Maths Tricks, Questions And Brain Teasers by Nobody: 10:54pm On Jan 19, 2012
High time we had something for maths peeps, if you know what I mean. This thread will provide so-called maths tricks for those who want to impress their bfs/gfs, questions for those who want a bit of some maths challenge, and brain teasers for those who sit all day on their computers.
Please contribute and be creative, at least a little wink

And will this be the first of its kind on NL? undecided

sauer!

If you have three apples and you took away two, how many will you have?
Re: Maths Tricks, Questions And Brain Teasers by Nobody: 11:04pm On Jan 19, 2012
A guy can upload 1MB on the internet for 20mins. Another can upload the same 1MB for 15mins. What are the chances they can both upload a divisible 1MB file for 10mins, if they work together? undecided

wrong!  tongue you took away two, remember?
Re: Maths Tricks, Questions And Brain Teasers by Nobody: 11:08pm On Jan 19, 2012
I was running in my head through my store of maths tricks and discovered:

3 can divide any number, which if you add its digits is divisible itself by 3
e.g 27/3 = 9, but then (2+7)/3 = 3!

393/3 = 131, and (3+9+3)/3 = 5!

Try yours! wink

in how many ways can you choose 5 moderators (3 for auto section and 2 for romance) on NL out of 20 applicants? Consider that 3 applicants are not qualified because they have been initially banned!

In how many ways can you spell NAIRA, if N has to start and A has to end all the time!?

hmmm. . . .you never sharp reach! Yes, you have them with you. But cos you are "away", you aren't close to the remaining one.
So, you have only two, not three!
Re: Maths Tricks, Questions And Brain Teasers by Nobody: 11:15pm On Jan 19, 2012
You are on an island in the middle of a lake. The lake is in a remote part of the country and there has never been a bridge connecting the island to the mainland.

Every day a tractor and wagon gives hay rides around the island. Puzzled as to how the tractor had gotten onto the island, you ask around and find out that the tractor was not transported to the island by boat or by air. Nor was it built on the island.

Explain how the tractor got there?

Look at the picture and say the COLOR of the word, not the word itself.

Yes its just one, since you can't pronounce these words as Naira

hmmm. . . .well, the aim is not to make them pronounceable, just to have them!

Brute force: NAIRA =NAIRA, NIRAA, NARIA, NRIAA, NIARA, NRAIA

using permutation: place N and A at beginning and end of word respectively. There are two A's. Since they are indistinguishable, it changes nothing. Assuming no repetition then, the letters in the middle (3 of them) can be arranged in 3 x 2 x 1 ways. So we have 6 ways!

If repetition were allowed, in which case the two A's are distinguishable (?), then just multiply answer by 2. So, we have 12 ways. Not a sane answer, though! wink
