The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved the name change of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League.

The NFF approved the new name during its 79th general assembly in Uyo on Sunday, September 10, 2023.

Ahead of the 2023-2024 season, the new NPFL board changed the league's name to the Nigeria Premier Football League and also unveiled the league's new logo without the approval of the NFF.

In reaction to that, the NFF issued a statement to warn the board that only the football governing body has the authority to sanction such changes. Hence, the issue had to be presented and addressed at the general assembly.

In a communique after the meeting, the NFF announced, "The congress approved the change of name of the Nigeria Professional Football League to the Nigeria Premier Football League."
The 2023-2024 NPFL season ought to commence on Saturday with a game between 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan.

However, the commencement of the new season was postponed barely three days to kick off due to what the board of directors characterized as sponsorship-related requirements.

A new commencement date is scheduled to be disclosed in due course.

Enyimba football club of Aba are the current champions of the league, and they will have enough time in their hands this season to defend the title since they have been knocked out of the preliminary stage of the CAF Champions League.

More like changing the name of Nigeria to UAR cheesy
Invest in the league and make it more attractive. The quality of football played in the northern and southern part of the continent is top notch.
One can have a good time watching Egypt, Algeria, or even the leagues of Morocco but such can't be said about Nigeria.

those it change anything?
people has seriously losing interest in the Nigerian leagues. I remember then we had Enyimba, Kano pillars. these teams were badass teams and most players representing the national teams were mostly selected from them. now everything is now foreign players, so how will the local league survive?

Nigerian League and NTA, I don't know which one is more disappointing. When it comes to management at the National level, just forget it.
It's so painful that there's nothing constructive critics can do.

It not only sounds good. It also shows we are going to be in the league of top leagues by God's grace.
Nigerian players are practically making other leagues successful, let's bring this charity back home as government and private sponsors invest in the success of this league.

May be with the new name ,our professional league can Improve

The other day, the Nigeria referees banned any local players from pulling off their jerseys when celebrating goals.

The last player who pulled off his shirt for goal celebration got the linesman fainted because of the body odour, so it was finally banned.

How will new name bring Goodluck to Nigerias local league?

Which league in the world got luck by changing it's name?

The start of the league has been postponed several times this year's. Is it name change that will make the league to start?

Changing the name alone is the beginning of reform in our local league. The past governments have not been remembering them

Not necessarily the name change. Any one can change their name and nothing changes. But this seems to be rightly done at the rightful time. My opinion.

You didn't answer my questions.

1. How will new name bring Goodluck to Nigerias local league?

2. Which league in the world got luck by changing it's name?

3. The start of the league has been postponed several times this year's. Is it name change that will make the league to start?

4. How is name change "alone" the beginning of reforms in Nigerias local league?

5. What are those "reforms"?

If you claim that name change doesn't change anything, what then makes the name change "seems to be rightly done at the rightful time"?

Lack of transparency in the league management is driving investors away, and without good investment the league will not be nice, all of a sudden Saudi Arabia league is now hot.

FG didn't just wake up to come up with the new name. It must have been something debated amongst the football professionals in Nigeria before reaching the conclusion of changing the name.

FG intervention in the Nigeria professional League this time is just a sign of changes about to come in our sports generally in Nigeria.

Which decades last did Nigeria Super Eagles score 5 goals in a match?
