Philip Shaibu, deputy governor of Edo State, has been impeached by the House of Assembly.

The lawmakers removed Shaibu, who has been having a running battle with Governor Godwin Obaseki, on Monday morning.

Shaibu had refused to honour invitations extended to him by the seven-man panel which investigated allegations against him.

After his refusal, the panel led by Justice S.A. Omonua (rtd) wrote its report and recommended his removal, saying Shaibu declined the opportunity for defence.

At its sitting on Friday, Justice Omonua lamented the deputy governor’s absence.

“This is the position of the panel. The panel adjourned sitting to today (Friday) for the last time for the respondent to present its defence, and the respondent is still not before the panel,” he said.

Counsel to the former deputy governor, Professor Oladoyin Awoyale, SAN, had withdrawn from participating in the proceedings after the panel ruled against his motion.

Awoyale had urged the panel to comply with a Federal High Court, Abuja, that ordered the panel to show cause on why an interlocutory injunction to maintain status quo on the proceeding of the petition pending the determination of the case should not be granted to the plaintiff.

He, however, urged the panel to wait for the decision of the Federal High Court on the matter slated for April 8, 2024.

The impeachment of Philip Shaibu as Deputy Governor of Edo State didn’t come as a surprise.

Interestingly, his impeachment was an apolitical decision by the Edo State House of Assembly - PDP, LP, APC legislators all supported the impeachment. This further shows how grave his offenses were for political across political spectrum to have supported his impeachment.

You cannot continue to undermine your principal, publicly. Philip Shaibu was the most powerful and popular deputy governor in Nigeria, this shows the extent to which Governor Obaseki gave him free rein and also supported him. At some point he apologized to the governor but he still went about deriding the progress Edo has made, a Government he is an active part of.

For Philip Shaibu, I guess he stretched his luck, pushed too far, and miscalculated politically. He was fortunate to have a Governor that didn’t gag him in anyway, he was free to activate events and make things happen. He did took all that for granted.

Finally.
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, But the end thereof are the ways of death.

He found life following Oshiomole but death when he switched camp to Obaseki.

Full roforofo fight has started. Both the Governor and his estranged Deputy rode on the support of their political benefactor yet betrayed him. Now they are double crossing each other. If you sow betrayal, you will reap betrayal too. Reminds me of the one who betrayed the political party that brought him to limelight.

I have absolutely no pity for Shaibu though, he got exactly what he deserved. Looking at how he betrayed Oshiomhole, there is absolutely no way anyone will ever trust him enough with power. Obaseki has used and discarded him. He can’t go back to Oshiomhole. He’s now a political orphan with no value or usefulness. His political career is dead and buried.

Edo State House of Assembly members have impeached the deputy governor of Edo state , comrade Phillip Shaibu

The deputy governor was impeached after the house considered the report by the seven man judicial panel.

After a head count eighteen out of nineteen lawmakers voted in support of the impeachment with one voting against.

So no noise from the rule of law and no Godfatherism crew now.
Just wait until it's time to impeach Fubara, that's when the national news and social media will be inundated with noise about following the rule of law, Godfatherim, and other cacophony.
It's ok now to impeach anyone with lame excuses just because the guy dared to run for office which is his right.

I have said before that Nigerians don't care about doing what is right, what they care about is who is doing what. If this had been an APC affair, just imagine the level of noise that it would have generated on TV, Newspapers, and social media.
Hypocrites everywhere.

Obaseki is a terrible person. Someone fought tooth and nail for u during ur trying times by even disassociating himself totally from his godfather and this is how u paid him back. I know the worst will be done to u in the nearest future. Nothing last forever and u will be forgotten very soon.
