Hello everyone, first I must say it’s been very informative going through this thread, so thanks for all the tips and inputs!..so I bought my first car two weeks ago, it’s a Nigerian used 2009 Honda Accord and from what I’ve seen on YouTube I believe it’s an ‘LX’ trim. My friend and mechanic did my oil change and servicing one week ago and I’ve been very uncomfortable with how my car now drives. First, it’s this crazy revving when I start it (around 3000 rpm) takes a while for it to return to just a little below 2000 and when I engage the gear it comes down between 1200-1500. Now my concerns are 1. The rpm thing wasn’t an issue before the servicing, and I believe a servicing should help a car and not bring up stuff like this, right? 2. The car GULPS fuel! Way too much, because even though this is the first car I’ve owned, I’ve driven one before and it wasn’t even half this bad. Why is this? Because according to him the ‘catalyst’ is still present in the car. (He helped me buy the car) 3. I noticed he used an oil that says ‘5W-30 synthetic’ during the servicing, but on the engine cover ‘5W-20’ is inscribed there and I figured that what we should have gone with. Could that be a problem? 4. As an inexperienced first time owner of a vehicle, what mistakes might I have made and how do I not make decisions that’ll frustrate me in the future? Thanks so much everyone and I look forward to your help and tips! God bless! |

Greyhouston: Good Morning. Firstly congratulations on your new ride. 2) There are factors that affect fuel consumption, also you shouldn't expect Toyota levels of fuel economy. You should be able to drive about 380 miles on a full tank. 3) Yes 5W20 is recommended viscosity of engine oil to be used the 5W30 your mechanic used would do (Gazzuz and other Honda experts could elaborate on this) 4) Engine Oil, Transmission Oil, Power Steering Oil... Use ONLY THE ORIGINAL ones. You can search this thread for the Oils you should use as they have been addressed. Welcome to the Honda Club 2 Likes |

Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by Structuralman: 8:44am On Jan 28, 2022 |
Greyhouston: Welcome to the Honda club. First of all try and get a car OBD2 scanner from Jumia. It's very cheap and can detect all the problems of your car that is causing the high fuel consumption. You will simply plug it to somewhere under the steering and it will bring out the error codes. |

Greyhouston: In addition to what has been said above. Kindly confirm if your car fan is connected to ignition and thermostat removed. Check the air filter to see if it is dirty Is it an I4 or V6 engine? |
Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by Conner44: 9:49am On Jan 28, 2022 |
Greyhouston: Your mechanic must have cleaned your throttle body while servicing the engine and i can guess a few things that he did wrong Maybe he mistakenly spoiled your iacv Maybe he misaligned your tps Maybe he didn’t connect on or more hoses well hence leaving your engine with a huge vacuum leak Maybe he has torn an intake hose which is allowing unmetered and excess air into the system Or maybe he didn’t connect a few sensor wires back properly One or more of the factors above will guarantee that your vehicle uses excessive fuel About your engine oil the 5w30 he used in servicing your engine is very much okay for it |

