What then do we give to a child that has cough. Am battling with one now, even hospital gives cough syrup to babies.
blank:

Please throw away any cough syrup or expoctorant you have. It causes future problems for the child. I am battling with asthma like symptoms in my toddler cos of all the expectorants he has taken. In fact, i have stopped all multivite and stuff. Just Ventolin for now.

ify's world:

maran1983: My dear, I didn't wait to be told before I stopped giving my kids any cough syrup.
I read an article where a pediatrician advised against cough syrups and co for children.
What I do instead is give steam baths and use mentholatum or silverbird mixed with shea butter for them when they catch a cold.

All the cough syrup i gave were from the hospital. It was when he started having asthma symptoms that we took him to a specialist and they told us the cause. My brother who is a doctor had mentioned it before but i ignored it as it seemed so harmless. Do what the poster suggested above if you need to treat a cold.

sexyshe: Pls mothers I need your help,I have a five weeks old baby who sleeps during the day but doesn't at night, from 8pm to 3 or 4am she's awake, eyes wide open an sometimes cry,I try everythin to make her sleep but she won't,I will change change her diapers several times, feed her, carry her but eyes stil wide open.it makes me. Worry cos I don't sleep at night anymore and I wil resume work on monday,I wakeup looking. Very tired and stressed, pls mothers do babies hav sleeping drugs so I can giv to her at night to help her sleep.pls mothers I need urgent reply, thanks

You have to teach her that night is for sleep and daytime for napping and play. Set out a one week plan. Start by ensuring she stays longer in the monings before she sleeps. Even if she is grumpy, extend it. Play with her, make sure the room is bright with light when she is sleeping in the daytime. Don't let her wake up by herself. Wake her up after like 1 hr and then feed and play with her. Continue to stretch the time she stays awake in the morning but in the night (put her to bed from 6 or 7pm, she will sleep longer than if it is later). Give her a warm bath, feed her, no playing at all, keep the lights dim, feed her very well and then put her to bed. Do not play with her etc. Let her get used to night time being sleep time before you can now bring in new things. Sometimes allow her to cry for a little while.

I had to do it for my 2nd son when he was proving nightrider. He now sleeps at 6:30pm till 12 when he will eat agin and then sleep till 5 the next morning. He is 9 months now.

How old is your baby? If she's 9 months and above, then it's ok to feed her oats but please, use her formula instead of regular adult milk, cheers.

Here in europe, doctors don't prescribe cough syrup for babies less than 3years. cough syrups have side effects on their delicate organs.

Hello everyone, my lil' man will be 4 weeks old in 2 days and I can say I have not slept for 3 hrs straight since I had him, hence, I have been tired and stressed, when he sleeps during the day is when I try to get things done and by d time I'm done, he's waking up. Then he has had a sort of nasal congestion for abt 4 days now, took him to d hospital but d doc said it wld clear off, it scares me when he breathes and he makes a croaky sound, not all the time though. Pls what can I do, I have a mucus extractor but scared of using it and besides, I don't know how to use it. Lastly, he has rashes all over his face, its not heat rashes, I have sent for baby tribotan, I hope it works. Ideas, advises and suggestions are welcome. Thank u.

Please, do not mind them. You are doing great. His teeth will come in its own time. My son had teeth from 4 months and then no new one since he was 7 months. Each child has a different system. Giving Piccan or whatever will not make the teeth come out faster.

kessy girl: Please I'd like to know if it is adviceable to buy baby bed or let my baby sleep on my bed.
Another thing, please what can I pack in my hospital bag to take to the hospital.
Thank you.
well if U̶̲̥̅̊ ask me I will say its not neccesary. I A̶̲̥̅♏ a first time mum of a 7months and 2days old baby. Most babies don't stay in their beds for long. Like my baby she didn't stay up to two months b4 it became uncomfortable for her. And as for U̶̲̥̅̊ it is somehow very tiring to get up and pick him/her up to breastfeed at night.another thing is when the child lies in your bosom it fastens the bonding process of mother and child. But if U̶̲̥̅̊ still wish to buy its ok cos its always very lovely seeing them in it. At least the child should enjoy it while it lasts.

No loose stools her doc said I should not use any other drugs that D̶̲̥̅̊ε̲̣̣̣̥γ̲̣̣ all have long term after effect on babies. Maybe U̶̲̥̅̊ should try the yoruba teethimg soap cos that's what I have been using for her since she was one month old and I have not had treat.

Hi there, congratulations on ur bundle of joy, it's normal for her not to lactate early, I gave birth exactly 4 weeks ago and I didn't lactate till after about 3 days and about her hard bosom, she has to expel the milk, have your Lil one suckle on her and if that won't work, she should use a breastfeeding pump. Its accumulated breast milk that needs to come out. All the best.
Re: NEW BORN BABIES! Are U A New Mum? Then Lets Discuss Babies Here!!!!! by itsmelex(f): 2:46pm On Jul 01, 2013
^^^ true! She should pump and preserv in fridge if baby isnt hungry and breast is full. She can also get breast pad ( washable or disposabl) and can use it when need arise so as not to gt her dress wet. For me, sleeping face-up also helped reduce to pressure on the breast and that reduced the wetness of bed.

