As the article says, the gas companies are owed money by the government. To the tune of 1.3 billion dollars. Government also owes gencos 1.3 trillion naira or an additional 1.0 bn dollars.

Gas companies as a result are refusing to supply gas as a result

But cbn is there paying foreign debts yet they can't find money to pay off the gas company. Don't you think Nigeria is a crime scene with zombies roaming around guiding the killers

Why should everything be a rocket science in Nigeria when countries like Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Benin Republic and other countries including those that Nigeria supply power, enjoy uninterruptible power? You would have been considered smart if you had held your peace, now you remove every doubt about your level of intelligence.

Ghana and Cote D'Ivoire all have power companies that charge cost reflective tarrif.

In Cote D'Ivoire case, since 1993. And it shows

They can pay off the debt, but the problem is, they can't keep doing it. The discos have to make an adequate profit so that government doesn't keep on intervening to save their ass. Hence the need to have cost reflective tarrif.

Also we need to pay our foreign debts regularly, because if we default, as Argentina can tell you, IMF will lock us out of the global market.

Yet same government is still borrowing from the said IMF. Seems someone is holding the country hostage cos I don't see how we can survive this

All African countries end up borrowing from IMF because the prices of the resources we sell are always fluctuating. Meaning revenue for the year is never stable, so we borrow

Even the healthy ones like Egypt and South Africa

We can get out of this trap, but the palaver is hardship is there for a while before it gets better. For Nigeria it means total removal of all subsidies and allowing the market to be free and ramping up tax collection plus investing in manufacturing.

If Tinubu refuse to sack that incompetent power minister he will just bring down what's left of that sector

We need international experienced Graduate of electrical engineering to hold that sensitive position

Bro I've waited a year and I haven't seen any impact this government created in my life. Taking off all subsidy is like looking for elastic limit of Nigerians. It sounds more like suicide mission.

Stop giving licenses to companies to manage power distribution across regions. Instead, make it a state by state thing. Just like Lagos, every state should have its disco. That way, unbundling the tripodal power industry will be much easier in the future.
State by state might be tedious and chaotic, they should sell each six geo political zone to a foreign power companies like they did in the telecom sector,it will encourage healthy competition that will improve efficiency, but what the hell do government think will happen when they sold a power distribution company Eedc to emeka offor a politician businessman with no record of managing any industry

Here's my conclusion after reading this report:

Power supply (both generation, transmission and distribution) is not cheap. It is very expensive.

To guarantee stable power, government needs to spend more money and the consumers (Nigerians) also need to pay more money.

If this is the case during Jonathan's period, will you still be talking this way?

Tinubu recently signed a bill that empowers states to start generating power. Before now, it was on the exclusive list. Hope Uzodinma went to Egypt recently to woo energy companies in the country to come and invest in Imo State such that they can supply electricity to the state and its neighbours through a gas-fired power station deal.

Nigeria is gradually getting to a point where states will have to start generating, transmitting and distributing power. The licenses of the current discos will expire in five years. When it does, the FG through NERC will have to limit power dynamics to state levels and end the national grid hogwash because it's not working. That's if they genuinely want to stabilize electricity.

Why is Eko Distribution not in the list?

The people of Ibeju lekki are seriously shortchanged by ekedc.

Ekedc has not performed as others so should not be exempted.

All will be well with the poor in Nigeria. Since you guys brought band A,b etc, poor has never witness good power supply for living.

You removed fuel subsidy, they survived, inflation of good/foods, they are surviving it. You now brought the power to it that some cannot do without using it to work. Tailors, welder, engineers etc cannot work without power supply, you concentrated on rich people side because of revenue generation while the poor are dy!ng because you have closed their hope. the just God will judge you in all deeds you are doing to poor in this country.

Continue, they will surely survive it.

We all survived coro, we will survive this too

Sorry for barging in, but I think you too do not understand the situation. If the government pays the money they owe the discos, the discos won't be in debts (most government establishments don't pay electricity bills).

Bro no dey CAP this sh!t Always.
You can't charge people you don't give light. It's a business and not a charity foundation where we donate money for darkness.
You want to charge me cost reflective bill, but there is no meter in my compound, so I should also pay for meter?
You want to charge cost reflective bill but some areas has faulty transformer?
Now that they've been giving the go ahead to charge cost reflective bill base on their ability to provide maximum satisfaction customers why don't they use that effort to improve on their distribution networks instead of sending meaningless apologies.
Since they've reduce the light giving to users below band A what has been their improvement in service delivery to the so-called band A feeders?
Is it not a business? Why can't they get capital to improve distribution to 70% consumers and upgrade them to band A so they can charge cost reflective bills?
If they're not finding it easy to handle this stuff their license should be revoked
