Contracting na the way to go on any field but perm wages is the best way to judge long-term prospects when committing to a new learning process. What guarantee is there that by the time one qualifies, contracting roles will still be abundant and at that day rate? Generally, statisticians have always been poorly paid but I think say the developer angle go improve things somewhat. There are many data analysts and Econometricians earning 20k-30k in London who will flood the developer field if a premium is added for them adding Python to their current skills, and they will drag that rate down oh. On BI angle, from what I heard, Cognos Developers seem to start at 80k which seems to hold more prospects.
Data science is where the money is @ and you don’t necessarily have to specialise in a field. However You do need to be technically sound in coding & quantitive analysis

I’ve ported to EY in their FDA team doing exactly that and permanent salary can be very competitive

Experienced Data Scientist earn >70 large

It helps if you’ve got a highly numerate background though

Most accountants don't study accounting in Uni. They do a chartership after uni to become accountants. Even the ones that studied accounting still have to do chartership to become accountants, so I don't see that you are behind anyone if that is your chosen route.
Thanks boss, it's good I brought it up. Man has to think about the future.

Oga, abeg make we chat on email or FB. I need some step by step coaching on the coding side of things. eg how many years do you quantify as Experienced cos everything na cost-benefit analysis. I currently work within private healthcare, and you can class me as mid-Band 8c currently. I know say you been dey with our regulatory body before in similar quantitative/coding role. If one is to follow the Data Science path and jump in as a greenhorn, where would one be starting from financially etc? What languages should one be learning etc to blend it all together? Bearing in mind I'm from a quantitative background before entering finance but with poor coding knowledge.

Yeah let’s touch base via FB
The coding shouldn’t be too difficult for you considering your maths background. Phyton and relational databases are pretty standard but your bargaining chip is your ability to find trends in data, structure and test data using different techniques (regression et al)
I’m sure it should be pretty standard for you.

Why would you do Masters in Management Accounting?

Your chartership is what counts in Accounting and if you are to top up with Masters do so in MBA, MSc in Finance or CFA. Masters in Accounting is almost redundant.

That said, if you wish to get a Masters in Accounting, you are best going through the Oxford Brooks route while simultaneously pursuing ACCA. For less than N1.5m, you can gain ACCA chartership, with BSc and Masters from Oxford Brookes. I am currently sponsoring a mentee in Nigeria through Oxford Brooks route. He is currently writing his thesis at BSc stage.

Ok thank you sir Ibime.

I’m trying to chose between starting ICAN or moving abroad for masters while putting into consideration the opportunities available.

What would you suggest please, enrolling for ICAN or gathering the money to pursue masters abroad and hopefully try to job and settle there? I will appreciate any help you could render in this regard.

My personal opinion, ICAN is a waste of time unless you have a job in Nigeria that mandates you to write it. Better to write ACCA..

If you plan on living abroad, its better to go for masters, find what sells in your new environment and go into it

If you are young under 25, You should be going into IT look for what is in vogue, some programming knowledge will help also think Data Science

Correct me if wrong but didn't you study Medicine?

There may be a 3rd option which is ACCA which achieves all of your goals.

ICAN is 3 years.

ACCA can be finished in 2.5 to 3 years picking up BSc and MSc from Oxford Brookes Uni along the way. You can then also convert from ACCA to ICAN within one year, achieving all the goals of ICAN plus UK degree and UK Masters and ACCA which gives you the licence to practice almost anywhere in the world.

If you are very serious, I can put you in touch with someone who started the process Sept 2016 and is close to completing the BSc stage. He should have full ACCA this time next year with Masters by end of year. He is a Nairalander also.

yes o, takes a lot to be called a Data Scientist

all these Tensorflow, panda, numpy and databases

no be small thing, but i think companies now take Big Data very serious....people are harvesting Data anyhow nowadays and there are not so many Data Scientists like developers

Thanks.

No I didn’t study Medicine. I studied Accounting and graduated in 2016. I am serious about this and trying to put things together.

To cover the 3 years, do you have any idea how much it’s going to cost overall?

ACCA alone, I reckon N1m-N1.2m over 3 years so about N400K per year.

Add Oxford Brookes BSc and MSc will push you between N1.5m-N1.7m.

That's paying for exams and course materials plus Oxford Brookes fee. No lessons. I don't think any serious person will need lessons to pass the exams.

ACCA used to have 14 exams. I think they just cut it down to 13.

With degree in accounting already, you should get exemption for F1-F4 if your uni is recognised, meaning you have only 9 exams.

After writing F5 - F9, you can submit your thesis to Oxford Brookes for BSc. This stage should take you no more than 1 year-1.5 years given your background. Then another 4 exams and you can submit your MSc thesis. This is an additional 1 year.

With these, you can establish yourself in Nigeria if all else fails, and provide the platform to get a job abroad when you go for Masters. Going abroad for Masters is not a problem, it is having the skills/qualifications to get a job while abroad to establish your stay there. Be wary of doing Masters abroad without Chartership cos chances of getting the job to keep you abroad will be lower.

The thing just tire person. it seems the world revolves around those who are in the pure science fields and those of in the social sciences are not getting looked at. Imagine me trying to secure an internship placement and most people I talked to about it have never even heard of Social Work

Yes o. Just read it. Same thing is happening witn your man Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court.

Please can someone explain why if 2 drunk people bang the man is accused of rape and the woman is automatically the victim, and why male teachers banging their students get 40yrs in jail but female teachers banging their students only lose their jobs or maybe get 4yrs?
