gang of suspected armed robbers, on Wednesday night, besieged one of the homes of the late General Sani Abacha in the metropolitan area of Kano, shooting the last son of the departed ruler, Alhaji Al-Mustapha Abacha somewhere near his stomach. A police source told Daily Sun that apart from Al-Mustapha, other persons sustained injuries, adding that those injured have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital. Daily Sun was told that the shootout was sequel to the prompt response by Abacha’s bodyguards complimented by the resourcefulness of the police officers from the Nassarawa Police Division, whose office block is a stone -throw from the scene of the gun battle. The incident happened at about 6.30pm at one of the Abacha’s properties, located on Bank Road in Nassarawa area. Members of the Abacha family, especially Mohammed had, from time to time, quartered themselves in the brick-painted building as an alternative to the family house situated on Gidado Road. The five-member gang, it was gathered, came in a grey coloured End-of- Discussion Honda car and quietly made their way into the compound where they accosted Hajia Zainab Abacha, one of the daughters of the late General and demanded for money. It was learnt that Zainab had no immediate cash to dispense with and was in a fix trying to negotiate a way out when things suddenly went out of hand. The source told the Daily Sun that when the robbers took over the big house, they first arrested everybody within sight and seized all their handsets to ensure that none of them could contact the outside world. According to the source, unfortunately for the robbers just when they were certain that everybody was under check, the unexpected happened. They did not realize that not everybody in the building at that moment had been arrested. The source said that Al-Mustapha was actually in the kitchen, eating a light meal when the tragic scene began to unfold in the house. Hiding in the kitchen he secretly put a distress call across to his elder brother, Mohammed, but was caught in the act, a reason he was instantly shot. The source went further to state that Mohammed, on getting the message, quickly alerted their bodyguards as well as called in the police for help, leading to both teams storming the building within minutes. One of the robbers was arrested after he was shot twice in the leg as he made his escape from the troubled spot. The first shot came from the officers from Nassarawa Division while the second shot came from the bodyguards who gallantly defended their principal’s interest. Equally, some guns, were recovered from the robbers as they dropped everything on them and fled for their lives. The End-of- Discussion Honda Car used for the operation had been taken to the Bompai Headquarters of the Police Command. The state Police Commissioner, Mr. Ibrahim K Idris has visited the scene of the crime to make a personal assessment even as it was gathered that the arrested suspect has been cooperating in the investigation. State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Magaji Majiya confirmed the robbery attack on the Abachas and said that, the police responded quickly and positively, adding that the robbers did not take any property out of the house. He also said that investigation is in progress, even as he assured the people of the Kano State of the readiness of the Police command to secure life and property.

Was that an armed robbery or a "repossession"? Abacha's family should be made to prove ownership of the items repossessed from them, after all there is no honour amongst thieves.

I hope his son fully recovers.

In Nigeria there exists a complete lexicon of automobile names and part descriptions that are all unique and understandable ONLY to Nigerians.

As an example, "Mental and Main Boris" , translated from Nigerianese, refers to engine crankshaft bearing sets, which generally include both the MAIN, engine-block pair of bearings, and the bearing set for the piston connecting rods.

With this mind, can somebody please post a picture here to educate those of us who would not recognize an End Of Discussion Honda even if we were run over by one ?

Oh by the way, did Abacha's son die from his gunshot wound ? Enquiring minds want to know.

It has only been published by a couple of Nigeria's newspapers.

I wonder.

Why all this hate against the Abacha family?

Do you realise that Abacha's government was one of the most responsible and progressive and best performing governments in our history?

Iam personally not convinced that Abacha looted any money from Nigeria.

Obasanjo the biggest looter in African history probed Abacha blindly, for 10years so that we can be confused and deflect our focus about who really ruined Nigeria at that point in 1999 - Babangida.

After 10 years of probing Abacha, where is the money that Obasanjo said he recovered? What did he do with it?

Was the money discovered in foreign accounts actually placed there by Babangida, to help convince Nigeria that he had looted?

Obasanjo accused Abacha of having embezzled $6bn in the end they revised it down to $1.2bn yet say that he recovered $650m from foreign banks, but can not show evidence of where they have put the money.

All the people who have worked with Abacha, they have all said that they do not believe he looted.

If indeed Buhari actually also said Abacha never looted, then I am inclined to believe Buhari as he himself is a honest man and has no reason to be protecting Abacha.

We need to educate ourselves properly about our history, because all our news papers and media are owned by corrupt elite who are all spreading confusion and misinformation to the masses, to deflect attention from the trillions of Naira they have looted.

@Sagamite,
so you have no reasoned argument to make?

Are you not the person trying to convince us some time ago that Obasanjo was the greatest leader we ever had?

Between you and I it is not difficult to know who is more misinformed.

You need to visit my thread on Nigeria's history and pay attention to the Abacha era and then ask yourself what would prompt a blind probe of a government that had performed so well, other than pre-planned plot to assassinate his character after his assassination, to deflect attention from the really enemies of the state who had just stolen back power by poisoning Abacha.

Culled from article from Professor of Economics, Sam Aluko.