Hey, breastfeeding also helps the uterus to contracts and return to normal and this can be painful during breastfeeding too.

Congratulations!!!

A nurse then told me that the baby will be admitted. ♠ don't want that at @ all so we came home, what can we use to cure d jaundice?

@alenkakent, I dnt thnk most people here are peds, maybe experienced mothers, and if they are, they cant see Ur baby to examine her and knw how she is. Please take her back to the Ped, she is too tender to be doing 'try your luck'. Some babies were admited from birth cause of more complicated issues so admiting about 1wk baby is not too early.
Did U say 'the nurse said'? Talk to the Doc and be clear on this. Its your child so ask all the questions posible. I thnk they have to expose her to a form of light and MONITOR HER CLOSELY. She'l be fine. pls do the right thing! Wish her speedy recovery!
Re: NEW BORN BABIES! Are U A New Mum? Then Lets Discuss Babies Here!!!!! by blank(f): 9:12am On Jul 02, 2013
@Alenkakent, take ur baby straight back to the hospital. Do not joke with jaundice in babies. If the level is less than a certain amount, u can watch her at home. If not, let them put her under the photolights ao that she receives the treatment she requires.
Google jaundice and see the long term implication if your "gamble" doesn't go the way you envision it. My son was under the lights for 5 days and got cured.
Re: NEW BORN BABIES! Are U A New Mum? Then Lets Discuss Babies Here!!!!! by blank(f): 1:36pm On Jul 02, 2013
Also, let your wife stop breastfeeding until the jaundice goes. It makes it go faster.

I don't think there's any need to stop breastfeeding the baby, my son also had jaundice and i breastfed him while he was undergoing treatment (phototherapy).

When my baby had jaundice around this time last year, i was asked to get unripe pawpaw soak it in water for 24hours and give him a teaspoon every 3hours and also expose him naked to early morning sun (btw 7-9am).

Pls and pls take your baby back to the hospital! It is better to be safe than sorry! My first child had jaundice and it was quite serious, she was admitted and placed under phototherapy for 4days! Have they done any blood work to check its severity? I have a friend whose child died as a result of jaundice, they also refused the baby to be admitted and the baby died a week after birth! I know our mothers will say put the child under the early morning sun,but there are chronic cases of jaundice that need intensive care! Its your first child, pls don't take chances! Wish you all the best!

Hi mothers,

Please I need advice on skin and hair care. My babyboy is a year old and fair in complexion, I use johnson baby soap the one in blue pack 2 bath him and ori to rub his body after bath. Its complexion has been ok all this while, but I recently feel he is a bit darker, I'm a full time mum and we hardly go out, so its not the sun. Pls advice on wat kind of soap 2 bath him with and should I still continue with ori. His hair is curly too and I'm looking 4 wat 2 use 2 maintain it. Thanks in advance.

Like i said, stopping breastfeeding while undergoing treatment makes it go faster especially if the child has really high levels of bilirubin.

Who is affected?
For reasons that are unclear breastfeeding a baby increases the risk of them developing jaundice which can often persist for a month or longer. It is estimated that 1 out of 10 breastfed babies will still have jaundice when they are one month old.

(Though in most cases the benefits of breastfeeding far outweigh any risks associated with jaundice).

Source: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/Jaundice-newborn/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Infant jaundice is a common condition, particularly in babies born before 38 weeks gestation (preterm babies) and breast-fed babies.

Ermmm you're African ryt? No need to worry about ur baby's skin as long as its healthy with no rashes. The tend to change with time. You might be surprised to see his complexion get lighter again. Its been a roller coaster of complexions with my kid. He was light at birth, turned dark by 3 months, lighter by 7 months darker by his first bday. Now he's 2 and lighter than ever. Just do ur best to take care of his skin. Their complexion can be funny at times.

Abeg o, jaundice isn't something to be taken lightly. Please take that baby to the hospital. A neighbour lost her 2wk old to this, they didn't diagnose it on time. Here it has been diagnosed. May God not give any of us the course to chew our finger in regret (ika abamo).

My 11 day old baby just vomitted yellowish fluid some mins after feeding(on breast),she was diagnosed to have jaundice on her 5th day and we've been using yellow bulb and bathing her with water(soaked wth pawpaw),she has a big stomach(looks lyk indigestion). Could the yellowish vomit be as a result of removin d excess bilirubin in her? What can be done abt the stomach? We have clinic visit by monday but ♠ can't just do nothin till then.

shocked Please don't wait till monday. Take her in right now if possible. I'm not sure yellow bulb can have d same effect as phototherapy lights. Please take her in before it gets further out of hand. May God see her through.
