STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT GOODLUCK JONATHAN EID-EL-KABIR MESSAGE TO NIGERIANS FROM GOODLUCK EBELE JONATHAN, GCFR, PRESIDENT, COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA My Dear Compatriots, 1. 1. I extend warm greetings and felicitations to you all as we celebrate this year's Eid-el-Kabir festival. 1. 2. I also congratulate all Nigerians who successfully undertook the Hajj this year despite the unforeseen difficulties which developed over the issue of male companions for some of our female pilgrims. 2. 3. Although the problem was eventually resolved with the positive intervention of the Federal Government, I have ordered a thorough post mortem of the incident with a view to ensuring that our Hajj airlift operations are never disrupted by such problems in future and that no Nigerian pilgrim is ever subjected to such traumatic experience in the Holy Land again. 1. 4. Nigerians remain a people of great faith with the vast majority of our people professing belief in God either as Muslims or Christians. 1. 5. I believe therefore that we should all seize the opportunity of the Sallah season and the public holidays to reflect on how we can bring the ideals and virtues of our religious beliefs to bear on the positive resolution of the many challenges facing us as a nation. 1. 6. There can be no doubt that we will make faster progress towards the attainment of developmental objectives as a nation if we all resolve to do more to live up to the highest ideals of our religious beliefs including the fear of God, willingness to make personal sacrifices for the collective good, selfless service, respect for laws and constituted authorities, honesty, justice, equity, fairness, dutifulness, peace and harmonious co- existence with others. 1. 7. My administration will continue to give dedicated, committed, focused and purposeful leadership towards overcoming old and emerging challenges before the nation. 1. 8. While our doors remain open for constructive engagement and dialogue with all Nigerians, we shall continue to aggressively implement all measures deemed necessary for the restoration and maintenance of peace in all parts of the country. 1. 9. As we celebrate the Eid-El-Kabir, let us all remember the plight of the many thousands of our compatriots who have been displaced by the floods which recently devastated many communities across the nation and resolve to contribute whatever we can to ameliorate their suffering. 1. 10. I have already announced a relief package of close to N18 billion and constituted a national committee to raise more funds to help victims of the floods. 1. 11. In the true spirit of our major religions which enjoin us to be generous to the needy, I urge all Nigerians who can do so, to donate munificently to the national relief fund for affected persons and communities. 1. 12. We will monitor the disbursement and utilization of the funds released by the Federal Government and those raised by the National Committee very closely to ensure that they are judiciously and expeditiously expended for the benefit of the flood victims. 1. 13. May God bless and reward all who help the flood victims. 1. 14. I wish all Nigerians who undertook the Hajj a safe journey back home. 1. 15. Happy Sallah to all Nigerians. Governor of Central Bank, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, has decried the controversy over the oil price benchmark for the 2013 budget. Sanusi, who spoke to our correspondent in Jos, Plateau State, after delivering the second annual lecture on the 87th birthday of former Head of State, Gen Yakubu Gowon, at the National Institute for Policy and Strateic Studies, Kuru, near Jos, said having more money to spend was not the solution to the country’s woes, but how to improve the quality of capital expenditure. While government had pegged the oil price for the 2013 budget at $75 per barrel, members of the National Assembly wanted the government to jerk it up to $80 per barrel The CBN governor said the pegging of the oil price at $75 per barrel was to make the budget more realistic, especially with the fluctuations experienced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation. He said, “The revenue assumptions of the budget involve two variables and they are fundemental issues. It assumes price and assumes quantity. This budget already assumes 2.53 million barrels a day for 365 days in 2013. In my view, given the historical performance of NNPC, that output projections are already over optmistic. NNPC will never achieve that target. Historically, it had failed to bring up enough money for 2.3 million barrels per day or 2.2 mbd. “The underestimation does not just come from price, it comes from output. Now output is actually when you have more control. If you are going to have a budget that says NNPC is going to produce 2.35 mbd, do we have any process to determine that NNPC actually produces that quantity daily? Do we know how much NNPC produces? And do we know that everything that is produced in this country translates into revenue that gets back to government and which government hardly gets? Sanusi said the reason why government did not get all the derivable revenue was because of the leakages in the production process, through illegal piping of petroleum products and illegal refining He said, “We know for a fact that there are illegal refineries, illegal pipelines; we know where these refinries are, we know who own them. I mean, does anybody ever believe that security services in Nigeria do not know where the illegal refineries are located in the Niger Delta or who own them? Those are the leakages. ......... |