The 230 page Report of the Vision 2010 was submitted to Abacha in September, 1997. The Visioners consisted of 247 elite Nigerians, under the chairmanship of Chief (Dr.) Ernest Shonekan, the preceding head of state to General Abacha. The committee was assisted by 141 technical and secretariat staff, drawn from the Presidency, the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), federal ministries, the National Assembly, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the universities and the private sector. In addition, 29 Facilitators, 24 Resource persons, and 17 consultants, including foreign experts from Asia, Europe and America, participated in the Vision. The 247 members included the country's major emirs, obis, and obas, Christian and Muslim religious leaders, leading industrialists, commercialists, bankers and academicians, many of whom are now very prominent leaders in the ongoing Obasanjo reform administration. In its letter of transmission of the report to Abacha, the Visioners stated that, "The Report is the outcome of 12 plenary meetings, 57 around-the country meetings and workshops, 53 sub-committee meetings, field studies, and, thousands of memoranda from the public, including input from federal ministries, state governments, private sector institutions, Nigerians domiciled out of the country, and some foreigners who have interest in the welfare and livelihood of Nigeria". These foreigners are now called, "Development Partners" in the Obasanjo administration.

The Report proposed both immediate, short-term, medium term, and long-term measures to stimulate and grow the economy of Nigeria. The Committee rightly adumbrated that, "all of us, and not one single segment of the society or a single administration, could be strictly said to be responsible for our problems. The Committee then proceeded to ask, and answer, three questions about the country; viz: "Where we are, and why?" Where do we want to be?" And, "How do we get there", so that by 2010, Nigeria will be a democratic society, committed to making the basic needs of life affordable for everyone and creating Africa's leading economy?"

Unknown to many of the Visioners, the moving spirit behind the Vision was to elongate the rule of Abacha, because of his alleged achievements in government during 1993-1997. The achievements were said to include; the stablisation of the political terrain, after the annulment of the June 12, 1992 elections by General Babangida and the political upheavals that followed it, leading to the exit of General Babangida and the installation and the exit of the interim administration of Chief Ernest Shonekan: the stabilisation of the value of the naira and its stoppage from further devaluation; the increase in the country's foreign exchange reserves from $494 million dollars in 1993 to $9.6 billion by the middle of 1997; the improvement in the general standard of living of Nigerians during the regime; the establishment of the Petroleum Trust Fund and the improvement in the infrastructural services it occasioned; the caging of, and the reduction in the influences of the IMF/World Bank in the Nigerian economy, which reached its height during the regime of General Babangida; the prudent management of the annual budgets of the Federal Government; the reduction in the external debt of Nigeria from $36 billion in 1993 to $27 billion by 1997; improvement in the salaries and pensions of public servants; and the unprecedented provision of money for the settlement of internal debts which had been incurred by previous administrations but for which little or no provisions for their settlement had been made until the Abacha's regime. He was later adopted as the Presidential Candidate of the five main political parties for the 1998 election. He died in June, 1998!

You seem to have difficulty assimilating information.

First off, I said I doubted Abacha looted from Nigeria, doubted being the operative word here.

Do not forget he also had adventures in Sierra Leone and Liberia and may well have been handsomely personally rewarded for his intervention in the diamond rich country.

I said that even though it was reported that money was recovered from foreign banks, allegedly from a bank account belonging to Abacha, Obasanjo has not been able to demonstrate to Nigeria where this recovered money is.

There can be a number of reasons for this;

1) There was not any money recovered and press were delibrately fed with information that Foreign bank refunded the money.

2) The money was planted in the foreign account by Babangida, to add credence to their plot to frame Abacha, hence reason why money was never paid into treasury coffers.

3)The money was recovered but looted straight away

I think that scenario 1) is very probable as it is clear that Babangida /Obasanjo had set out to frame Abacha, otherwise they should not have had any reason to probe the one of the best performing governments (economically) in nigeria's histo

Some questions for you to ponder:
Why was it that when Swiss legal team came to Nigeria to collect evidence about the money that Obasanjo was saying Abacha had looted , nobody turned up to meet them and they had to return to Switzerland after 2days of waiting.

You are a cretin!

So the governments and judicial officials (judges and lawyers) that got involved in the cases in Switzerland, UK, Leichenstein and co risked their reputation, means of livelihoood  and were colluding with Nigerian officials to return (according to your daft reasoning) "fictional" money to blacken a dead man's name? What do you know about the Swiss legal process and the court cases Obasanjo started?

The lawyers use the evidence presented by Swiss Banks and Obasanjo (lets face it neither are non for their honesty and intefrity)

You need to stop being abusive, it takes away from any point you wish to make, as it indicates that you are not confident enough in your own position, to rely purely on the points you are making.

A bloody moronic conjecture-throwing MOORON!

So according to your DAFT reasoning, "The lawyers use the evidence presented by Swiss Banks and Obasanjo" and they won in court? Despite the top lawyers paid millions by the Abacha family to defend their loot. You think the Swizz court system in like Nigeria, fooooool.

What evidence do you have Abacha family were represented in court, other than information passed to the press by same Obasanjo and Swiss bankers?
