If they explain Nigeria to you and you understand it, the person did not explain it well.

Nigeria defies all known economic laws.

It's basic Economics bro.
If a trader buys a commodity (maggi) at N1000 and sells at N1,150. If he heard that the company has now increased its selling price to N1,400 cos of the current exchange rate. If the trader doesn't increase his current price to N1,550 or thereabout, how can the trader now go back to the company and buy new stock?

The post is not about what triggered inflation. The post is about why traders will not reduce prices now.

Like seriously? He should have told you when the wares will be out of stock before ordering for fresh ones at the new rate? Honestly, I have been reading foolish comments but this particular one takes the crown. Are you aware this government owes you no explanation? Your president, gringory obi is your president and only he owes you any explanation.
That clueless, incompetent Asiwaju you are standing on his mandate and who's government is favouring your village people with reduced food price owes us an explanation, never believed that Buhari can be better than a first class graduate of accounting and economics

If you rational and not selfish, you don't have to be a trader to understand that it is unfair to ask traders to reduce prices now.

But it is fair and business to increase the price when of all their old stocks and sell it at high prices because of the said dollar?

That Is if naira stabilises that long. If it doesn't you won't see the effects, becuase sellers can sell products they bought at lower price for a higher price due to inflation but will not sell products they bought at a higher price at a lower price due to inflation. They must finish the stock first.

It is easier to increase prices of commodities than to lower their prices.

Retailers that have old stock sell with the rate that will enable them buy more from wholesalers who imported at high rate.

Also, retailers and importers who bought items after the fall of Dollar rate need to sell with the existing high rate because there is no guarantee that the current Dollar rate will either be stable or go lower.

The Dollar rate has to either remain stable or continually fall for many months before it becomes wise for traders to reduce prices. Traders may reduce prices now and Naira will fall to 3k next two months, making it difficult for the traders to raise capital by then.

Why should traders reduce price when government are incompetent and heavily taxing manufacturers and cost of energy has gone up especially diesel

I get tired when people keep using this excuse.

So there is nobody who is importing new goods at the current exchange rate of 1300+ to drive competition by lowering prices.

How long did the increase from 1200 to 1700 take to happen? Price has been crashing for the past 2 weeks now, isn't that enough time to sell up most of your stock wares.

Instead people are restocking goods at this new rate and still selling at the hiked prices, thieves!

Even NNPC has not reduced fuel price that is directly dependent on Dollar rate. This is because fuel imported or distributed at the old rate will be sold based on the old rate. This is a simple logic.

See this one!

Mr Rational!!

When prices increase, they don't wait for their old stock to finish they just raise the price immediately even with that old stock.

But when price comes down they will be waiting to sell off old stock.

Mr Rational, dey there dey mumu yasef.

Go into trade, wait for your old stock with low prices to finish before you use current high prices, check your purchasing power after selling the old stock.
