Soldiers and State Security operatives engaged in a four and half-hour shootout Tuesday morning with suspected members of the Boko Haram sect in Kano leaving a man and his wife dead.

Uzairu Abba Abdullahi, aged about 30 years and his wife, were the suspects killed in the gun battle at Hotoro Quarters Layin Makabarta in the Kano metropolis.

According to agency reports, the combined team of security operatives swooped on the house, suspected to be a Boko Haram safe house, shortly after midnight.

However, rather than surrendering the occupants are said to have opened fire on the soldiers and SS operates setting off a shootout which lasted for about four and a half hours after which Abdullahi and his wife were shot dead.

"They came in large numbers, some of them stayed on the main road, while others came in through the alley. They began shooting, and he fired back,  This was followed by a barrage of gunfire by the security men," a neighbour, Mohammed Maikubi Bala said.

Empty bullet shells lay strewn in a pool of blood just a few steps into the house. A cousin squatted near the blood.

"I was called and told that my brother and his wife had been shot. He was a simple man known to be peaceful and as far as I know he has never been questioned by the security over any links with Boko Haram," the cousin, Shehu Idris, told AFP.

A car in the driveway was riddled with bullets and its windshield smashed.

Relatives and a crowd of curious neighbours mingled outside before police came to search the house.

It was not clear where the sound of explosions emanated from although a resident suggested there was use of heavy machine guns during the raid.

"Everybody in the neighbourhood was in fear. We couldn't sleep," said a resident who lives a few houses away.

Residents had feared the city was under fresh attacks just days after coordinated gun-and-bomb attacks on Friday killed 185 people, more than two dozen of them policemen, in Boko Haram's deadliest ever operation.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch, believes attacks blamed on the Islamist sect Boko Haram have killed more than 935 people since the group launched a violent campaign in July 2009, including more than 250 this year alone.

The group urged authorities to put a stop to "this campaign of terror" and prosecute perpetrators of "these reprehensible crimes."

"Boko Haram's attacks show a complete and utter disregard for human life," said Corinne Dufka, HRW's West Africa researcher.

Also on Tuesday, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero,  Enir of Kazaure, Alhaji Najib Hussaini Adamu, Emire of Dutse, Alhaji Nuhu Mohammed Sunusi and former governor of Kano State, who is also traditional title holder of Sarduanan Kano, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, Tuesday visited the Murtala mohammed Hospital, Kano to greet victims of last Friday’s bomb blasts across the state.

Guy try think rationally now. They went there hoping to arrest and take him alive, i doubt the intention was to kill them.

A Nigerian army and cowardice, shooting moving and non-moving things to make sure his next foot step forward is safe.  undecided

But he is a typical example. A soldier that shoots at trees and shadows in case they come alive before moving a step forward.

@Op,
They had orders to take him alive. Maybe that's why the gun fight took that long until they had to no choice than kill him.

Residents of Tsamiyar Boka, Kano, gather outside the house of textile merchant on Tuesday

Security agents on Tuesday killed Uzairu Abba Abdullahi, a textile merchant suspected to be a leader of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, during a five-hour gun duel.

His pregnant wife, who was at his residence in Hotoro, Nassarawa Local Government Area when the team stormed the building, was also shot dead. After the battle, the security men reportedly arrested one of the late businessman’s sons.

A family source described Abdullahi as a 2002 Mass Communication graduate of Bayero University, Kano, but security sources described him as one of the planners and executors of last Friday’s multiple bomb blasts and attacks on Kano.

Our correspondent gathered that the team that killed him comprised soldiers, policemen and security personnel drawn from other forces. The team reportedly stormed the suburb at about midnight following a tip-off that members of the sect were there in large numbers.

THE PUNCH learnt that on reaching the house, Abdulllahi and his men opened fire and the team returned fire. A senior security official told our correspondent that the gunfight raged from 12.30am-5.30am.

Our correspondent reports that while the battle lasted, residents were kept awake for hours as guns boomed. The scene of the incident is close to the farm and horse stable of Chief Deinde Fernandez, who is also Garsan Fulanin Kano, a traditional title in the Kano emirate.

A security official said an army officer who was part of the security operatives was shot in the leg. He was said to be the only victim on the side of the security agents.

The source said, “We had trailed this man for some time. We placed surveillance on him as soon as we received a tip-off that he usually conducted himself in a suspicious manner. So, we decided to pick him up.

“Unfortunately, in the course of the exchange of gunfire, he and his wife were killed. But we captured his son alive.

