Igbos Are On A Rebound, Don’t Allow Biafra To Stop The Momentum by SSFeedsNigeria: 10:26am On Dec 09, 2023
I once saw data from the 1960’s that showed how the old Eastern region (comprising the entire SE with Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River) was the fastest growing economy in Nigeria, and among the fastest in the world. The region was registering new businesses far more than Western and northern regions combined! Then the civil war happened in 1967-70 and that momentum was lost. The region turned into a sorry state. New centers of growth and investments shifted to Lagos/Oyo and Kano/Kaduna axis.

Infrastructure in the East decayed. Investments fled the region. Even Igbos themselves abandoned their region and instead chose to invest in the new centers of growth outside their region. Onitsha deterioted. Aba decayed. Enugu, Owerri, Nnewi, Awka, Umuahia, Abakilike etc. became glorified villages. People looked down on those that choose to remain in the East as unambitious people who don’t want to make it big in life.

From the 1980’s, 1990’s and up to early 2000’s there were constant religious riots in the North, and each time it occurred, Igbos and their investments became targets. As a result, calls for “aku ruo ulo” which loosely means “bring your investments home” became rife but unfortunately, the East was still in a very bad shape. This pushed Igbos to start making demands from their governors on infrastructure improvements. Having realized that North was no longer safe for them and their investments, Igbos began to move massively into Lagos & Abuja in the interim, along with their investments. Not long after, the aku ruo ulo calls began to yield dividends as Igbo investments began to trickle into their region.

As Igbo population & assets in Lagos spiked, Yorubas began to get uncomfortable. Then 2023 election happened & they weaponized tribalism. Several Igbo dominated markets got burnt. It was followed by the demolition of houses and plazas in Igbo dominated areas too. Just like North in the previous years, Igbos also realized that Lagos isn’t safe for them and their investments too.

Almost same situation that occurred in the North in the years prior to 2000, is now occurring in the West. The period Igbos began to abandon North coincided with its economic collapse. I’m not saying that North collapsed economically because Igbos abandoned it but several other factors added to it.

Now, calls for Igbos to divest away from Lagos region is happening at a period foreign investors are also abandoning the region. Lagos/SW loss now becomes SE gain as investments are now pouring into the East in an unprecedented manner. What makes it more remarkable is that SE is rising when other regions are stagnating or even regressing.

Just like in the 1960’s when the civil war truncated the rise of the East, Igbos should avoid history repeating itself. You can make IPOB or ESN your pressure group but never escalate things to unmanageable crises level.

Another good thing is that Nigeria is finally being restructured without many being aware. The North may or may not be aware that Nigeria is being restructured against their age long hindrance to it. However, there is little or nothing they can do to stop it. Fuel subsidy removal, unbundling of power generation and distribution, removal of certain things from the exclusive list etc are restructuring that will make regions grow at their own pace. This is the opportunity Igbos need to roar back like the Asian Tigers and it is gratifying to note that the prognosis indicate positive signs. Aba, Onitsha and Nnewi are back on track. SME’s and manufacturing in the SE is thriving once again.

Unfortunately for the northern region, they failed to invest in Human Resources. If Tinubu sustains the covert restructuring, the region is likely to collapse further without new investments and rising insecurity. With foreign investors also fleeing Lagos region & Igbos doing same, the SE is now poised to become the new axis of growth in Nigeria. Also, with AFTCA now in place, Lagos no longer has locational advantage like in the past, when ECOWAS was the trading region. Now, the entire Africa is, and SE is well positioned between West and Central Africa.

Igbos can truly achieve their mission even within a dysfunctional BUT DECENTRALIZED Nigeria.

Ekpa bingos are too myopic to understand what you just wrote ..

They hardly reason ..and too daft to understand the Nigeria market.. and economy , and what advantage the have in it ..

They dream of a “ utopia Baifra” grin .. while George Orwell Animal farm is already happening in their east.

