So coal is not called in at all?

Coal tar is synthesized from the production of coke from coal. Coal is not used in road construction!

Bitumen is derived as a by-product from the fractional distillation of crude oil. Assume say we dey refine our crude ourselves we for get plenty bitumen for road!

Bitumen is derived naturally from crude oil.
Your explanation is not very clear oooo. I just want to know, is there any product from coal that can be used on roads?

Yes, coal tar can be made from coal. This can be used in road construction!

But it will be economically to use bitumen derived from crude oil.

Let me ask? They use to tell me that coals are use to tar roads. That's why we call a popular name "corotar" meaning "coal tar".

If true, can Enugu state make use of this with chippings from Ebonyi state to fix our streets? It will be cheaper and we will get most streets fixed.
coal is used during ashpahlting later process if am not mistaking

And you don't just ashpalt road without proper construction

I am sure the federal government and security agencies have hands in all these illegal mining activities going on across the country.
If not how can mining of this magnitude be going on for years without the country benefiting anything from it.

Damn straight, you're right, someone in government gave them right of way because of peanuts. It's rather disheartening that we Nigerians are our own problem.

If the government don't want to mine then let the people mine, what is the problem? Afterall it is the people's coal.

Next time ask Google, not half smart people on nairaland. One even said coal tar is not used but bitumen.

Coal tar is the reminant by product of the process of turning coal into coke. A pyrosis or destructive distillation of coal where it in heated in non oxidizing atmosphere to produce methane coal gas, Coke and this reminant liquid tar. Coke is used in cement production and iron smelting. So a good guess is that the illegal mining operation is feeding coal to dangote or Unicem cement factories. More on that at the end.

Of course secondary school chemistry will tell you you can do same to ordinary wood and get another similar viscous liquid called wood tar.

When you distill petroleum (crude oil) you are left with an equivalent of its own tar, which basically cannot be broken into smaller usefully products. That's what we call bitumen. It also occurs naturally from aged petroleum deposits. In USA , if its the naturally occurring on, they call it bitumen, the synthetic one from refinery they call asphalt. Internationally, both are called bitumen, and the when mixed with aggregates is called asphaltic concrete.

All these tars are composed of a lot of unknown chemicals both mostly heavy or long chain aromatic hydrocarbons.

Tar concrete was invented using coal tar. And roads were built with coal tar. But the emergence of petroleum refinery industry means that its major waste, bitumen was way cheaper to obtain than coal tar. So the shift to bitumen.

Ultimately coal tar is superior to bitumen as it is more chemically resistant, but costs more.

Back to industry.
It is good that Mba is focusing back on coal. He is looking at coal thermal power. But a low Hanging fruit to pluck is cement and iron. Synergies between Enugu and Ebonyi state can repair and Revive the Old Eastern flag ship- NigerCem with the new owner Ibeto whom Elechi Amadi frustrated all his efforts at the behest of Dangote. NigerCem can control some 20% of Nigeria's cement market. Do not build a new factory, just repair and re-equip the old one.

Dangote, Unicem, Ajoakuta steel, Sokoto Cement all use coal. So investing in a Coal Methanization plant will be a good idea. The methane generated or coal gas can be supplied to factories in Emene, while the reminant is sold as coke to the cent factories.

Coal has no value again at the international market.

But I will advise Ibos to preserve it till you get your biafra, since there is no other resources in that region.

Hmmmmm

Nawa for Nigeria o

The audacity with which people indulge in illegal activities in this country is mind boggling!

People would just collude among themselves and in connivance with corrupt security agencies and start sabotaging the state's economic bases. The situation is even worse with petroleum mining!

Such actions should be treasonable and I think it's time the goverment fought that menace with all the seriousness it deserves. Some people should be publicly scapegoated to serve as deterrent to others.

Ever heard of Anambra Geological Basin? It's oil is untouched. We are all enjoying the Niger Delta awoof.

Where do you think Oguta Gas gathering is located. We turn it off, the cheap gas that factories are rushing to ogun state to use will be choked off. They start relocating.

Do you know why the soil in the East is red? Iron. We can leach iron from just to soil we walk on daily.

Coal is powering the Chinese economy through methanization. Both China and Russia are still exporting coal.

They can seize and convert to Enugu state owned company or they penalized the company and merge with them.

Imagine millions of $ these miners are making.

This reasoning is very poor. Because another man allows evil in his own land, you also must allow evil in your own land. Please we don't need this kind of destruction in Igboland. Erosion is a big problem here

Yes Coal tar But...
Bitumen is still preferable than coal tar in road construction.
Bitumen is easier to get than Coal tar.

Which means coal can still be used. Getting goal in ENUGU is easier than getting sand. Any well you dig gives you coal. If this can be of any help on roads, why are the streets messed up? This is what is getting me mad

Enugu is called Coal City state for a reason, however I support the state government’s decision to close the sites. The operators of those sites should be arrested as well and their vehicles and equipment confiscated.

Have you been to Onyeama mine, Iva Valley and other parts of the state where the British mined coal? It’s an ecological disaster. Land and topography ruined and has continued to ecologically affect the state. Enugu and south east states are disadvantaged as per land mass and mining should be discouraged.

My place is rich in kaolin and the place is ravaged by erosion. We are not as blessed as Nasarawa, Yobe, Adamawa, Kaduna and Zamfara states in terms of land mass. You could excavate a massive hole as big as a football field in these states and still be safe living in a building built on the cliff or edge of the hole. You can’t do that in most of south east states. You can’t even live a few hundred meters away from this ecological disasters without worrying.

You people should stop blaming the governors or comparing the illegal mines in SE to those of the north. Anyone caught digging up the earth in south east with those mechanised equipment in search of coal or any other mineral should be arrested.

The British ravaged and messed up Enugu. They even had to create Port Harcourt so they could transport coal out of Nigeria. We are facing the consequences now.