Hello Conner44, Luvinhunby and other great engineers. You deserve an honorary degrees in Automative engineering. Thank you for the great work. You are indeed a blessing to us and may God multiply your joy. Please I am in between opinions based on the jerking issues I had after using Jeezco palm oil for my Honda City 2006 which I earlier explained. Please how long can I still drive it before changing the transmission. I learnt transmission is 200k and it's not within my reach now. Also Original Honda CVT it around 6,500 per litre or so, can changing the oil help reduce the jerky and gear shifting issues, and the occasional blinking of the Drive D signal when engine is started? and for how long can I keep managing that before changing the transmission. I intend scanning the car perhaps there are other issues to be addressed too aside the gear and what are the chances of repairing the Body Value of the CVT gears pending when a new one will be procured. Sincerely I need experienced and sincere counsel. The deed has been done. Thank you all. I am grateful. Conner44: |
Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by Conner44: 1:30pm On Jan 29, 2022 |
otbaba: The truth is that from the first day that your mechanic poured the palm oil into your gearbox and you drove out of his workshop the damage to your gearbox started happening The more kilometers and months you drove the car with the wrong oil in it the more the damage occurred and things inside your gearbox got spoilt until it reached the stage where it began giving you bad shifting issues If you decide to change out the palm oil and pour in the recommended cvt fluid at this moment it will stop anymore damage from being done BUT it will not reverse the damage that has already been done inside the gearbox because of the wrong oil used so you’d be managing it with it’s current issues henceforth hoping it gets a bit better with time If you keep driving it with palm oil inside it will keep worsening the damage being done inside the gearbox until it spoils finally it might take days, months or maybe years but it MUST kpafuka sooner than later If you’re opportune to meet capably skilled technician he can attempt to rebuild your gearbox valve body but the probability of that fixing your gearbox back to how it was designed to work is 50% So those are your three available options except you purchase another gearbox Plus that scan you’re neglecting to do is very much needed at this moment |
Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by Collione: 7:32pm On Jan 29, 2022 |
otbaba: First and foremost no one is above mistakes. The purpose of this forum is for learning and Sharing ideas. That being said, stop driving your car to avoid more damages. Yes it's very possible that your transmission it's last legs but do the best you can at the moment. Scan the car and share the codes here. Amongst those codes it will reveal the sensors causing issues on your CVT transmission. Secondly drain that transmission fluid too . When you have replaced the bad transmission solenoid and also replaced the fluid, drive the car for a week. If the car doesn't display any further problems, drain the transmission fluid again and put in a new one. But if it still gives issues after all this, then manage it till you can afford another. Times are hard and I know how you feel. Scan the car and let's start from there |
Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by otbaba: 9:38pm On Jan 29, 2022 |
Thanks conner44. I was Apo in Abuja to scan the car today using LAUNCH X431 CRP 808 full system diagnostic OBD Scanner, but to my amazement, no fault code was detected. The guy tried checking a couple of times but nothing was detected. It read NO FAULT CODE. He later drove it on a ramp and saw that the Connector is vibrating and not smooth as it revolves. So he said we would need to get another one but while he called a gear specialist, he was told that it's likely that connector and the chains in the gear box that the car uses pulley of which the two parts are so hard to come by. So I had to leave his workshop. Thanks for the support everyone. It's appreciated. Conner44: |
Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by otbaba: 9:48pm On Jan 29, 2022 |
Thanks so much. I ran the test today and no fault code was detected. I was even asking the guy if it's gear sensor, he said both the first and second transmission solenoid are good and no fault code is detected on the car. I was curious to ask and ask again but no fault code detected using LAUNCH full diagnostic. He even said not all scan can work on the Honda City 2006. Sincerely, I was shocked.d Would still go for another scan perhaps using another machine though be said Launch works well with Honda City 2006 and the car doesn't work with most diagnostic out there. Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by Conner44: 11:39pm On Jan 29, 2022 |
otbaba: Is your check engine light on ? Is your D light still blinking? If your drive light was blinking when the technician performed the scan then there should be codes Except if the scan tool used wasn’t powerful enough to scan the whole systems of the car . You need a scan tool that’s capable of reading codes from both the engine and transmission too. I’d advise you to check someone else because Not all scanners are able to do so Since the technician noticed that the problem is from inside the gearbox then I’d advise you to change the fluid and see if there’d be any improvement before thinking of driving the car any further or buying another gearbox |

Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by otbaba: 2:51pm On Jan 31, 2022 |
Thank you so much Conner44, I sincerely appreciate your follow up and counsel. The Check engine yellow light was on then but the D light wasn't blinking. The blinking is occasionally. We even waited for long test driving and it didn't blink. The Technician said he would have appreciated the light come on now that he is with us but nothing of the 3 main issues except for the shuddering which happens at low speed or traffic hold up when you slow down and then press the gas pedal to accelerate. After plenty reading online, I suppose it's a peculiar issue with Honda CVT transmission for Honda Jazz, Fit and City older models. Using Honda recommended CVT fluids works in some cases not all to ameliorate the jerking but not 100% guarantee except if you have been changing the transmission oil after about 12-15k regularly according to users report. Some also mentioned changing the Clutch but it requires serious skill and to make matters good, most of our road side mechanics don't know about CVT transmission properly yet. Then one of the options was to add an anti-shuddering additive ( Extreme Power Oil sold in the US) to the CVT Fluid which was commonly done for users in Asia, Thailand, Malaysia and the likes, that brought 75% or more success rate according to the forum I check but the last option would be to change the transmission for another one and then sticking to recommended transmission oil. Those comments from the forum was however several years before now, maybe 8-10 years. I don't know if there are better options now. Kindly see the link below. https://rayazmuthalif./2008/07/08/how-to-avoid-cvt-gearbox-failures-in-honda-city-fit-jazz-a-sri-lankan-perspective/#comment-76 Once again I appreciate you and the other engineers in the house, you are blessing to us. I am already making efforts to get the recommended CVT shown below. I will update the House once that is done. Thank you all for your time and counsels. Conner44:

Re: Maintenance Tips For Honda Cars by Conner44: 3:45pm On Jan 31, 2022 |
are you still driving it with the jezco oil inside ? If i were you I’d just buy another gearbox and then use that original fluid in your picture to lubricate it If you know you can still manage it with the symptoms it’s giving you then change the fluid and see what happens After you scanned the car the technician should have told you the codes for why your car check engine light is on |

The frequency of usage has drastically reduced after my bringing it up here for fear of further damage. But it can be managed pending when we can get another gear replacement. In the meantime we would change the oil this week. Infact until you mentioned check engine light, my attention wasn't drawn to it. What could that have meant please? Conner44: |
