The Federal Government has commenced the construction of three Almajiri Schools in Oyo State.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr. M. Wike stated this in Ibadan when he paid a working visit to Governor Abiola Ajimobi in his office at the Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan.

President Goodluck Jonathan in Sokoto sometime ago, inaugurated the Almajiri Model School. The school was to provide the conventional system of education to millions of Almajiris on the streets of major cities and towns, especially in the Northern part of the country.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Wike said the establishment of Almajiri School was aimed at providing education to all children who are of school age.

The Minister explained that the visit gave him the opportunity to inspect works on the schools which are located in Oyo town, Ogun and Ibadan.

Out of the 400 proposed Almajiri Schools across the country, Mr. Wike said 61 will be handled by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

He noted that over One billion naira covering years 2011 and 2012 of UBEC grant to the state had not been accessed.

Responding, Governor Abiola Ajimobi said education is the largest industry in the state. He commended the Federal Government for increasing the number of Almajiri schools in the state from one to three.

He however expressed the readiness of the state Government to access the UBEC grant with a promise to use the fund judiciously.
