The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has condemned the coordinated and sustained targeting of journalists by the Israeli security forces in the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Idris, in a statement issued by his Special Assistant (Media), Rabiu Ibrahim, stressed that the action represented flagrant violations of press freedom and human rights.

Idris, according to Ibrahim, made the remarks in his speech at the Extraordinary Session of the Islamic Conference of Information Ministers with the theme: ‘Israeli Government’s Disinformation and Hostilities Against Journalists During the Israeli Occupation of Palestine’ held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, in Istanbul, Turkey.

Idris who was represented by the Head of Mission of the Nigerian Embassy in Turkey, Ambassador Zayyad Abdul-Salam, noted that since the beginning of the conflict, Journalists have been subjected to harassment, intimidation, violence, and even death simply for carrying out their duty to inform the public and uphold the principles of truth and justice.

According to Idris, “From the statistics provided by the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ), about 88 journalists and media workers were killed since the war began on October 7, 2023.

“As Ministers of Information representing member states of the Islamic Conference, it is incumbent upon us to condemn in the strongest terms these atrocities and censorship against journalists performing their legitimate duties in Palestine. We must stand firm in solidarity with our colleagues in the media who risk their lives daily to report the humanitarian crisis in Palestine under occupation and to give voice to the voiceless.”

Idris, however, called on his colleagues to always insist that the truth is upheld at all times by demanding a conducive atmosphere to enable the media to carry out their duties, denounced any attempt to distort the facts and whitewash the humanitarian situation in Palestine.

He advised the Ministers attending the conference to explore strategic communication, advocacy, and collaboration to amplify the voices of journalists who courageously document the human rights abuses and atrocities committed against the Palestinian people.

“At the heart of our response must be a commitment to upholding the principles of press freedom, freedom of expression, and the right to information. These fundamental human rights enshrined in international law constitute essential pillars of democracy and good governance. We cannot allow them to be trampled upon by those who seek to silence dissent and control the narrative,” Idris said.

The Minister further called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and emphasized Nigeria’s position on a two-state solution to address the crisis in Palestine, ensuring the rights and sovereignty of both Palestinian and Israeli peoples are respected and upheld.

Nigeria should be careful in this ISRAEL matter so as not to add to the confusion in the country. Nigeria already has so much disaters on its table.

What Journalists are you talking about? is the Hamas terrorists Journalists ? Or the so called doctors , UNRWA officials and so on who are Caught to be Terrorists and murderers, etc

The IDF acts with utmost precision, targeting Terrorists and taking Measures to avoid harm to Civilians who are really innocent like no army on earth does in a War.

We must remember that ISRAEL is not in a Party. ISRAEL is in a War for its Survival.

I Stand Fully with ISRAEL

Terrorist condemns Israel's right to defend itself. Lol

Some people are so daft, they put religion before common sense. I've been saying it since this war started. Hamas will be sorry for invading Israel and killing those people.

Most of these journalists are terrorists. The Nigeria minister of information is clueless, or he's talking rubbish because he's got the same religion as them. They're not journalists, they're Hamas mates or helpers who work together. Some of them joined in with Hamas on October 7 and knew all about the invasion, some of them even cheered when Hamas killed Jews.

I don't want to hear anyone speak because these TERRORISTS were happy when they did the invasion. They're getting what they deserve, and like I said, till the last one. No one, not even the whole Arab world or the Islamic countries association or whatever they call themselves(I don't get why Nigeria is in there when it's a secular country(theoretically) can stop ISRAEL.

No one gives a toss about their protests and moans, it won't stop the destruction of Hamas. South Africa must be tired. Victory is guaranteed!

Anyone who messes with Israel will end up dead. Just ask Hamas!

If Nigeria Christians are weak at this time, Israel is not weak and they will defend themselves till the very end of the world.
Funny enough, middle Easter Muslim never accept these as*slickers humans. If all middle east arab league are afraid to raise voice who are you?

These idiots need to shut up NOW!

Israel has allies that Nigeria depend on for foreign aid and business.
Sensible countries keep shut in these matters.

Nigeria and Nigerian politicians need to PRETEND to be sensible here.

Because if sanctions are placed on Nigeria in addition to Tinubu's economy, Nigerians will eat stones for bread.

How can you be defending yourself and you killed over 10,000 children and journalists? The funny thing is that they are oppressing and still crying victim. If you call that defense, you dont have senssee.

Mindless shelling of innocent civilians with zero achievement aside the annihilation of the Gaza populace. The only hostages they were able to free was done through a swap.
