Chelsea’s double: National Assembly to honour Mikel

All roads will lead to the National Assembly on June 19, when the House of Representative Committee on Sports will honour holidaying Nigerian international, John Mikel Obi, at the complex in recognition of his winning both the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League with his Premiership side, Chelsea, in the just concluded season.

Disclosing this to Daily Sunsports in Abuja last weekend, the Chairman of the House Committee, Hon. Godfrey Ali Gaiya, hinged the decision to honour the Chelsea’s star on the determination of the National Assembly to reward excellence, stressing that Mikel deserves more than the honour for making Nigeria proud.

The committee’s boss further added that the National Assembly wants to use the reception and honour to encourage other Nigerian footballers and sportsmen at home and abroad and show them the interest Nigerians attach on their achievements. “We have tentatively set aside Tuesday, June 19, as the day to receive Mikel Obi, as a honour for being a worthy Nigerian soccer ambassador as an indispensable and integral member of the Chelsea squad that who both the English FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

“The House wishes to use the honour for Mikel as a way of encouraging our footballers and sportsmen, both at home and abroad, that the government and people of Nigeria are proud of their achievements and exploits and will continue to support them in their efforts to make the country proud.

“Mikel did Nigeria proud, he is our worthy ambassador for proving his competent in Chelsea squad that lifted both the FA Cup and UEFA Championship league. His presence and rating among the best 22 players in the world league was enough indication that something good can always come out of Nigeria,” he said.

Speaking on the arrangement, the consultant to the Committee, Muhammed Abubakar, disclosed that the reception would rounded up with a night party at De Carabian Night Club where some few Chelsea fans would have the opportunity to meet and rock with Mikel, stressing that it would be strictly by invitation.

What a country indeed, oh my goodness is honouring mikel a sole responsibility of d senate. Smh. I am sceptic blues fan but if mikel is to be honour it's not in a time like this, after dana air crash, boko H., oil subsidy saga, new electricity tariff. If it needed in all cost then it shld b NFF responsibility

But seriously, who comes up with ideas such as these. Do these bloated disillusioned men just sit around with nothing in their heads but such irrelevant acts? It shows just disconnected from reality they all are.
The National Assembly of a Sovereign Nation sets aside a day, wastes tax-payers money, use up time they should use to deliberate on pressing issues that affect the country to "honour" a footballer that won the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup?
Which way Nigeria, which to go...which way my Fatherland, which way to go.

Is this meant for the Joke section?
Or rather does Sun newspaper now have a Joke section?

If this is true, Mikel had better stay away otherwise his pocket will be lighter after leaving National Assembly!

He hasn't won any trophy for Nigeria and he his always reluctant to play for us and even when he plays, he plays like a woman. Yet he is being honoured for winining a trophy with a foreign side. Thats just craz.y

He is being honoured by a committee not the entire National Assembly. The first paragraph
clearly states: "the House of Representative Committee on Sports will honour holidaying
Nigerian international, John Mikel Obi
". But if you read only the topic of the post,
you will not get the full picture.

What else do you expect from a committee on Sports. In my opinion, their proposal is right
proper.
