The Kanu Heart Foun-dation (KHF) has dis-closed that Nigerians spent a whooping $300million for open heart surgeries in India in 2010.

To put an end to this anomaly and conserve the country’s hard-earned foreign exchange, the KHF has proposed the establishment of a cardiac centre in Abuja.

Addressing newsmen on the proposed fund raiser for the project which is slated for February 2012, the founder of KHF and former captain of the Super Eagles, Mr Kanu Nwankwo, said  the  plan to build the cardiac centre was in line with the aims and objectives of KHF.

He said the project, estimated to cost $35million or N5billion, would, upon completion, perform at least 250 open heart surgeries annually with free treatment for heart patients between the ages of 1-12 while adults would receive subsidised treatment.

To achieve the fund raiser objective, he said the foundation had appointed Messrs Red Sapphire, a leading marketing communications and events management company led by Ono Akpe.

“Presently, it costs  KHF five times more to send one child overseas for open heart surgery than if the surgery was performed here in Nigeria if the facilities were available,” Nwankwo declared.

He said since the inception of KHF in 2000, the foundation had spent $4.2million, an average of $10,000 per person for surgeries outside Nigeria.

Sending patients oversea is a waste of money and time. I think Nigeria need more than one cardiac centre.

This is a welcome development, since our various arms of government are not prepared to provide any basic health service

If Kanu had bagged GCON for this act alone, we'd applaud GEJ
But instead, he gave it to the monopolist.

this is good news in the sense that people are more conscious of the different diseases that are out there and they are taking care of the issue instead of thinking some demon is chasing them or having a pastor pray to cure heart disease

Well, its about time, this will encourage more Residency spaces and reduce Brain drain, its not just Cardiac surgeries, but kidney transplants, Cancer therapy and other specialised case managements. Our health system needs a rejuvenation. it needs a turn around. else it will crash, and i don't mean increasing doctors salaries, but improving healthcare, making it affordable and accessible and improving quality, customer care as well, eg get rid of fucking rude nurses and sue bad doctors, oops. i am one too

If you know of an indigent child that needs hole-in-heart surgery, please contact me before 29th November 2011. Rotary International (district 9125) is organizing a free-surgery camp in India.

Much as d idea to build a heart centre(which is d first time its bein mooted) is noble,no one shd b brandishing grandiose figures here:$300m~N450b. Heart surgeries on d average in india~N5m;so at this it wud mean 90,000 surgeries were performed in india in 2010 on nigerians alone;somebody definitely wants to Impress us with cooked up figures!