“The order we got from our Oga (higher authorities) was for us to catch him (Abdullahi) alive so he could be useful in our investigation of Friday’s multiple bomb attacks on security forces and innocent Nigerians. Unfortunately, his resistance led to his death.”

THE PUNCH gathered that before the operatives swooped on the Boko Haram leader, the security authorities had ordered the 9th Squadron Mobile Police, which is close to the scene of the operation, to be on standby.

The early morning Muslim prayers could not be said in the area until about 6.30am, instead of the usual 5.30am.

Efforts made to confirm the incident by newsmen were rebuffed by the army and police authorities who refused to give details of the attack.

The late Abdulahi’s cousin, Alhaji Ali Abdullahi, confirmed the death of the suspect and his wife to reporters.

According to him, the late suspected Boko Haram leader hailed from Gaya Local Government Area in the state. However, he claimed he was an easygoing man who related well with his neighbours. He described the incident leading to his death as “very unfortunate”.

Ali also lamented that all the efforts made by the family to recover his cousin’s corpse and that of his wife, for the purpose of prompt burial, had proved abortive.

Our correspondent gathered that most residents of Hotoro have relocated from the area to safer zones within the metropolis out of the fear that the security agents might return.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Government has organised a mass burial for unclaimed bodies from the Friday attacks. THE PUNCH gathered that about 50 bodies were buried in Kalebawa village, along Kano-Danbatta road on Tuesday.

A source at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital, who pleaded anonymity, said the corpses, which had been at the hospital since the attack, had started to decompose.

Our correspondent saw two vehicles of the mortuary unit, filled with the corpses, leaving the hospital. He later learnt that corpses that had been properly identified remained in the mortuary for their loved ones to claim.

There was no official confirmation of the actual number of the corpses taken for mass burial, however, as all efforts to contact the hospital officials proved abortive.

Also on Tuesday, the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, led other emirs on a sympathy visit to the the victims receiving treatment at the Murtala Muhammed Specialist Hospital.

Emir Bayero went in company with the Emir of Kazaure, Alhaji Najib Adamu; Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Nuhu Muhammad; and the Sardaunan Kano and immediate past governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau

why did they kill a woman and her husband if the gun fighting was for over 4 hours? i understand if the husband was shooting back and got killed but why was no one else killed but the husband and wife? was it revenge for a failed operation to please the bosses from misinformation, this is unfortunate because the army is going nowhere with its force, its just making things worse by targeting innocent people or not sharing honest information with the public

In previous raids they av given us better details, i wonder why they decided to give us half picture.

Q: how do u know the woman wsn't shooting? True but almost irrelevant , I believe the army should've training worhty of maiming armed and dangerous targets,, a pregnant 1 in this case ,, afterall the report did say they were under surveilance 4 days or wat were d surveiling, good surveilance especially intended 2 catch a target, would know when he was @ his weakest , wuldn't need a 100 soldiers, police etc 2 catch a dangerous man nd his pregnant wife,, Boko haram or not ,, I believe protecting his pregnant wife wuld come 2 play in such a situation, Boko haram or not, moreso a Boko Haram leader as d reports stated wuld've do or die security guys at his gate,, moreso wat happened 2 d entire gang dat dey said was having a meeting in his house,, did dey run nd leave dier leader or in another opinion killin his wife as a cover up of sth mischevious,
Dis r just my thoughts by d way,

you people cant just reason well. ANY ONE THAT CAN BOLDLY CONFRONT THE ARMY IN A GUN BATTLE IS DEFINITELY A CRIMINAL, be it BH or any fu*cking shooter. It baffles me reading some of the posts here.
That woman is a criminal, so long you carry the baby of a criminal, and if that woman is spared and allowed to deliver, the child would still end up as a member of the sect. so what are we saying ? ? ? ?

Am alarmed that a pregnant woman was killed& nobody is asking questions. In our urge to destroy BH,nobody seems to b asking questions while murders are committed. It shd b a source of concern to any rightthinking person that an assortment of armed forces will confront two people in a gun fight, including a pregnant woman& all three will die wt no single casualty on d other side. This raid has more questions than answers its purported to av given.Yes,BH shd b destroyed for its evil nature, but evn if d merchant was linked to BH,him being captured alive wud eventually have led to the saving of hundreds more that maybe killed;otherwise am taking d police aspect of this raid wt a whole bag of salt. The raid looks typical& I won't b surprised if it doesn't turn out to be entirely as we av bn told