Obi already made an intrusion on Nigeria politics.. instead to sustain the tempo.. and build on what political fortune and good will from other Nigerian ethnicities that has come to trust them with their votes .. they went back shouting Biafra ..
They hardly understand that the word Biafra is why no ethnic group trust them with power ?
In their ekpa bingoish brain .. they believe every other tribe wan to secede .. that’s the hallucinations that has kept them blinded from seeing .. that they reality they seek in Biafra .. is what they can easily live in Nigeria

Real Hardworking igbos must unite to make igboland a beehive of economic activities.. plus seaport minus seaport .
North no get seaport .. but still feed Nigeria .. and their market always finds it way to four corners of the country and outside .

Biafra under this present wannabes will only destroy and reck igboland .
They always listen to taunts and troll from southwest.. and act accordingly how the Yoruba of southwest dictates .. yet believe they’re wise .. when the Yoruba and north dictate their pace and actions .

LATEST data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), showed that only five states generated $1.03 billion as capital importation for Nigeria in the second quarter of 2023.

Compared with the first quarter of $1.13 billion, the amount decreased by 9.04 per cent. It is also 32.9 per cent lower than the $1.53 billion generated in Q2 2022.

Federal Capital Territory (Abuja), Akwa-Ibom, Ekiti, Lagos and Ogun state are the five states. For the record, 32 states did not generate capital importation between April and June 2023.

Lagos State remained the top destination in Q2 2023 with $778.06 million, accounting for 75.52 per cent of total capital, followed by Abuja (FCT), with $194.28 million (18.86 per cent).

Akwa-Ibom State had $33.86 million (3.29 per cent), Ogun State $24.00 million (2.33 per cent) and Ekiti State $0.01 million.

The ICIR reported that 28 states had no capital importation in the first quarter of 2023.

Though we know that Nigeria project is faulty and a failed one, but these brainless Biafra agitators, especially Mr groundnut camp must not drag igbos into an unwinnable war, that will further depreciate the present little fortunes of the Igbo nation.
if there is going to be any serious crisis or an implosion in Nigeria, it must not start from the east, pls igbos must allow Nigeria to sort herself out, from any implosion because it seems like the only thing that unite other Nigerians apart from sports, is castigating and fighting against the igbos to console themselves from their present precarious situation of things in Nigeria, due to bad leadership, which some people willfully supported to spite the igbos.
let all enjoy the system, either good or bad, but no more useless and wasteful Biafra war.

Hope you’re not buying into any of their blatant attempts at massaging the ego of Ndigbo! It’s all deceptive and aimed at trying to ‘pacify’ those ‘noisy neighbours’ on the east of the Niger so they can enjoy their stolen mandate in peace! They’re just playing on the intelligence of Ndigbo!

Any Igbo or other ethnicities in the east that underestimates the willingness and capacity for Tinubu and his covetous mob to corner a disproportionate amount of Nigerias’ commonwealth and political/economic opportunities to his region, even more than Buhari did during his tenure, such a naive person is in for a rude awakening! All Tinubu needs is some measure of stability in the country….and he’s good to go!

Chinua Achebe also talked about how other Nigerians have Igbophobia. It’s something even foreigners too observed. But we must never allow our heads to be used in breaking coconuts again.

The north is imploding. The SW is in a quandary. SS has realized that oil era is almost gone and they didn’t achieve greatness with it. In all these, Igbos still have some of the best prospects going forward. Abundance of Human Resources and vast gas resources. Two vital ingredients for the future.

We should still keep a sort of militia to help stave off spill over from north’s implosion and expected terrorism it will cause for other regions down South. Also, Igbos must bring their investments to the East, it’s very important so they can reduce their vulnerability in Nigeria.

@OP, thanks for an EXCELLENT post.
I never even saw it, but all the points you raised in the bolded are actually true.
Maybe this Jagaban of a guy has a plan after all. grin

Thats how unity beggars who want to protect their useless 'one Nigeria' like to talk

Stop being silly and be realistic for once.
Is there anywhere in this world where Igbo independence is been discussed?
I mean from Igboland to Abuja and international community.

What you wrote is nonsensical by advising Igbos as if it is Igbos that are causing the insecurity in Southeast or it was Igbos that caused the 1967 civil war. Igbos are incapacitated to prevent both the 1967 pogrom and the recent insecurity from happening. The reason for the insecurity is detention of Kanu and killing of his apostles who later took up arms to make life uncomfortable for others who aren't part of them. Igbos have no capacity to stop them except Government arms the ordinary people to fight them or settles with them without involving Igbos.
