The Nigerian Navy's amphibious ships (mainly landing ship tanks) are named after crocodiles. We had NNS Ambe. Ambe means crocodile in Tiv Language. We had NNS Offiom. Offiom means crocodile in Efik. The new landing ship tank is named NNS Kada. Kada means crocodile in Hausa (hence Kaduna, from the crocodile river).

Landing ship tanks were very important in the Second World War. They were used for the invasion of Normandy in Europe (the D-Day landings) and for the island hopping campaign in Asia (when Allied forces were fighting Japanese forces from island to island).

Landing ship tanks (LSTs) are used to land tanks, other vehicles, soldiers/marines on undeveloped shores (that is, shores without ports). They usually have a roll on-roll off ramp from which vehicles can drive directly from ship to beach and some also have cranes that are used to offload goods. Basically, LSTs are used for amphibious invasions.

NNS Ambe was very important for Nigeria's Ecomog operations in Liberia and Sierra Leone. It was used to take tanks, Pinzgauers, Land Rovers (and other vehicles) and soldiers to Liberia and Sierra Leone and to carry refugees (especially Nigerians that were trapped in the two countries, but also Ghanaians, Liberians and Sierra Leonians) to Lagos.

The new LST was ordered circa 2018 and was completed in 2022. It has a flight deck for helicopter operations.

Amphibious assault ships are similar to LSTs, but they have the ability to drop off their load out at sea. The limitation of LSTs is that they have to land their cargo on the shore and this makes them susceptible to fire from shore defences. For example, NNS Ambe could not land its cargo when it first got to Liberia because Samuel Doe and Charles Taylor's forces were fighting in the port area. It was only able to land because Doe's forces won that battle.

An amphibious assault ship can drop off assault amphibious vehicles on the high seas and the vehicles will swim to land. It can drop off soldiers on rubber rafts and the soldiers will sail to land. It usually carries helicopters and its attack helicopters can attack shore defences, while its transport helicopters can land soldiers/marines and equipment.

The French ship that took part in the exercise, FS Mistral, is an amphibious assault ship.

(Pictures below = NNS Kada).
