what gentiger said is very correct,you can stay outside the us as a green card holder in a period not exceeding six months or one year with a strong reason given to the embassy and you must stay in the us for 2/5 years to be qualified for citizenship that is if u dnt have any criminal record.

For staying outside the US for 12 months, u need the re-entry permit before leaving and good explanation to the border post officials or immigration guys on your return and for 6 months you do nothing than to get back within 6 months.

What is 2/5 years? My pal in MD has been living there since 2009 April,never left the US and was qualified last November and will file next month.

On your previous post, u made mention of staying for 30 months to qualify for the citizenship. What I want to know is; will the 30 months be spent at a stretch or one can be travelling and coming bak without staying for 6months.
