Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti of Labour Party (LP) has concluded plans to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).


A close associate of Otti who is also a member of the National Working Committee of the APC made the revelation on Monday adding that preparations are underway to ensure that the party accommodates Otti and all his supporters.

In March 2023, Otti was declared winner of the governorship election in Abia after he polled 175,466 votes to defeat Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 88,529 votes.

His victory was however challenged by the candidate of the PDP, Chief Okey Ahiwe, and his counterpart in the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Ikechi Emenike, who came third separately.


In January , Supreme Court dismissed the appeals against Otti and upheld his election as the Governor of Abia State.

An undisclosed source in Abia State Government House who confirmed the planned defection said the need for the state to align with the government in centre necessitated the defection

According to the source, “ the governor is passionate about Abia and has the intention to increase the infrastructural status of the state.

“To achieve this feat and achieve his dreams for Abia, he needs a strong partnership with several national and international institutions. He is not leaving the Labour Party to despise anyone but he is doing it for the greater development of Abia state”


It will be recalled that the National Chairman of the APC, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje recently disclosed decision of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration to pursue the political liberation of the South East Geopolitical zone using the instrumentality of the party.

According to Ganduje, “ The President has approved the political emancipation, he has approved the political de-marginalisation of the South-east.“


Lending his voice to the political development in the South East , Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma said the APC is primed to dominate the zone and so become the vehicle for that liberation

According to him , “ It is important that APC as a political party to become the vehicle for the South-east region to be fully integrated into the national project, that is the Nigerian project so we are determined in our region to be part and parcel of the Nigerian politics.

“Consistent to that we are going to do our best to make sure that the five states in the South-eastern region are dominated by APC by endearing our party to the people of the South-east region”
