Nairalanders, I need your advice on something strange that happened this morning. I woke up to a random Instagram call from someone named Jessica. I didn’t recognize the name, and by the time I got to my phone, the call had ended. Moments later, I received a DM from her saying, “Hey, good morning.” I replied, asking if we knew each other, and she said, “Well, we follow each other. Can you chat?” That already felt odd, especially at 4am. I asked what was so urgent that she had to call me at that hour. She replied, “Sorry, I didn’t know you were asleep.” I responded, “So you expected me to be doing what at 4am?” I don’t entertain frivolous conversations, so I asked directly what she wanted. She said she needed financial help and would pay me back. I was stunned. I don’t know this person from anywhere, and she’s asking me for money? I checked her profile—last post was in 2021. She seemed like someone who had her head on straight, or at least approachable. But randomly calling someone off social media at 4am to ask for money? That’s wild. I declined and removed her from my list. I don’t need that kind of energy around me. Now here’s where I need your thoughts. I’ve heard a lot of negative talk about Nigerian ladies being overly focused on money. Is this stereotype actually true? Are many of you really just about “money, money, money” with little else to offer? I’m not saying it’s only a Nigerian thing—I've dated beautiful women from different parts of the world—but this kind of behavior is embarrassing. If you’re going to ask someone for help, at least build a connection first. Don’t just randomly call people off the internet like it’s normal. Maybe it’s just me, but I find this kind of approach very off-putting. What do you all think? Is this becoming a trend or just an isolated case? I’d really appreciate your honest opinions. |
