Fellow Nairalander,

Permit me to say the following already "supposedly" known facts:
1. Madam Iweahala is simply doing the bidding on her international collaborator - IMF/World bank, so don't expect anything different from her.
2. Ngozi is just helping the western / 1st world export inflation from the west to Nigeria. The west /1st world nations are known for leveraging on the chaotic conditions in the 3rd world nations. In other words, they use their instruments like IMF/World bank to unleash hardship on the 3rd world nations by using their agents like Madam Iweahala to implent their policies.
3. Take a look at all the "countries of interest" to the western world such as DRC, Angola, Nigeria, e.t.c; all are battling with one problem or the other.
4. No one can become a leader in any of these "countries of interest" without the strong support of either America, Britain or France. And when you ride on their support to get to power, they will use their agents within your country to make your government unpopular and get rid of you if you are lucky to escape death. This is the reason GEJ dances to their tune like mugu. He does not have the political will-power to challenge them or any of their institution. Any attempt to challenge them will cost him his job and if lucky, he will be alive.
5. As for Nigeria, they have a project to divide the nation and quarantine the South-south region which is their major interest. Their target is on or before 2015. To achieve this, they are using naija northern political elites who have hijacked the original course of Boko Haram to create state of anarchy in the Northern naija.
6. The greatest collaborator of CORRUPTION in naija are the western/1st world. They collabo with their agents in naija to perpetrate these wickedness at our own expense for their gains and that of their cronies. THAT'S WHY IT IS SO DIFFICULT TO EASILY FIGHT CORRUPTION IN NAIJA. The memories of the Halliburton and Siemens scandals still linger.
7. The most painful thing is that THE SO CALLED LABOUR, HUMAN-RIGHT GROUPS, CIVIL SOCIETY AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS, all know these facts but everyone turn blind eyes simply because they all benefit from these Western/1st world in one way or the other.
8. If GEJ needs the purported 1.3tr naira used on fuel subsidy, he should go to naija waters and fight corrupt practices going on there.

In the light of all these, Naija should watch and pray. May the ALMIGHTY GOD deliver naija from all the demons who have held her in bondage.

But is IMF a bad thing? all nations of Europe and America are doing their bidding. If you want to be in international community of economic growth you have to be like the Jones. Stop condemning IMF or the Finance minister. The finance minister is doing what she believe is good for the country.

I dont know why people are comparing fuel price in another country to that of Nigeria. They should also compare the salary structure of our executives

Govt didnt remove fuel subsidy so that we will be at the same rate with other countries, No. They did it so that they will have more money to lootwork with

It beats me as well, It seems like we still have retar,ds in this country as we speak

Even after 51 years, people would still use tribalistic sentiment to talk about subsidy.

The Federal government can not remove fuel subsidy when it has no guaranteed plan to refurbish existing refineries in Nigeria to start refining crude oil or build new ones, its an ill timed move that is catastrophic to the already very weak and battered Naira in the global market, although the long term effects of the policy if pursued religiously is laudable despite its non-populist support, timing is very important.

I hope we will all be "matured enough" to leave:

1) Tribalism
2) Party Affiliations
3) Personal hatred, out of this discuss?

Its not about where you come from (we all buy fuel), which party you support or voted for (we all pay same amount at the pump) or how much you love/hate GEJ and Iweala (we all have looters/performers that we hate/love!)

Let us all take our pen and paper and answer the following questions:

1) Do you think it would have made more sense and reduced the effect and suffering of the poor masses "if the President decides he would repair at least two Refineries first" (or even build one new one in addition), before removing the subsidy?

2) Do you think if Electricity was stable and everyone is not completely dependent on PMS (Petrol) for all our energy needs, we would feel the pinch of the removal this much? If yes, do you not think Mr. President would have shown "love and empathy for the poor masses" if he decides that he will remove subsidy when Electricity capacity reaches around 75% of requirements?

3.) If the subsidy is not benefiting the poor masses of Nigeria as the President has said, some people obviously are the beneficiaries. Is it not more honorable for the President and his economic team headed by Okonjo Iweala, to first decapitate this "beneficiaries" (others call them Cabal!) by tackling them, after which he can remove the subsidy such that the masses would benefit from such removal?

4). Knowing how fully dependent on PMS, the whole economy is (from Transport, to Electricity for small cottage firms, to household power generation, to food preservation, e.t.c) would the President and his World bank Iweala not have shown a better understanding of the Nigerian terrain, if they have decided to "phase-in" the removal at say 20%, every six months while Nigerians adjust to it and they in-turn repair our Refineries and up-grade our electricity Network?