The European Union has won the Nobel Peace Prize , and given the dysfunctions in Europe right now, this is being greeted with a lot of jokes and skepticism. And frankly, given some of the past winners of the Nobel Peace Prize, the award is already looked at skeptically by some. But actually, this was a great call. What the EU has accomplished peace-wise has been pretty remarkable. Here are the first two paragraphs from the press release: The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2012 is to be awarded to the European Union (EU) . The union and its forerunners have for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe. www.businessinsider.com/eu-wins-nobel-peace-prize-2012-10 |
THE European Union has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for six decades of work in advancing peace in Europe. The committee said the EU had helped to transform Europe "from a continent of war to a continent of peace". The award comes as the EU faces the biggest crisis of its history, with recession and social unrest rocking many of its member states. The last organisation to be given the award outright was Medecins Sans Frontieres, which won in 1999. Announcing the award, Nobel committee president Thorbjoern Jagland acknowledged the EU's current financial problems and social unrest. But he said the committee wanted to concentrate on the body's work over six decades of advancing "peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights". |
Kaduna —A 40-year-old-man, Mohammed Abubakar of Hayin Rigasa, Thursday, brought his bride-to-be, Umulkair Ja’afar, before a Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, Kaduna, for alleged assault and intimidation. He told the court that arrangement for the wedding had gone far, when Umulkair told him that he must buy her a car before the ceremony could hold. He said: “We have started making arrangement of getting married, but she requested that I must buy a car for her before she will marry me. “I told her that I don’t have the money because I just bought my new car.” Abubakar further told the court that his inability to buy a car for Umulkair ended the wedding arrangement. He told the court: “After this development, the woman started sending insulting and intimidating text messages to me.” He said he had witnesses, who would testify on the issue. “I have shown them the messages she has been sending to me. I want to bring them before the court to testify,” he added. The Presiding Officer, Ibrahim Inuwa, adjourned the case to October 18, for the continuation of hearing. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/10/buy-me-a-car-or-forget-wedding-says-bride/ |

A senior lawmaker says oil-rich Iran can keep pumping crude oil to global markets for 150 years to come. “Iran is the only state with exceptional conditions due to its [oil] reserves and production. Assume that our production capacity is four million [barrels per day] while our proven reserves exceed five billion barrels. [Hence] we can claim that we are the only country capable of supplying oil to the world for 150 years to come,” Massoud Mirkazemi, chairman of Iran Majlis (parliament) Energy Committee, said on Tuesday. “Saudi Arabia’s proven oil reserves are more than Iran’s, with the difference that the Saudi government is producing over 10-11 million barrels. Russia’s [crude oil] reserves and production are also high. Therefore, these countries cannot live long in oil supply,” he said. "“Under current conditions, we must take the energy security into account. We believe that the United States is trying through its existing policy to strengthen its management on the world energy security,” said Mirkazemi added." “We predict that some oil consumer countries like Japan, [South] Korea and China would face US threats in the energy sector. However, if the US [manages to] dominate the world’s energy resources, it would easily put pressure on the European economy and threaten the economies of China, Korea, Japan and Russia,” he noted. Mirkazemi also stated that world oil production will reach its peak in 2020, while demand for black gold will keep rising. |

Dangote the government out of power |
AFRICA’s foremost industrialist and president of the Dangote conglomerate, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, weekend announced a donation of N430 million to victims of flood disaster and women empowerment in Kogi State. Kogi State hosts one of Dangote’s cement factories believed to be one of the largest in the world. The state also hosts Dangote Academy of Learning and Development where young local talents are trained to boost the manpower needs of the nation’s industries. At a ceremony attended by top government functionaries in the Kogi State capital Lokoja, Alhaji Aliko Dangote said the contribution given through his Dangote Foundation, was meant to complement effort of the government in providing relief materials to victims of flood disaster and resettling them as soon as possible. He said N50 million worth of foodstuff and relief materials would be donated, while N150 million would be given in cash. He also said N230 million would be distributed to women to boost economic activities in the state. In a similar donation, last year, the Dangote Foundation gave out N600 million for the economic empowerment of women in Kano State. In his speech titled: Lending a helping hand, Dangote said he was seriously touched by the pain and grief the victims were passing through, saying it had led to loss of lives, property and may lead to spread of diseases and epidemics. “Obviously, the government alone cannot shoulder this onerous responsibility of bringing relief to the victims. The private sector and public-spirited individuals should join hands with the government to assist the victims of this national disaster that has ravaged about 21 states of the federation,” he said. |
I hope this time around he would not address the chair only at the United Nation. another name for United nation is TALK SHOP FOR AFRICANS LEADER. BECAUSE MOST OF THE IDEAS ARE NOT WELCOME by the G5 |
