If an Ekiti boy like that jmaine knew the worth of money, will he be asking Ekiti to educate Delta indigenes even though Delta is richer than Ekiti?

So because am from Ekiti State, i must buy into your hilarious ideology that Discriminatory policies is a sign of good governance . . . and you even blundered firther by equating it with the Lagos State tax payment enforcement rule that wards must present a tax clearance from their guardains before they enjoy the free education benefits.  A regulaion that is not in itself biased or discriminates along indigenous rule . . .You need to revisit the true meaning of discrimination . . .

Now back to the topic

Am a proponent of quality education . . .and quality education requires funding . . .if one must get quality, one must be ready to pay . . . The Lagos state Government decision to increase the school fees is understandable, which is to make the school administration and management more productive . . . But the shock and abrupt manner of increase is what is generating the out cry . . .and the students who are crying foul to this sudden change are correct in their stance cos there was no window period for them to adjust to the sharp increase. . . The high percentage increase in school fees within a short period was unfair to the students . . . A graded increase in tuition would have been a more preferable option . . .

No matter how you want to debate this . . .both sides are correct to some extent . . .it was just the implementation process that seemed a harsh decision by the State Government . . . . This debacle can be solved through a mutual compromise by both parties involved which are the students and the government . . . .

and btw, Akanbi . . .Never you try to use my state of origin as a blackmail tool . . .i don't do blind support . . .

Jmaine.

If you give concession to some students based on tax clearance, what do you call that?

Bruv Akanbi, a prove of tax clearance is a way of enforcing the civic rule of taxation for developmental purposes. . .the tax payers money is what is being used to fund those concessions . . .and if you are to benefit, moral has it that you must be a contributor and not a leach or cheat to other responsible citizens who pay their tax. . . .This tax enforcement rule applies to everyone, even if you are a Non- Nigerian . . .and that is not a discriminatory act cos the law cater and applies to any one regardless of nationality, state of origin or affiliations  . . . Discrimination would only come in when the law is applied on offender A but is not applied on offender B due to some tribal, ethnic, religious or racial  reasons . . .  Your presenting your tax clearance before you enjoy Govt goodwill is just a mitigative measures to encourage tax payment compliance by eligible inhabitants.

Guess, we are derailing the thread . . .wasn't intentional OP . . .

Education should not be a revenue generating mechanism be it at primary, secondary or tertiary level. It is the duty of government to provide education at all levels. If fees are to be charged, the average wages in the country should be used as a guide in arriving at a justifiable fee . A situation were it would take If 14 salary (calculating with the minimum wage ) just to pay tuition for one student for one session is unjustifiable. When we compare the fees paid in Nigeria to those paid in Europe and America, we conveniently DIS REMEMBER the purchasing power of the western world and the safety nets like education loans and scholarships that are easily available. Last time I checked there were still countries that offered education at all levels to their citizens.
In the case of Nigeria, masses have been over stretched. They are forced to provide their own water, electricity, and security because these social services simply not being provided adequately by the government. Arbitrarily increasing the cost of education with out providing workable safety nets is callous.
The argument that Nigerian Universities are not charging commensurate fees is also flawed. Let us not forget that no one economic model is perfect. In the nineties when communism collapsed every body believed that communism was backward and retrogressive. Now capitalism is on the brink of collapse –evidenced by the severe economic crises in the US and Western Europe. Ironically the most stable economy as of today is “Communist China”. The point being that Nigerians should not be forced to pay so much for education because other countries do; neither should education be free just because it is free in other countries. The authorities should consider the average earning power of her citizens in fixing these fees so that the poor masses are not deprived the chance of bettering their lot. 250K as tuition in a government university is simply too much!!

Awo's policies, also remember that he didn't just declare them w/o having the economic/fiscal might to back it up.

Western Region was +50% wealthier per capita than either of the other two regions at the time. The same free education which Awo declared in the West, they tried something similar in the East and it failed.

So we need to be careful with these references to what Awo accomplished. Awo was not the type of man (at least based on the biographies I have read of him) to go for cheap populist moves without the CASH to back it up and do it properly.

What most folks don't even realize was that Awo's "free" education was never free. Every parent in the then SW region of the Sixties was levied an education tax per head. It was about 7 pounds (b4 Nigeria switched to Naira) then. This forced every parent to ensure their kids attended school as the levy was imposed whether your kids go to school or not. The mostly agrarian SW citizens complained bitterly about this tax and how it forced them to forego their young children's help on their farms. The "free" education was ONLY for basic (primary) education and it was universal in compliance.

Those who cite European or Scandinavian countries for their "free" qualitative education system constantly omit the confiscatory tax regime imposed by those countries on their citizens (45 to 55% tax rate shocked). Why won't they enjoy their "free" education or healthcare? grin Even the "free" elementary and high school education in the US is paid for by hefty property taxes imposed by local jurisdictions on property owners in that area. Yet we in Nigeria feel entitled to things we refuse to pay for! And still complain of the shitty quality we get.

A 25 grand tuition fee = £100.  shocked

Even if 250k is a bit too much for students, we need to know quality education comes at a price.

How would you compare your £100 a year degree to say a £3500 UK degree?

I wonder o

And people are surprised that nobody wants to hire Nigerians

Why are making false, misleading comparisons?
What is the minimum wage in the UK ?
How much does the MPs and Prime Minister earn in the UK compared to their minimum wage earner?
Can you compare that difference to that between Nigerian legislators and President/Governors versus N18,000 minimum wage?
How many of the students receive scholarship in UK universities?
Are there viable options to a university degree in the UK compared to Nigeria?

Where are you getting this rubbish spin from
Jakande and other UPN governors gave free education up to secondary school level, including textbooks, of which Babatunde Raji Fashola must have beneffited as a student in Birch Freeman from 1978-1983 assuming he did not repeat any class.
Moreover since Tinubu's days IGR for Lagos has increased from taxes many 100s times over compared to what Jakande received.
