tunjilana: I prefer they keep the senate. Every state should have equal representation in the house. Besides, the senate has fewer reps than the HoR. |

bentenny:We worry too much on minors. There are always checks and balances in everything. Even in the US,where there are checks and balances the police is still averse to the blacks. If our security challenges is addressed up to 75%. It is more important than what the state government does to one person. His opponent or his party. |

That's if the politicians themselves will allow the police to do their work.. If the current NPF are allowed to do their job without any interference we will not be where we are today. 1 Like |

Watch how arrogant Governors would mismanage this state police of a thing. It's like empowering the Governors to have cult groups. Imagine someone like WIKE having a state police.. Come and witness rigging of elections now. We are just evolving humans.! I have said it countless times that the problem of Nigeria is LAWLESSNESS. We have good laws but implementation is zero. No one is ruthlessly dealt with. A region would be more comfortable protecting their own national thief than bringing him out for public executioning. Imagine if we still had public firing squad..and you wanna tell me this madness across Nigeria will persist.... Hell Nooooo |

Emman08:no. It’s the federal constitution that is being repelled here. Even after this, it has to go to the senate and pass , then it is signed into law. |

TimeManager:This is just a bitter truth. Some surgeries require no anesthesia since it could be fatal on us getting operated on. They will have to bear the pains in order to live a while longer. During the surger, the patient will wail and wail. Later he will be the one using his mouth to appraise the surgeon 1 Like |

SoNature: The meaning of a republic entails the existence of the two houses. They are not there for decoration. The states have members of the house of representatives according to their populations while every state has equal numbers of senators to balance it out. That's the meaning of a republic. 1 Like |

State Policing is the way.. Any governor now that fails to secure his/her State would be held responsible and forced out of office. No more oga at the top in Abuja issuing order to release kidnappers. We'll see how the ones that release killers after swearing with quran will fair. |
Re: State Police: House Of Representatives Passes Bill For Second Reading by Obviouslyblunt: 3:54pm On Feb 20 |
Paraman:true. Different state assemblies must sit and debate before signing it into law in their states. This is a process that if successful might take up to 4 years to really implement nationally. |

oluwaseyi0: I once suggested the idea that some states with financial challenges can creatively embark on a policing program for their existing staff, where people interested can give three days to their normal office work and two days to doing police work with additional benefits eg. Hazard allowances etc. In this way those who find sleeping in office too boring can decide to use their two days for active patrols or some other policing work. With regards to the fears about abuse, their are always ways to enforce checks and balances. The State Police can either be answerable to a neutral Judiciary and council of traditional rulers. OR, you reduce or remove the Governor's immunity while also giving the opposition some veto powers to charge the Governor to court with credible evidence if they see a clear case of abuse. Their are many other potential options a State can take to enforce checks and balances. Concerning aggregating a region's resources to fund the policing..,, It could be workable in entirely or mostly homogeneous region's like,e the SW or SE. The North Central as it is today is not homogeneous and deserves to be divided into two or three different regions like Central West (Niger, Kogi etc) with areas consisting of similar cultures can pool together and areas like the Mid-Central ( Plateau, Benue, Christian parts of Southern Kaduna and Nassarawa) and Central East (Taraba, etc.,) can pool their policing resources together. I mention this because making this regional affair as inherited from the archaic and outdated colonial notions of what regions are (while may help large homogeneous areas) sadly, will only embolden places like Kaduna, and other core Muslim states to double down on using their so called repented and converted Boko Haram and Fulani Herder Terrorist to eliminate and wipe out large indigenous Christian populations who are unable to defend themselves even within a state policing construct. The eventual pogroms could make something like the Armenian genocide child's play as a result if the divergent indigenous areas are not enabled to also enforce their self-determination and policing. 1 Like |

Obviouslyblunt:It can be done in less than a year if the state assemblies do not delay the bills. with the governors in support of state police, I don't see the state house of assemblies delaying the bill. |

oglalasioux: Thank you for the lecture, but those who gave us the definition of republic with bicameral houses should also give us the money for running it. Perhaps since Nigeria is a republic, states should also have two houses. Let me be clear, as far government is concerned, there's no one-fits-it-all rule in it. Every serious country fine-tunes governance to fit into its reality. In other words, we must not implement everything we learnt in government textbooks. Sometimes, there's a huge disparity between book knowledge and reality. 2 Likes |

Re: State Police: House Of Representatives Passes Bill For Second Reading by Obviouslyblunt: 4:09pm On Feb 20 |
Paraman:I highly doubt this. Money has to be made available for this, so a new bill will state policing provision must be made. These men will be trained. States will deliberate on how to protect employment. With how Nigeria is, I don’t see this being done in 2 years. |

ArewaNightmare: Bro see the bigger picture first. State policing is long overdue, it might not be perfect and might also not bring a lasting solution to the security issues bedeviling this country, but will go a long way in curtailing it. We can always checkmate any foolish governor that wants to take advantage of this. Anything to checkmate this surge in kidnapping is fine biko. |
