🇷🇺 Russia and Burkina Faso Forge New Energy Partnership.

In a landmark move geared towards improving its energy landscape, Burkina Faso's military leaders have signed a deal with Russia to build a nuclear power plant to increase electricity.

It is the junta's latest move to align itself with Russia after falling out with most of its Western partners.

The junta has turned to Russia for economic and military support since it seized power last year.

Burkina Faso is one of the least electrified countries globally, with only 21% of people connected to power. An MoU, that has been under discussion between the two nations, is for the construction of a nuclear power plant in the West African nation, aiming to address its acute electricity shortage.

This agreement has been the outcome of extended discussions held between the Burkinabe military ruler, Capt Ibrahim Traore, and Russian President Vladimir Putin during the Russia-Africa summit in July. The upcoming MoU will be officially signed between the Russian federal atomic energy agency, Rosatom, and the Burkinabe ministry of energy. The signing is set to coincide with the Russian Energy Week 2023.

Burkina Faso, one of the least electrified countries in the world, is in dire need of energy solutions. Currently, only about 20% of its population has access to electricity, as reported by the International Energy Atomic Agency. This lack of electricity access is a significant impediment to the country’s development, impacting everything from education to healthcare.

Burkina Faso would have gotten investors like Russia to generate electricity for them using renewable energy sources instead of nuclear power source inorder to avoid the hazards associated with nuclear power

You need a shit tonne of fresh water to maintain a nuclear reactor .

The fuel rods heat up water and from there turn it into steam that drives an electric turbine.

Water is key in a nuclear energy reactor .

You need water to both convert to steam and to keep the nuclear rods from melting down and spewing radiation everywhere.

And what is the Upper Volta River for

Same way he promised to complete Ajaokuta. Africans rely too much on these foreign powers. By the way, you can't build a nuclear power plant without a large body of water for cooling.
And you aren't informed about their Upper Volta River?

And what is the Upper Volta River for
A river that has its levels drastically reduced during the dry season ?

Unless they are going to build a huge damn to store water for the reactors.

Then the next issue is how do you get rid of the spent heavy water ?

If Bukina faso’s numerous Rebels throw a Bomb there

Chernobyl nuclear disaster will look like Child’s play

Africans have a very good reason for avoiding Nuclear Energy

They cannot handle it

Ghana will be the first to oppose it and rightly so

Followed by Ivory Coast

A nuclear disaster in Burkina Faso will affect both of them next door

Try suggesting we should build a nuclear plant in this country...infact open a thread here on our need for nuclear power

You would get a lot of Fukushima -spooked people screaming about how Nigeria is not ready, and if the thing explodes....

This naive and thoughtless Burkina Faso leader should seek other investments for his country.
Building nuclear reactors in his country is something the west would never agree with. He will simply attract sanctions, sponsored counter coups and foreign backed civil insurgents into his country.

We got to know ourselves by now and exactly who and what we are and capable.

This is not about tribe really. Some people no just get sense.

These guys championing the Igbo vs Yoruba vs Hausa are not anywhere near the gate, not to talk of the table where the decision about the future of the country is made.

The fact remains that we have two tribes and religions in the country - The rich and the poor. Whether Tinubu, Atiku, or PO becomes the president, it does not change anything. The sharing continues. The only difference is who sits at the front and shares it with the rest.

That the president is from a state does not have ANY impact on the state populace. We had two former heads of state from Niger, but Mina the state capital is in a sorry state. Katsina where I reside for several years was not impacted by the 8 years of Buhari's presidency. While he engineered the institutions of several infrastructures in Daura, his people are still poor till tomorrow. Ogun roads are terrible despite OBJ's presidency. What about Bayesla? Was GEJ's home at Otuoke not flooded recently?

Regardless of who becomes the president, Nigeria is doomed if we refuse to wise up.

They have perfected the use of religion and ethnicity to further ensure Nigerians are never united to fight this injustice. Remember what the Nassaraw Governor said this week about his sack by the Tribunal?
