Almost 2 Billion People Watched AFCON 2023 - BBC News by Catapault: 10:23am On Feb 14
This year's Africa Cup of Nations enjoyed the highest viewing numbers in its 67-year history - thanks to bigger broadcasting and commercial deals, and social media buzz. Almost two billion people are said to have watched worldwide.

Analysts hope the global appreciation for Africa's footballing flair will translate into more starting slots for African teams at future World Cups.

As it stands, Africa has only nine World Cup spots to Europe's 13, despite the fact these two continents have a near-identical number of Fifa-affiliated countries.

African national teams have in the past complained their salaries and bonuses have not been paid.

This year’s African Cup of Nations saw by far its highest ever viewership numbers worldwide.

According to the BBC, an incredible 2 BILLION PEOPLE worldwide watched AFCON.

That equates to roughly 1 in 3 people on Earth watching the tournament!

It is envisaged that next year’s AFCON in Morocco will draw even higher viewership numbers, as the prestigious 65 year old African tournament continues to captivate audiences around the world.

The tournament is every two years and there are over 50 countries in the continent.

In the spirit of equity, are you supposed to clamour for another hosting now?

In fact I’m just tired of all of you in this country.

Very useless set of people!

We have hosted it twice before. We have also hosted a youth World Cup, Nigeria 99.

Let’s improve our infrastructure first, boost our megawatt, improve our rails, fix our roads, improve security, so when visitors come, they experience organic beauty. You also don’t want lights going off during matches or some bunch of foreigners getting kidnapped.

If we just do gra gra, host, build white elephant stadiums, etc, will be waste of money and won’t benefit Nigeria.

We don’t want to waste billions building stadiums, only for the stadiums to go moribund after 5 weeks of usage.

Nigeria can only bring down the quality of the tournament if caf makes the mistake of giving it to Nigeria, the country is just backwards in every sphere.

They watched us fail to lift the trophy... the painful thing about this final was the promise the players made to us that they will bring the cup home ...but can we really blame them? APC has been promising us one naira to one dollar since 2014

It was the best organized sporting event aside the world cup in S A I have ever seen on African soil. It shows you how other African countries has left us behind while we are busy playing politics. It would have been a sham of an event if it was Nigeria that organized it because one assshole would have seen it as an opportunity to get rich quick and not as a thing of pride for the entire country

More reason why I am always angry anytime I realize how terrible Nigeria performed in the final with their bus parking zero midfield techniques.

I'm sure na because Nigerians increase the hype of the tournaments due to our unnecessary bantering of other opposing countries on social media; thereby increasing the views of the tournament. No use Nigerians and social media play.

A great event. In comparison, this is more than the American Superbowl, NBA, and even the just concluded Asian Cup.

AFCON showed the world that we can organize great sporting events. The only problem I have was with the finals. Our fans were clearly denied tickets or sold to at exhorbitant prices.

Virtually everywhere one looked at in the stadium was covered with orange jerseys.

Well, kudos to the Ivoriens.

Even at that, some of the 50 countries can't host...Sudan, Eritrea, Libya, South Sudan, CAR, Somalia, Chad etc.
