1. Rashidi Yekini (1993) The first Nigerian to ever win the African Player of the Year was the late Super Eagles striker Rahidi Yekini. Yekini beat Abedi Pele of Ghana to win the award in 1993 following a heroic campaign in Portugal with Vitoria de Setubal, where he led the club to promotion with 34 goals. He also starred for Nigeria at the international level, playing a pivotal role in their first-ever World Cup qualification. 2. Emmanuel Amunike (1994) Yekini was dethroned the following year by compatriot and 1994 AFCON star Emmanuel Amuneke. The skilful and tricky winger claimed the award ahead of Liberia's George Weah and Super Eagles teammate Daniel Amokachi, as reported by OJB Sports. Amunike enjoyed an outstanding year in the Portuguese league with Sporting CP while also shining at the AFCON 94 and the World Cup in the USA. 14 Likes 1 Share

3. Nwankwo Kanu (1996, 1999) Arguably, the most successful Nigerian player. Nwankwo Kanu won the African Player of the Year award twice, first in 1996 and second in 1999. His first came after leading Nigeria's Olympic team to the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Kanu mesmerised Brazil in the semi-final, where he netted a brace as Nigeria defeated the South American giants. He also had a stellar campaign in Serie A with Inter Milan. Despite his success in 1996, Kanu was diagnosed with a heart problem which slowed his career. However, the lanky forward saw a renaissance in career after a move to England, where he joined Arsenal. His performances in 1999 saw him reclaim the Player of the Year award for a second time. 4. Victor Ikpeba (1997) In between Kanu's successes was another Nigerian, Victor Ikpeba, who won the award in 1997. Affectionately known as the Prince of Monaco, the then AS Monaco star had an outstanding year with the French giants. Ikpeba netted 13 times to help Monaco win Ligue 1 and also finished second in the goal scorers chart for the 1997 UEFA Cup. He also featured prominently as the Super Eagles qualified for the 1998 World Cup. 17 Likes 2 Shares

5. Victor Osimhen becomes the 5th Nigerian to win the African footballer of the year award. Victor Osimhen, Super Eagles striker, has been crowned 2023 CAF men’s ‘Player of the Year.’ The 24-year-old was announced the winner of the gong at the gala held in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Monday. Osimhen garnered the highest votes to defeat Egypt’s Mohammed Salah and Achraf Hakimi of Morroco to win the coveted individual prize for male African footballers. The Napoli striker became the first Nigerian to win the CAF men’s Player of the Year since Nwankwo Kanu in 1999. Osimhen had a laurel-laden 2023, which started with leading Napoli to the club’s first Italian Serie A title in 30 years. The Eagles striker scored 25 league goals to become the league’s highest goalscorer, setting the record as the first African footballer to achieve the feat. He was also instrumental for Nigeria during the AFCON 2024 qualification campaign and was the top goalscorer in the series with ten goals. Osimhen was named the eighth best male footballer in the world at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in October. He finished higher than any other Africans on the list. He also became the first Nigerian to be named in the top ten of the Ballon d’Or. He recently won the Italian Footballers’ Association (IFA) Player of the Year award for the 2022/23 season, in which he was the highest goalscorer in the league with 25 goals. Osimhen joins the illustrious list of male Nigerian footballers who have men named the best players on the continent. The list includes Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amunike, Victor Ikpeba and Kanu, who won the prize twice. Ok Meanwhile those miscreants spreading lies against Emmanuel Amunike should desist forthwith with such malicious falsehood...Amunike was never amongst the voting members of the coveted CAF footballer of the year title, so there is no way he could have voted Salah. 2 Likes |

eole:Please ignore him. victorclean:You brought in tribalism to derail this thread and it's unfortunate. While your forbears were imposing laws to ban unclothedness in your region, Yorubaland already has Africa's first football stadium and modern football teams. It's not good to be loud, proud and arrogant to anyone let alone to the Yoruba people who are far ahead of you and your folks by all standards. 19 Likes 9 Shares