5) if the whole idea of subsidy removal arose out of the need to "procure and save money for other infrastructures we need", do you think it makes sense, when the President met 23Billion dollars in the Excess Crude Account and just before his election, he shared this money out to the Governors and himself instead of using same to build the same "infrastructure" he is now removing subsidy for? Would that not have been less painful for Nigerians? A New refinery costs 6Billion dollars!

6.) If Mr. President and his economic Team can blow-away 23Biliion dollars realized from excess crude account, why should we think he would not also "share and loot" (since we cannot identify any development/infrastructure that the money produced) whatever savings the nation makes from fuel subsidy removal? Why should/would this be different?

7) If subsidy removal is very good for our economy, as it will eliminate waste and improve efficiency? What do you then call the squandering of the 23Billion dollars that was "saved" earlier? Is that how the savings and efficiency will come about, honestly?

cool Would you trust your employer if he lied to you that you need a Pay-Cut because the company was broke while you later realized that he has actually just bought a house in Dubai, from company funds? Going by Mr. President's financial allocation to his own office (Groceries for Aso Rock = 1.3Billion., Dame Jonathan Office renovation = 5Billion, Senators whooping salaries, largest contingent to any foreign function, e.t.c), do you think it is fair that it is people whose total yearly income is less that 200,000 naira (or that woman selling sweets and biscuits while trying to raise two kids to University level), are the ones who should be further taxed to fund any "savings"? Why cant the stupendously rich also tighten their belt proportionately?

9.)Governance is an agreement based on TRUST between the governed and the Governors. If Mr. President told us "We would CONSULT between now and April 2012 before making a final decision on subsidy removal", only for him to announce over a 100% increase in fuel price on the first day of the year (bear in mind that a lot of people have made so many financial outlays and expenses based on the current price and many have traveled to their homeland, based on the current Transport cost). Do you think this speaks well of someone we can refer to as "father of the Nation"?. Does this kind of behavior engender trust between Nigerians and Mr. President? Can we ever believe whatever he says again?

10) They say the "Voice of man is the voice of God". A lot of Nigerians are already traumatized by the recent lost of loved ones, be it from the sectarian/religious killings that followed the election, the Bombings from Boko Haram or even avoidable deaths on our roads, hospital, generator explosions, e.t.c. By increasing fuel price by over 100%, are you Mr. President making life better for them or are you increasing their burden? Have these people not suffered enough (from your hands and that of the terrorist and other avoidable situations) or do you think they deserve more.

Let us fear God, (even if some dont believe in Him), at least let us fear our own Conscience.

You can do that if you are prepared to leave power and, may be, die. This is politics at the highest level. It is a serious business characterized by clandestine moves.

GEJ is in a tight corner. It isn't as straightforward as you guys think.

First, Okonjo Iweala did threaten to resign if Jonathan bowed to pressure to rescind the Fuel subsidy decision, at the hurriedly convened FEC meeting.
I have read it in at least five different online News sources. The accounts are vivid enough for anyone to know that the story was not made up.

See two below and read yourself. (and dont expect a government paper like Daily Times to carry such report! grin )

So, lets quit harassing Alh harem who posted the heading.

What she just did on  her Twitter page is called "DAMAGE CONTROL" cause it will show they are in disarray already and that would embolden the oppositions.

Even some of his Ministers were wondering about the "timing", l guess they dont want to "go down with him" since its obvious he is on a road to perdition!

@lastpage,
I have never been completely in support or against subsidy removal but after listening to health minister being drilled by the channels TV morning team, i began to see reason with the government. I will attempt to discuss this subsidy thing the much i can:
1. Timing:
I was one of the people who felt the timing was the only wrong thing about the susidy removal.
Now, they initially said it will be done by jan 1 and later moved it to april and all of a sudden, it was done on Jan 1. Thats looks like insensitivity but it is quite tactical!
Tactical because all the marketers should have started massive importation and hoarding of subsidized fuel they will sell post subsidy regime thereby still taking from the government and yet creating artificial scarcity that will have increased the price to what we are buying it now or even more! That means that the price increase would have started earlier with subsidy still intact!
The government outsmarted them this time even though the populace did not understand it and is not finding that amusing at all.

I will still post on all the other arguments you raised on this subsidy issue though i will appreciate if no one throws any insults cos any insult will not go unreplied.

Thank you.

People should stop comparing us with other countries. Nigeria has nothing on ground to justify this fuel subsidy removal; no electricty- people buy fuel to run generator for their businesses. Now prices will go up because of cost of high operations cost. Salaries are poor. Roads are bad. No jobs- a lot of dependants and extended dependants, when you work, you earn salary not only for your self and immediate family but for a much more extension of people. No pipe borne water. Even food and meat will be more expensive now that cost of transportating them by traders have gone up. Many countries have food and meat far more than Nigeria. It's cheaper buying used cars from neigboring countries. Nothing is cheap for the common man, things are cheaper in neigboring countries.
