Anyway, there would have been nothing strange or wrong if the NTA had asked to interview him in Hausa. Some people on that thread acted as if the NTA had just a single channel. The NTA has numerous channels, including language channels and Nigerian languages are also spoken on some of their state stations.

Broadcasters often do multiple interviews with a guest once they've gotten him. A guest could do an interview in English and Hausa at one sitting.

Is Gowon an Hausa man? Why should a Lau man from Plateau state in the middle belt speak Hausa?

Hmm. The reason looks valid.
But you never mentioned that the broadcast was cut off

Why stopping the transmission suddenly? If he was to do the review in both Hausa and English languages he would've been informed beforehand and not while on air.

Gowon reminding rebel ECOWAS HoS the importance of ECOWAS.
It's like Gowon still lives in the ECOWAS formation years.

Are those rebel ECOWAS HoS fools? Don't they know Gowon's history as one tine Nigeria's HoS?
Don't they know Gowon as the HoS whose indecisive foolishness on Aburi Accord plunged his country, Nigeria, into a three years civil war which resulted into the greatest genocide after the Holocaust?

Wonder why Gowon believes that these rebel ECOWAS HoS don't read his history; and would listen to him whether he spoke to them in Hausa or in English language.

You have know idea how much I am enjoying this thread.

The people that attacked the NTA and the Nigerian Government (creating all kinds of ridiculous conspiracy theories and acronymns) are desperately trying to deflect and turn attention away from the fact that it wasn't the NTA or the Nigerian Government that asked Gowon to speak Hausa.

It's very entertaining.

“It wasn’t the NTA or the Nigerian Government that asked Gowon to speak Hausa”…

Who stopped the programme then? Did the ECOWAS Mc abruptly stopped the interview and programme? If he didn’t, who did then? Who gave instructions to stop him at that point if the NTA and the Nigerian Government were not part of it?

The northern farmers should continue smuggling food to thier brothers Niger. It is so sad to know that Gowons visit was all the ECOWAS sanctions on the junta government in Niger, Mali & Burkina Faso..There would be no coup in Nigeria and president tinubu will succeed inshallah

For the woke generations that lack history education. General Gowon is among the founding fathers of ECOWAS and he is just on an assignment to discuss issues with the chairman of ECOWAS. He was not used to start a propaganda. Stop using SM to fill your heads with lies. Use your bandwidth wisely or least play online games to guide your sanity.

We move!

Of what importance or purpose will continuing watching the program be to the viewers of NTA with the confusion at that stage? NTA did nothing wrong stopping the program. That is the ethics of broadcasting.

He was asked to speak in hausa and he refused, d way people carried d news was wrong... They were like NTA asked him to speak in hausa and after he refused he was cut off... From d video it wasn't even NTA correspondence or journalist dat asked for a translation in hausa...

This is quite strange

Why are they trying to prevail upon him to speak a language he says he no longer has a solid grasp of? That's the thing about the media. They'll be happy if he goes ahead and makes a total blunder.

Kudos to the general for standing his ground.

He has a grasp of it, always know what elders are saying because they don't say it. His refusal is a pregnant statement, time shall reveal

Just imagine what you are defending .That's General NTA and not NTA Hausa and Evil Gowon and the NTA media crew should have done their prep on him before coming on live to keep insisting he speaks Hausa. Is Ecowas for Hausa ppl alone if we are to go by your lame narrative? Why are you shameless and everywhere?

To them MB ppl who allowed sojourners overthrow them to the point of you adopting their language, you are soaked in foolishness.

To Gowon, it is good that you are alive to witness the growth of the region you wanted to annihilate, you didn't know we were seeds but your ppl are being wiped out and all your strength has failed you.You suddenly don't speak Hausa anymore.Where did it go to?

I think it is you that is just hell bent on being unreasonable, despite the explanation made, which surprisingly add up cos we didnt see that angle
Some countries are threatening to leave ecowas, these countries speak hausa largely which you can go verify, hence why the anchor was pushing for Gowon to speak hausa so as to reach a wider audience

However i don't see why netizens are even making these an issue, Is Gowon not an hausa and shouldnt he be proud to speak is language, and as a matter of fact Hausa is the most widely spoken language in africa but, slavery mentality is why people like you feel so subservient to "English" if you don't speak english you feel like a worthless being

Communication needs to be meaningful to be effective, but your post lacks any meaning at all.
My friend stop trying to defend rubbish. That program was on NTA NOT NTA Hausa and the man is wiser than even you with all the rubbish u wrote trying to defend stupidity exhibited by the NTA. If the man doesn't want to speak a native language but chose to speak his lingua franca who are u to defend NTA misdemeanours of cutting a live show by an ex president. We know una. There was a report yesterday that the NTA asked General Gowon to speak in Hausa. I'll quote it.

This is not true. What actually happened?

General Gowon visited President Tinubu and after meeting with the president, he spoke to journalists and said something interesting.

He said that a report had circulated that Ecowas asked him to give a press conference about the situation in the subregion but he refused. He said that the report was not true. He said that there was some miscommunication, but that he was going to do the press conference that evening. Here is a video of Gowon's visit to Tinubu and his statement after the visit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jJiQHJhbpU?si=OEUys95iRA97Hiyx

The reason that General Gowon was asked to do the press conference is because he was one of the founding fathers of Ecowas.

General Gowon had the press conference at the Ecowas Headquarters and seated beside him was the president of the Ecowas Commission, Omar Touray.

The General read a letter that he wrote to heads of state in the subregion and he asked those that wanted to leave Ecowas to come back. He talked about their reasons for founding Ecowas, etc.

He then gave the letter to the president of the commission and asked him to give it to all the heads of state.

After giving the letter to Omar Touray, the MC asked General Gowon to translate it to Hausa. Hausa is the most widely spoken langauge in Niger Republic, one of the countries that wants to leave Ecowas. It is also spoken in Benin, Togo, Ghana and other countries in the region.

However, General Gowon said that he wasn't told that he would have to translate the letter to Hausa and that for 8 or 9 years he has only spoken English and that he can't remember how to speak it. Here is the full video.

It was the Ecowas MC that asked General Gowon to speak in Hausa, not the NTA.

Ecowas knows that Gowon used to speak Hausa, but they didn't know that he has stopped. Here is General Gowon giving an interview to BBC Hausa and he spoke in Hausa here:

My friend hausa is not a language in Ecowas. U either speak English or French. Why should he speak hausa. If Obasanjo wants to address Benin Republic on Ecowas platform will he speak yoruba because Benin people speak yoruba abegiii

Gowon is from one of the minority tribes in the North who has been tired of been labelled Hausa/fulani North. Telling him to speak Hausa brought back those bad memories. It just confirmed our held belief that the Idea of one North has been dead a long time ago

This is disgraceful of all these brutes that have no idea how proper behaviour looks like. Gen Gowon said it right: it's an ambush. You can't ask such a senior elder statesman to just do things on the spur if the moment.

I'm sure many who see him as a "Hausa man" from the indoctrination they received from their tribe will be shocked to learn he wasn't confident enough in his language skills to offer such drastic impromptu change of plans. Gowon only learned Hausa language in his teenage years (shock!)
