thing I have been advocating for is total ban on all mining activities in Zamfara, Sokoto and Katsina till laws are passed and regulations put in place with clear identity of all players involved.

I agree with you that the mining sector needs to be deeply sanitized and closely regulated going forward. I hope the supervising minister has the boldness to face the powerful players and enforce the needed reset.

The west really made a mess of africa's economy, how is it that countries with verifiable material resources do not have convertible currencies ........while the west mass prints their fiat currencies like confetti!
