From the BBC formation chart, which is corroborated by Ass football chart, there can't be a player in the hole in a 4-3-3. Same as 4-5-1.

...........................................
(4-3-3), (4-5-1), (4-4-2), (4-4-1-1) and (4-2-3-1) are all closely rated. The major thing distinguishing 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-1-1 from the rest is that there is a playmaker- hole.

According to association football, 4-4-1-1 and 4-2-2 can easily be confused.

'Interpretations of 4–4–1–1 can be slightly muddled, as some might say that the extent to which a forward has dropped off and separated himself from the other can be debated. The system was most prominently used during the 2009-10 season by Fulham F.C, with midfielder Zoltan Gera playing behind forward Bobby Zamora as they upset many teams across Europe on their way to the 2010 UEFA Europa League Final.'
.........................................................................

4-3-3 and 4-5-1 are closely related.

It was rumoured earlier today that bitter rivals
Manchester City were closing on Falcao but United
boss Louis van Gaal looks likely to complete the
sensational deal. (6 mins ago)

BBC:
This formation is quite an attacking one.

The 4-3-3 system - that is four defenders, three midfielders and three attackers - allows you to have three attackers while still having a strong midfield. The three midfielders will normally play quite closely together to give protection to the defence and so they cannot be passed around by the opposition. The three strikers will split across the pitch to provide width to the attack.

Usually you would have a central attacker with one each side of him.

The 4-3-3 does not actually differ that much from the 4-5-1 formation. Former England coach. Barcelona play with this system with Samuel Eto'o, Ronaldinho and Ludovic Giuly. Very few teams actually start with this line-up as you need to have specialist attackers. But if a manager needs a goal late on in a game then he may opt to move to three up front.

BBC:
...........................................................

BBC:4-5-1

Traditionally favoured by European teams, the 4-5-1 formation is becoming ever more popular in the Premiership.
The 4-5-1 - that is four defenders, five midfielders and one striker - is often seen in European games where teams face a tough away fixture and the manager chooses to pack the midfield.

It can be very effective, particularly at keeping possession, and with five midfielders covering the defence it provides a solid base.
Sometimes you will see 10 men behind the ball. But it also means that attacking options are limited. The poor old striker often has a lone battle up front. It works best with a big, strong front man, such as Chelsea's Didier Drogba, who can win the ball in the air and hold it up until support arrives.

Otherwise it can produce relatively few goal-scoring chances.
This system has a lot in common with the 4-3-3 formation, where the wide midfielders join the lone striker.
Jose Mourinho used this particularly well during his (first) time at Chelsea.
Put simply, they play 4-3-3 when they have the ball and 4-5-1 when they do not.

elampiro:

Take a look at Rooney's position vs Liverpool. Rooney was in the hole, but because of the fact that United came under pressure, Rooney appeared to be a midfielder. Same with Mata against Stoke in the Carling cup.

The second chart showed A real 4-3-3 when United played City. We started with a clear 4-3-3.

it's the kinda player that plays in that tip of the triangle that determines if it's 4-2-3-1 or 3-3. rosicky is not a "number 10" so that ends that your line of argument. that's 4-3-3. in the other examples you have shown, rooney, silva, etc are all number 10s.

MrTA: Hmmm, not dure i believe this falcao nonsense.
Anyways happy new month to y'all and happy transfer deadline day too! cheesy

there's some truth to it - RVP needs knee surgery & we cannot even rely on rooney of these days to pull any trees. did you hear what scholes said about him on BT sports?

Scholes on BTsport on saturday:
"Kagawa needed a 10 game run to show what he can do. Never given a chance, yet Rooney had 10 years."

that's the bias in the english media scholes has exposed. rooney can go 80% of the season with shyte performance and the media will back him up that he needs time to get rid of his rustiness. they would blame the weather, his cigarettes, his newborn baby, etc on his form.

whereas, players like nani, cleverley, mata, fellaini, kagawa, anderson, etc are expected to perform within 2-3 games regardless of their own issues otherwise they are not good enough for the red shirt.

if RVP really needs to sort his knee problems, then we need a striker of falcao's calibre. he's told monaco he's leaving. monaco are also ready to sell according to guillem balagué.

i also heard through the grapevine that van gaal was in italy on saturday night to personally watch arturo vidal's game to assess his knee.

this is going to be the longest day ever.

elampiro: RVP needing a knee surgery may have prompted the move for Falcao.

If Falcao comes to Man United, then one of Rooney and RVP will have to leave to some where they can retire in peace.

Quick question, when did RVP pick up this Knee injury, against Burnley ?
I hope this falcao story isn't true
We don't have a quality DM and we are blowing all this Money on a Striker who probably won't be serviced properly.
Are this People signing with sense ? Make them look Chelsea na I don't think their is any weakness in that Squad.

So when Rooney is played in the midfield, you will still count him as a striker? Players are adapted where the natural players arent available. RVP is a natural winger but he was gradually converted by Wenger. RVP himself said he was scared when he was told to try that position.

Or you may say Kagawa was in the hole even when SAF used him in the wing? Januzaj, Giggs have played in the hole for us.

As long as their is a playmaker, it's not a 4-3-3.
