Teaching hospitals are higher ranked, they have more staffs, more specialists and more facilities. I have worked in both teaching hospitals and federal medical centers.

However, the federal medical centre in Owo is higher ranked than the stupid teaching hospital in Akure, Ondo state. It baffles me how a teaching hospital will be sending referrals to a federal medical center.

One is not greater or of more importance than the other. They are all of the same cadre.

They are all government-owned and manged with the sole responsibility of handling medical cases.

Like Federal Medical centers, Teaching hospitals are meant to cater for the needs of the general populace and are usually an extension of the Federal university where they are established. You would observe that all first generation universities that offer medicine have Teaching hospitals. In such instance, there is not a need for a Federal Medical center and most states with Teaching hospitals don't have one. Federal Medical center only come into the picture if a state doesn't have a Federal university or if the federal university in the state doesn't offer medicine. Both serve the same purpose and are of the same cadre; it's just that trainees don't get trained in a Federal Medical center. You would hardly come across a state that has both a Teaching hospital and a federal medical center. If one is greater than the other as insinuated, then each state should have both hospitals where one always takes a subordinate position.

I stand to be corrected though.

On balance it’s better to find a high quality private hospital with a good reputation in the Specialty you require.

I’m not talking about all these strange mushroom clinics that people open in converted bungalows and Call “hospital”. I mean a fully functional HOSPITAL with decent hygiene and facilities, thank you

I didn’t say to look for a specialist DOCTOR and I didn’t say to look for a SPECIALIST HOSPITAL, I said that if you are able to find a private hospital that is good with a particular SPECIALTY then it’s better to go there and receive proper care in a hygienic environment that is well-staffed with high quality equipment.
