I think you are focusing on some specific situations in certain matches while what is happening here is a general overview and assessment. I would not call him a great overall defender. I fully agree that he is exceptional in 1v1 situations but he has been found wanting in positioning, awareness, decision making several times. Then he is really an eye sore going forward.

With his skillset the only big club that could have bought him was our clown-managed club. The fee of 50m is just extra punishment.

As far as it is defending (which is mostly defending in 1-1 situations ) AWB Is better.

No need for all this long story. AWB never had the potential to be a great modem full back.

It’s easier to train a skilled player to become more defensively solid than it is to magically infuse skills and technique into a defensively solid player with no skill.

Chelsea, Bayern, etc. have all won the UCL without an “Mbappé” in their ranks.

Man sees the ball going through to a winger, doesn't attempt to intercept or anything. The ball gets to the winger and then he waits for the winger to make a run and Bam! He slides in. That's the only thing he's good at.
