Tinubu Calls For Sovereign National Conference by nduchucks: 3:04am On Nov 25, 2011
Last week Tinubu called For New Thinking To Resolve Indigene/settler Question, this week he calls for SNC. He spoilt everything by adding "Sovereign" to the national Conference because "sovereign" just rendered his suggestion unconstitutional, illegal, treasonous, and undemocratic. The only way I'd support a so-called national conference is if the participants in such a conference do not include a single former or current politician, including Tinubu.  They want to share the rest of the country among themselves. all of dem be onye ara.

Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has said only a Sovereign National Conference (SNC) would save the weakening pillars of Nigeria as a federal entity.

He spoke at the first Anthony Enahoro Memorial Lecture at the Benin Club, Benin City, Edo State, yesterday.

Represented by Ekiti State Deputy Governor Mrs Funmi Olayinka, Tinubu said: “I submit to you today that because of the multiple issues surrounding our skewed federalism and constitutional flaws, the Nigerian nation is weak.

“Unless we move to strengthen it through dialogue and equity, we will remain a nation in mere words.”

The ACN leader said fixing the national pillar would entail a robust people-driven debate, insisting that any artificial tinkering of the present constitution would fall short.

He said: “The 21-member Presidential Committee on the Review of Outstanding Constitutional Issues (PCROCI) recently set up by President Goodluck Jonathan falls short.

“It is a backdoor approach to the issue of national conference. In memory of Chief Enahoro we must convoke a national conference.  It would provide a platform to address our pressing concerns.”

He said it was ironic that Nigeria once a product of dialogue at independence now has leaders who avoid robust dialogue state policy.  But he stated that free and unfettered dialogue holds the key to Nigeria’s rebirth.

“The people ought to be consulted on the issue of subsidy.  We ought to have a referendum on the question, not only of oil subsidy but also on sovereign wealth fund as well as the proposed one-term of seven years proposed by President Goodluck Jonathan,” he said.

Tinubu said federalism as a development paradigm for a multi-national country was no mere labelling, adding that it assures both economic and political fairness.

“Our economic system is supposed to be open and fair.  But it is even more slanted and biased than the political system,” he told the audience.  “We do not operate a free and fair merit-based economy.  We operate a feudal economy, where those in power decide by the whim of the moment who becomes rich and who stays poor.”

He regretted, however, that the military’s over-centralisation had arrested growth and stunted development.

“This has not only stalled development, it has affected recurrent and capital expenditure.

“This fuels corruption at the centre and makes the system a mockery of development.

“It gives a winner-takes-all quality to the presidential election.  This is wrong.  That is why progressives have been calling for fiscal federalism,” Tinubu said

He is just making his usual populist statements that have no weight. Its all hot air.
A committee has been set up to review the constitution and it is being done in a clever way that will exclude his type from having any influence whatsoever.

It will blossom into a National Conference at some point IMHO, especially as GEJ himself has said it will expand over time to include representatives of the various ethnic nationalities; in that sense, therefore, Tinubu's harpless thrashing about is useful to popularising the end result of the review process.

My thinking of the sovereign National conference is that those who argue for it want the total outcome of such conference to be put up for approval in a referendum, thereby legalising (in real sense by the people) whatever decision that is reached. Am a supporter of the SNC as far as all the component units of the country are represented in equal propportion in all its discussion and vote process, to avoid handing victory or majority to those favored by the injustice of state creation. Aside: Anything favored by the likes of Tinubu should be handled with care and suspicion through every step of it, vigilance therefore is the key.

Truly, Sovereign National Conference is the out in Nigeria, if we're ready to solve all existing problems in Nigeria. But the challenge is that who are the real & true Nigerian to represent us. Is it politians & corrupt leaders who kill all the times to gain access to the corridor of power in order to embezle Nigeria money to satisfy his/her selfish motive & evil family of theres.

Only God will safe Nigerian in the Lion Den !!!

Our Leader are too wicked & do not care about the masses. Almighty God will surely reward them with painful chastenment (Amen).

i am afraid i must respectfully disagree with the logic of this assertion.
there is nothing unconstitutional, illegal, treasonous, and undemocratic about the call. it may not be wise and  indeed maybe foolish even but certainly NOT unconstitutional, illegal, treasonous, and undemocratic.
in the first instance it is constititutional to advocate changing or completely jettisoning the constitution perhaps you care to share the relevant portion of the constitution that prohibits such advocacy. perhaps you care to share any statute that forbids such a call.  how is it treasonous or undemocratic.
i think the use of all these words is rather bombastic and ill informed. treason is defined explicitly in our statutes to cover violent acts against the state or the assistance of foreign powers against the state. here a citizen is calling for a Discussion and even if such a discussion challenges the subsisting constitutional or sovereign order it is totally democratic and by no means treasonous as long as it does not entail violence.
all of that is about the nature
of the call. its substance is an entirely different matter and i shall reserve comment on that for now

IMO if we want a quick change in Nigeria SNC is the answer, lets trash it all out once and for all. Politicians may be corrupt but they have insight knowledge about Nigeria better than you and I. they've been there and they know the loop holes.

