2012 Ondo Gubernatorial Election - OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS' ACTIVISM

Over the years, the Obafemi Awolowo University Student Union has become an integral part of Nigeria’s intellectual climate. It will be playing a historic role this saturday, 20th October when three of its former active members - Olusegun Mimiko, Olusola Oke and Rotimi Akeredolu - will be slugging it out with one another to determine who clinches the seat of governor of Ondo, the Sunshine State.
Considered in terms of age and political experience, the list is as follows: Olusegun Mimiko, Olusola Oke and Rotimi Akeredolu.
But what were their roles as students of Great Ife? For what activities were they known on campus? These questions are necessary because Great Ife students are never “intimidated by any intimidator.”
Dr Olusegun Mimiko was admitted into the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile-Ife, in 1972. In 1976, he bagged a B.sc in Health Science, earning the MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) in 1980. At Ife, like many other students of the university who are now making waves in different fields, he was a powerful Aluta machine. He was at various times a member of the Students’ Representatives Council (1975/76) and chairman of its Special Honours Committee. For a period in 1976, he was elected chairman of the council. Outside the union legislative house, Dr. Mimiko served on the University of Ife Students’ Union Electoral Commission (1976/77). He was the public relations officer of the International Students’ Association of the university between 1977 and 1978.
It was the then University of Ife that shaped Mimiko’s ideological leaning, preparation and maturation. He was a key member of notable pan-African Socialist Student Organisations on campus, particularly the famous ‘Wantu Wazuri,’ which group he served as the PRO. Mimiko was also a key player in the Nigerian Young Socialists Movement, which is not surprising since his father was an admirer of the Soviet Union and a hard core Awoist.
Although a medical student, Mimiko was said to have been so close to the humanities, that many often forgot that he was a medical student. It was said that he knew Wole Soyinka, Okot P’Bitek and many other great writers and critics who were part of the university’s highly charged intellectual climate by heart. He and his intellectual group were later to predict the fall of the Soviet Union.
It was in 1981 that Chief Olusola Oke, an accomplished politician and administrator, was admitted to the University of Ife to study law, bagging his degree in 1986, the same year he proceeded to the Nigerian Law School. He was also notable at the Faculty of Law as a student activist.
Akeredolu, for his part, was a very powerful ‘aluta machine’. He was elected Vice President of the students’union for the 1975/76 session. He obtained his LLB degree in 1977 and the B.L from the Nigerian Law School in 1978. Away from his university days, Akeredolu has been president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA); Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State (1997-1999).
He was also a member of the Ondo State Judicial Service Commission; member of the Council of Legal Education; member, Body of Benchers at the same time (1997-1999).

GREAT IFE brings out the greatness in you!!!

I knw law applicants who made the merit cut-off mark, 273 and have nt been admitted. Am one of them, merrygold, shewn starr, sly-brolin, am_sage, wolex16 and others. If u say we are nt many here, what cud have happened to the names of 5 or more applicants? Skipped or ommited? Whereas, nobody has testified that he has bn admitted or a frnd of his' has bn admitted, not even d applicant dat emerged 3rd in PUTME. Fingers crossed!
