The report of the Council of Ministers specifies that this bill "is part of the realization of one of the main missions of the transition which consists of initiating political, administrative and institutional reforms to strengthen the culture democratically and consolidate the rule of law.

Among the "major innovations" of this new text is "the establishment of national languages as official languages in place of French which becomes the working language".

Earlier this year, Mali, governed like Burkina by the military and which also maintains terrible relations with France, had modified its Constitution by referendum and reserved the same fate for the French.

This bill, which must still be voted on by the Transitional Legislative Assembly, also provides for "the establishment of traditional and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms".

The Constitutional Council sees its missions expanded while institutions are abolished such as the High Court of Justice which judges senior political figures or the Mediator of Faso.

Finally, the powerful National Intelligence Agency (ANR) sees its status reinforced by now being protected in the Constitution.

In recent months, several demonstrations for the adoption of a new Constitution have taken place in the country. Captain Ibrahim Traoré, who came to power in September 2022, had promised a partial modification of the Constitution two months ago.

“The writing of a new Constitution is a question of political, economic and cultural sovereignty. No one can truly flourish from the concepts of others,” Prime Minister Apollinaire Joachimson Kyelem of Tambela declared on Friday, alluding to texts modelled on the French constitution.

Since Captain Traoré came to power, Burkina has moved away from France, a former colonial power and historic partner, while moving closer to Moscow.

Since 2015, Burkina has been caught in a spiral of violence perpetrated by jihadist groups, which were already hitting neighbouring Mali and Niger and which left more than 17,000 dead.

Good one for them. Finally Francophone African countries are beginning to break and shake off the shackles of neocolonialism from France.
That's how Vietnam, Cambodia abandoned French language immediately after independence from France in 1945 and 1953 respectively. They turned to their languages - Vietnamese and Khmer as official languages.
Laos however didn't entirely abandon French,as parts of the country still use French.

Is Burkina Faso an homogeneous country? I don't understand what they mean by "the establishment of national languages as official languages in place of French". What is the language? This news report didn't even state the particular language to be adopted in place of French.

Imagine all those incoherent rubbish Tinubu was saying at the COP28 in Dubai. Would it not have been less embarrassing if he was speaking in Yoruba. -at least we would be the only ones hearing the mumbo jumbo, we would trust the interpreter to help cover our shame.

Right time for Africans to begin to derobe from colonial garbs.

Abandoned and embrace what ? One language? No. The idea of languages? Yes.
Something along the lines of having the one tribe at the helm of affairs speak their mother tongues huh? Then if another tribe finds themselves in the corridors of power he's more than allowed to flip the switch?

How's that even possible because Burkina Faso has more than 60 indigenous languages...

what significant improvement does Nigeria have despite its strong relationship with the US and UK
Our military is still in jeopardy, governance is terrible, economy is in shambles, our health care system is terrible, transportation network is still struggling, human capital development is nowhere to be found, the only thing we learn from them is thei nonsense culture and wokeness

So therefore this is a welcome development in Burkina Faso 🇧🇫, imagine being told your mother language is not allowed to be spoken in Nigerian secondary schools, how pathetic

I will really want you to list five solid improvements the US or UK has brought to Nigeria, I will wait

That's wonderful!

Nigeria should toe the same path with each region having their national languages with English as optional foreign language.

Dumb folks!
So which language will be their lingua franca?

Africa, especially West Africa countries has many languages each. I hour drive from one place to another and you meet a completely new language.

What French and English language has done is to make communication easy. Example, Nigeria has more than 100 languages. Without English, I have to learn more than 100 languages to communicate with different people all over Nigeria.