SNC of my type should involve all stake holders, politicians, perm secs, high kings, chiefs and emirs, labour leaders, leaders and reps from all national associations including students.

everyone of us have tasted the bitterness, we know what we want addressed.

the fundamental mistake made by Lugard and colonial maters still affects us today. In any constitution, there is a page for solemnization, that is declaring the intention of the people to come together. In Nigeria, we never declared or called ourselves to live together, we were forced together. therefore, there is no solemnization in Nigerian Constitution because we never agreed to come together.

These are the terms and conditions to be discussed at SNC and that still remain our basic problems. At the SNC, we shall be able to discuss system of government good for us, modes and method of leadership and rotation etc.

You may not like Tinubu but you don't come across as a man with how you call him illiterate. As a man, give Tinubu his dues even if you hate him. The man is far from illiterate. It is you who actually seem "illiterate" with your ignorance that is unforgiveable in this information age. Tinubu distinguished himself academically and professionally.  What some of you fail to understand is that many of those who lead us are actually well-educated and intelligent.

Tinubu was so bright, he actually used to teach fellow students accounting in the USA. FACE OF SUCCESS - The MAN BOLA TINUBU

On his arrival in the U.S. in 1975 and with the support of an ever-adoring mother, this courageous youth, faced with an unflinching zeal to succeed, took on such menial jobs as dishwashing, night-guard and cab-driving to see himself through the initial difficulties of school at the Richard Daley College, Chicago, Illinois. .

The brilliance of this young Nigerian showed in his ability to make the honours' list of Richard Daley College. He subsequently transferred to the Chicago State University, Illinois, graduating with honours in 1979 and earning a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration (Accounting and Management). During his first year in Chicago State University, young Bola was given the rare privilege to partly teach other students of his Faculty in remedial tutorial classes. Most of his colleagues and contemporaries at the university attributed their improved grades to his tutorial lectures.

Throughout his undergraduate years, young Bola was on the Dean's List and was honoured with the Outstanding Student's Award, the University Scholar's Award and the Certificate of Merit in Accounting and Finance. He was also awarded the prestigious Sumna cumlaude for scoring 3.54 out of possible 4.0 GP.

With his successful academic profile, young Bola contested and won his first political election as the President of the Accounting Society of the institution in his final year at the University. .

Upon graduation with honours and several awards, Bola Tinubu cut his professional teeth at the American-based Arthur Anderson, Deloitte Haskins and Sells (now called Deloitte Haskins and Touche) and GTE Service Corporation - the largest Communication and Utility Company in the United States of America. .

Meanwhile, at Deloitte Haskins and Sells, the young and professional Bola broadened his experience by participating in the auditing and management consultancy services of General Motors, First National Bank of Chicago, Procter and Gamble, International Harvester, GEC and other Fortune 500 firms. .

On his return to Nigeria and with his international experience in Financial Management, young Bola joined Mobil Producing Nigeria as a Senior Auditor before he retired as the company's Treasurer. As pragmatic, charitable, grassroots' person, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu saw communal service as a veritable tool for social development. He never hesitated to serve his community spearheading several financial contributions and fund-raising for community development programmes in Lagos State. He leads Primrose Group, a political action organization pushing for fundamental changes in the politics of Lagos State. .

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu opted fully for public service in exchange for his lucrative job at Mobil. His first foray into active politics was as a founding member of the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP). In 1992, he was elected as an Honourable Senator of the Federal Republic Nigeria to represent Lagos West Senatorial District. At the National Assembly, he distinguished himself as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Finance, Appropriation and Currency - a foremost committee of the Senate. .

Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu was born on 29 March 1952 in the city of Lagos. He attended St. John's Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos and Children's Home School in Ibadan. Tinubu went to the United States in 1975, where he studied first at Richard J. Daley College in Arthur Andersen, Deloitte,Chicago, Illinois and then at Chicago State University. He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Accounting.[1]

Tinubu worked for American companies Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, Haskins, & Sells, and GTE Services Corporation.[2] After returning to Nigeria in 1983 Bola Tunubu obtained work with Mobil Oil Nigeria, becoming an executive of the company

You people don tire me with unnecessary and unproductive emotionalism. Why must a call for dialogue be prefaced with the word sovereign? Why inflame the discussion by instigating conflicts with potential national security concerns by the unnecessary inclusion of the word “sovereign” in the conference?

Do we not have the NASS who is charged with enacting legislations and amending our constitution as needed? The democratic thing to do is to work within our constitution to achieve our goals.  In fact,  GEJ already has eminent Nigerians working on constitution review. This call for “sovereign” national conference, has historically been used by closet secessionists as a way of achieving their goal of dismantling our dear country.

The good news is that some of us will fight you secessionists until we blow you into smitherinees and run you off into the Atlantic if need be.  You are well advised to thread softly and let us make our young democracy work.  Sovereign national conference ko, constitutional convention after American style tea party ni.

Do they exhibit rascalism. Tinubu is among the vices we have in this country today.
